Description

AUNITED'. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON T. SATTEEWHITE, OE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN cAnTRlDona-Boxes.`
ySpecification forming part of Letters Patent hlm-184,668, dated November 21, 1876; application led April 27, 1876.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON T. SATTER- WHITE, of Nashville, in the county o f Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Cartridge-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying draw.- ing, forming part of this speciication, inwhich- Figure 1 is a section through line w a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a 'side view, partly in section.
My invention relates to a novel construction of cartridge-box, adapted for either sporting or military purposes. It consists of a circular case composed of two detachable parts, forming a central andan annular compartment. In the annular compartment fits and` revolves a frame divided into transverse chambers, in each of which is contained a cartridge, While the central compartment is intended for extra ammunition. The outer case is provided with an opening upon'its periphery, through which the cartridges drop, and it is also provided with a spring-detent, to determine the registration ot' the cartridge-chambers with .the opening in the outer case, and is slotted,
so as to permit the introduction of the finger to turn the annular frame.
In the drawing. A A represent the two detachable parts which forni the case, of which parts A constitutes the removable cover, th at is taken olf for the replenishing of the case. Said parts are made of sheet metal, and are constructed, A of a circular cap, with au inner wall, a', and an outer wall, a,'and A with a circular cap and a ange, c, that iits inside of Walla', and forms a flat circular box, with a central and an annular compartment. In the annular compartment is arranged a circular frame, B, which is divided by partitions d into transverse chambers, each of which is intended to receive a cartridge. The outer case is provided upon its periphery with an opening, e, which is ot' the same size as the cartridgechambers, and, when the latter register therewith, allows the cartridge to fall out. C is a lever, pivotd to the periphery of the outside 'either side ofthe person.
of the annular frame, so that Whenever a cartridge-chamber registers with the opening e in the outer case a partition, d, enters the notchand holds the annular framek stationary. The lever Gis made with opposite inclinations upon each side of the notch, so as to permit the revolution ot the annular chamber in either direction, thereby adapting it to be used upon The outer case is also slotted at h, so as to admit the finger to the cartridgechambers, for the purpose of turning the frame and preventing the falling out of the cartridge.
The cartridge-case, as thus described, is provided with a strap or band, suitably attached thereto by means of loops, and the case swung to the person by means of the strap, which ispassed over'the shoulders.
Now, whenever a cartridge is wanted, the
thumb-piece of the lever C is pressed so as to removethe notch from the partition, and l I am aware of the fact that it is not new to construct a cartridge case .with revolving chambers, and do not claim such, broadly'.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The circular case A A', having a 'central and annular compartment, and an opening upon its periphery, in combination with the annular revolving frame B, having transverse partitions, forming cartridge-chambers, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The lever 0,'pivoted upon the periphery and having an opening, e, in` combination ofthe case, and adapted to move in a plane with the annular chambered frame B, the parallel with the side of the same, and havspring g, and the lever C, substantially as ing a notch, j, with oppositely-inclined faces, and for the purpose set forth.
in combination with the spring g' an'd the A SOLOMON T. SATTERWHITE. annular frame B, having partitions d, sub- Witnesses: stantiallyas and for the purpose described, J No. R. LOVE,A
3. The detachable case A A', slotted at h, M. MGTYEIRE.
