Description

F65 23 1932. c HAMSHER 1,846,723
DOUBLE PORCH WATER DIVIDER Filed Jung 2, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet l A ilomey F65. c HAMSHER DOUBLE PORCH WATER DIVIDER Filed June 2, 1930 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 In venior Alomey Patented Feb. 23, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE t CHARLES A. HAMSI-IER, OF NEW CUMBERLAND, PENNSYLVANIA DOUBLE PORCH WATERVDIVID'ER Application filed June 2, 1930. --Serial No. 458,946.
This invention relates to a device for use in conjunction with those types of dwellings device for rest on the porch between the floor.
of the porch and the lower rail of the dividing bannister to provide as it were a wall whereby the water on one porch will not seep or flow under the dividing bannister on to that portion of the porch constituting the porch of the other house.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is adjustable for use in conjunction with porches of varying width.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my im- 2 proved porch divider,
. Figure 2 is an end elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the device illustrating the application of the same to a porch.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 44: of Figure 3 and looking in the direction of the arrow.
With reference more in detail to the draw ings, it will be seen that my improved li id- 7 er comprises a pair of telescoping sections A, B respectively. The sections are substantially identical in construction, the sections being each formed from a single elongated blank of metal or other suitable material suitably bent and shaped to provide a pair of spaced parallel portions 55 connected at their upper ends, and at their lower ends bent outwardly to provide a pair of oppositely extending base or flange portions 88, said flange portions respectively at their outer longitudinal edges being bent downwardly to provide a depending extension or flange 9 which in turn is folded inwardly upon itself and then downwardly in the manner clearly sug ested in Figure 2 to provide a longitudiin ly extending somewhat vertically disposed channel 10 for receiving and retaining therein an elongated strip of rubber nel. a
As before intimated the sections 'A and B are; arranged in telescoping relation, and to vide a substantially semi-cylindrical pocket communicating with the channel 6 formedby so spacing the parts '5-5 of the section A.
The section B has its parallel portion 55 in abutting relation and at their upper connected ends the material is pressed somewhat in the manner as that with regard to section A, so as to provide a bead 13 slidable in the pocket 7, while the contacting portions 5-5 of the section B provide what may be termed a rib 12 slidable in the channel 6 of the section A, with the flanges 9 of the section B being received between the flanges 9 of the sections A, whereupon it will be seenthat the sections. are in sliding or telescopic connection whereby the length of the divider .may be adjusted at will. 7 In use, the divider has the rubber strips 11 of the sections resting on the floor of the porch for positioning the divider between the porch'floor F and the lower rail R of the dividing bannister D of the porch so that the rib 12 and channel 6 cooperate to provide as it were a wall rising from the porch to thelower rail of the dividing bannister, as
shown in Figures 3 and 4. Obviously then, when one isscrubbing the porch on one side oflthe bannister, the water will be prevented 11, extending for the full length of the chanfrom gaining access to the porch on the opposite side of the bannister, the rubber strips 11 resting on the floor of the porch and the sections as a whole forming a wall for so confining the water to that side of the porch which is being scrubbed.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
l. A porch divider comprising a pair of telescoping sections, one of which comprises a substantially channel shaped body port-ion having oppositely extending base flanges projecting at right angles to the walls or" the channel body at the lower edge of the body; and the other of said sections provided with a vertical elongated rib portion slidable in said channel body of the first mentioned section, and oppositely extending base flanges projecting at right angles from said rib for slidablc disposition beneath the base flanges of the first mentioned section, said sections having their base flanges respectively provided at their outer longitudinal edge with a downwardly turned longitudinal extension for supporting the said base flanges above the porch flooring.
2. A porch divider comprising a pair of telescoping sections, one of which comprises a substantially channel shaped body portion having oppositely extending base flanges projecting at right angles to the walls of the channel body at the lower edge of the body; and the other of said sections provided with a vertical elongated rib portion slid-able in said channel body of the first mentioned section, and oppositely extending base flanges projecting at right angles from said rib for slidable disposition beneath the base flanges of the first mentioned section, said sections having their base flanges respectively provided at their outer longitudinal edge with a downwardly turned longitudinal extension for supporting the said base flanges above the porch flooring, and said downwardly turned longitudinal extensions respectively provided with a longitudinal channel, and an elongated strip of rubber arranged in said longitudinal channel.
3. A porch divider formed from a single blank of metal fashioned to provide a vertical longitudinal body member, having a pair of oppositely extending flanges projecting from its lower edge, said flanges respectively at their outer longitudinal edge provided with a longitudinal inverted U-shaped channel, and a strip of flexible material arranged in said channel. i
4. In combination, a porch including a floor, a bannister for the porch having a CHARLES A. HAMsinsn.
