This invention relates to latching devices i for sliding windows, particularly vehicle windows, and the princ1pal ob ect of the 1nvention is to provide a latching device for a sliding closure comprising spring ,loade'd means operable against the action of the spring to release the cam wedging device.
The invention will ibe more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which the only figure is an elevation partly in section of a latching device for slidable windows constructed according to the invention. i
In the preferred embodiment of the pres ent invention a slidable window of the compensated balanced type is guided at one side in a channel shaped metallic element 23, movable as hereinafter described in a second and fixed channel shaped member 2% extending vertically up the side of the window framework. To the outer side of the inember 23 is fixed a wedge 25, or a number of Wedges whlch taper towards its or their upper edge or edges, each wedge bemg mounted adjacent a freely rotatable roller 26 extending across the outer channel member 24. Each wedge has a pin 27 extending laterally therefrom which engages a slot 28 in one side of the channel member 24. An operating device for moving the inner channel member 23 and the wedge 25 into and out of look ing position is mounted in a bracket 29 fixed relatively to the outer channel member 24.
In the form illustrated, this operating device comprises a bent lever 30, pivotally mounted at 31, and having a lower branch 32 pivoted to a link 33 having a resilient action by means of a spring 34Vwith a lever 35 pivotally mounted in an adjustable bearing 36, and connected by a link 37 to a bracket 38 fixed to the inner channel member 23. The
lever 35 is normally urged to a position in which the cam 25 is operative to lock the window against movement by a spring 39 diswhich passes in the position shown, the window is locked against movement, upward movement of the cam 25 to wedge against the roller-26 causing, owing to the inclinedslot 28, a slight upward movement of the inner channel member 28, which thus effects a clamping action against the edge of the window, and prevents it from movingin either direction.
To release the window for adjustment, the end'lever 3O isrocked in a clockwise direction about its pivot 31, this movement also rocking the lever 85, so that its left-hand end becomes depressed, moving the inner channel member 23 and the cam 25 downwardly. This frees the window edge from the fricional engagement by the inner channel member 23, and allows adjustment to any position, after which restoration of the lever 30 to the position shown will again lock the Window in position.
In the accompanying drawing a fragment of the slidable window is shown at A, but the means for balancing the weight of the window is not illustrated as this may comprise any known spring or weight operated coun ter-balance and forms no part of the present invention. It will be readily understood that the window is guided at its edge remote from the channel member 23 bymeans of a suitably fixed guide channel forming part of the window frame (not shown).
