V At the forward end of the skids 12, studs This invention relates to an attachment for mining machines and aims to provide an exceedingly simple and efficient device whereby the machine may be raised or lowered in order that the cutting may be controlled so as to be easier and quicker, by enabling eXact adjustment or positioning of the cutter.
It is also aimed to provide a novel means which will enable the device to slide on the props which it may strike during operation or maneuvering.
It is also aimed to provide a construction which will shed dust and grit so as not to cause undue wear or clogging of the parts.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates a conventional mining machine such as is used in the mining of coal according to the long wall method. The cutting mechanism is shown at 11.
In accordance with the invention, a ground engaging skid 12 is provided at each side of the machine 10 and adapted for vertical adjustment in order to accurately position the cutting mechanism 11. Such skids have hangers 13 fastened thereto and in turn pivoted on bolts 14 or the like, carried by rackets 15 which are bolted or fastened as at 16 to the sides of the machine 10.

Said rods 19 are slidably guided by brackets 20 bolted as at 21 to the sides of the machine 10. At the upper ends, rods 19 are provided with screw threads 22, which are Said nuts23 2 1 bolted at 25 to the machine 10 and also bolted together as at 26. Each nut 23 is held against vertical or axial movement by reason of an annular flange 27 thereon ac commodated in a recess 28 of one of the bearings 24:. At the top, nuts 23 have one or more holes 29 therethrough adapted for engagement by rods or the equivalent, to produce the leverage necessary to turn the nuts and thereby cause the jack members 19 to raise or lower and accordingly vary the position of skids 12.
An inclined opening 30 is provided in one of the bearings 24: so that the dust and grit which is bound to collect in a mine and sift through the bearings about a nut, will be shed through the opening 30, thus avoiding clogging of the bearing surfaces and undue wear thereof.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention '1. A mining machine having ground engaging skids, means pivoting said skids at 1 one end, and means to adjust said skids on their pivots to positions above the base of the machine.
2. A mining machine having ground engaging skids on the sides thereof, means pivoting said skids at one end, means to adjust said skids on their pivots to positions above the base of the machine, comprising rods pivotally connected tiereto, and means operable to raise and lower the rods.
3. A miningmachine having ground engaging skids on the sides thereof, means pivoting said skids at oneend, means to adjust said skids on their pivots to positions above the base of the machine, comprising rods pivotally connected thereto, means operable to raise and lower the rods comprising a nut in threaded engagement with each rod,
and bearing means coacting with the nut to journal the same and prevent axial movement thereof.
