This invention relates generally to the class of brakes, and has particular reference to a brake which is especially designed for use in connection with and forming part of a device for regulating and controlling the speed of rotation of a revolving door, such as that disclosed in copending application, Serial 488,97 6, filed October 15, 1930.
The invention broadly aims to provide a brake which is designed in such a manneras to admit of its installation on the carriage of a revolving door for cooperation with the shaft which serves asa means for suspending the door from the carriage for rotation.
The invention further comprehends coop-i era-tive means for actuating the brake, which means are designed in'such a manner as not to interfere with the shifting of the car riage and door to a folded out-of-the-way position, but which means are brought into cooperative relation when the carriage and door are in a normal position whereby the brake may be rendered effective.
Other objects of the invention reside in the simplicity of construction of the brake mechanism, the economy with which it may he produced and incorporated in the door structure and the high degree of efiiciency derived therefrom.
With the above recited and other objects in View, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the same.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional plan view taken approximately on the line indi cated at 11 in Figure 2, illustrating the brake mechanism installed on a revolving door structure. 7

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates generally the usual carriage from which the revolving door B is suspended for rotation on a depending shaft O which 18 1ournaled in the carriage bearing D. The carriage is provided with the usual rollers E, which are movable laterally on the overhead tracks F which extend transversely of the opening in which the door is mounted to revolve, whereby the leaves of the door may be folded and the door bodily shifted to an out-of-the-way position at one side of the doorway.
Inorder to providemeans for retarding the speed of rotation of the door, use is made of a brake mechanism in conjunction with and forming apart of a speed controlling or regulating device, and the brake mechanism in the present instance includes a drum 5 which is in:
the nature of an annular flange depending from a disk 6 which is cast or otherwise formed as apart of a hearing hub 7 which is suitably secured, such as by a key 8, to the upper end of the shaft O for rotation therewith. The carriage A in the present instance 1 supports a horizontally disposed platform 9 which is centrally apertured as at 10 to ac commodate the bearing D and hub 7 and which directly underlies the drum 5. The brake band 11, in the nature of a split resilient annular element, is disposed within the drum 5, between the disk 6 and platform 9, and the ends 12 defining the split portion of the band are enlarged to define confronting bearing surfaces between which a cam 13 is disposed, the cam being provided with a stem 14 which extends downwardly through a bearing opening 15 in the platform and into a step bearing 16 in the carriage A. Between the bearings 15 and 16, the exposed portion of the stem 14 has secured thereto an arm 17 which when swung in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, turns the cam 13 to effect relative separation of the ends 12 of the band 11 against its normal inherent tendency to contract, whereby to circumferentially er;- pand the band for impinging its outer periphery against the inner, periphery of the drum 5. Obviously, the expansion of the aand setsup a frictional engagement with the inner surface of the drum 5 to retard the speed of rotation of the shaft O and the revolving door B. The regulatingor governing mechanism (not shown, but contained in the lions ing G alongside of the tracks F) operates an actuating lever 18, which is fulcrumed as at 19 to throw the lever extremity 20 in the direction of the arrow in Figure l, to swing the brake applying arm 17. It will be observed that the lever 18 is disposed in a position to contact with and swing the arm 17 when the door and carriage are in the normal position, but said lever is in a non-interfering relation to the movement of the carriage when the same is to be shifted laterally to dispose the door in its out-of-the-way foldedposition. 7
What is claimedis:
1. The combination with a revolving door structure including laterallyshiftable door carriage and a door shaft journaled thereon for rotation, a brake mechanism including a brake drum secured to the door shaft, a normally inactive brake element adapted for movement" into frictional engagement with the drum, and cooperative means for rendering the brake element effective including an arm fulcrumed on-the-carriage and an actuator member mounted on a stationary support and disposed in juxtaposition to the" arm when the door'carr-iage is in'normal'position.
2. The combination with arevolying door structure including 'a'laterally shift-able door carriageahd a door shaft journaled thereon for rotation and adevice for controlling the speed of rotation of said door including'a brake'mechanism comprising a brake drum secured to the doorshaft, a'- split resilient brake band' normally contracted circumferentially'to anon brakin'g positionand a-cam for expanding the brake band into contact with the braking surface of the drum.
3. 6. The combination witha revolvingdoor structure including a-laterally shiftable door carriage and a door shaft journaledthereon for rotation, a brake drumsecuredto the door shaft for rotation therewith, a brake element carried by the carriage and normally disposed outof contact with the braking surface of the drum, interengageable means'for eifecting-movementvof the brake element into braking contact with the drum, said means respectively carried by the door carriage and a stationary support and disposed'in juxtaposition whencthe door carriage is in itsnormal position.
