Description

Patented Nov. 21.1876.
! IHIUHI Hi I ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EBEN ooonwin, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,5 l8, dated November 21, 1876; application filed September 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EBEN GOODWIN, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have Fig. 2 is a throat plate of the cutting machine a series of small tubes, that are connected with a reservoir for containing a sweetening, lubricating, or flavoring liquid, the pipe connecting theubes with the reservoir being provided with a valve tbrcontrolling the flow of liquid.
The object of the invention ;is to lubricate the knife and obviate gumming the knife and throat of the machine, and to apply a sweetening or flavoring liquid to the tobacco at the most advantageous time and place.
Referring to the drawing, A is the frame of a tobacco-machine; B, the revolving cutter, and O the throat of the machine containing tobacco being cut. D is a recessed plate or panel placed above the throat-plate of the machine; and a a, &c., are small tubes running through the plate D, and opening at the front surface of the same. E is a reservoir for containing the sweetening or flavoring liquid, connected with the tubes a by a pipe, b, and a distributing pipe, 0. The pipe b is provided with a stop-valve, d, for controlling the flow of liquid through the tubes at.
As the liquid runs down from the reservoir through the, several tubes at the front of the machine, it is delivered in such quantities to the cheese of tobacco in the throat of the machine as will moisten and flavor the tobacco as it is cut, and at the same time lubricate or moisten the knife sufficiently to prevent gumming.
The advantages gained by my invention are, that the flavoring liquid is applied in the required quantity, and is thoroughly and evenly distributed. At the same time the knife of the machine is sufficiently moistened to prevent it from becoming coated with gum, as is usually the case.
I do not limit myself to any special arrangement of reservoir or pipes, nor to any particular position for the outlet of the tubes, as the liquid may be applied in various ways to the tobacco contained in the throat of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the throat of a tobacco-machine, of a reservoir and a series of pipes lea-ding therefrom to the throat of the machine, for distributing a liquid to the cheese of tobacco, the said pipes being provided with a valve for controlling the flow of liquid, substantially as shown and described.
EBEN GOODWIN.
