Description

R. BENTLEY.
BATTEN ROOF OR WALL.
WITJV'ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE. l
EANDALL BENTLEY, 0E oWEN soUND, oNTAEIo, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATTEN RQOFS OR WALLS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,576, dated November 21, 1876; application le May 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDALL BENTLEY, of the town of Owen Sound, in the county of Gray, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction ot' Roofs and Walls for Buildings; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention relates to a mode of forming roofs and walls from troughs and battens sztwed from solid timber, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view ot' a portion of a-roof' or wall, and Fig. 2 an end View of the timber from Which the parts forming the same are sawed.
In the gures, A represents a block of timber of any suitable length. From this block, and lengthwise of it, are sawed the two troughs B and U and the battens D. E represents a scantling or joist, upon which the root' is placed. These scantlings are cut with joining V-shaped openings uponl an angle with the larger troughs B B. The troughs B B are laid upon these joists in their openings, with their vertices downward and their upper edges adjoining. The troughs C C are then placed over the joints of troughs B B, with their vertices upward, for'the purpose of breaking the joints. The battens D D are then placed, as seen, between the troughs C U and secured, their vertices being downward, so as to contine the lower edges ot' the troughs C C, to prevent their bending or warping. When these troughs B and Gand the battens D are secured in position upon-thejoist as constructed,
a rootl or wall is formed which is impervious
