Oneform of the invention is embodied in a condenser which comprises a casing or housing preferably provided with a removable closure member at` one end thereof. Seated in the housing is a unit comprising aplu'rality of tubular members which communicate with a chamber in one end of the housing `and with a chamber formed in the unit. lMeans is provided for'connecting the chamber in the housing witha supply of Huid to be condensed, and means'is provided for connecting the chamber formed in the unit with any suitable receptacle or system. The construction is such that a cooling Huid may be circulatedthrough the housing to cool 'and condense the fluid passing through the members. n

10 designates generally a casing orhousing which is formed of any suitable material and is preferably substantially rectangular in cross section. The housing 10 is preferably provided with a closuremember or cap 11, which is removably secured to the housing by bolts 14:, or the equivalents for the purpose. It will be noted that the cap 11 is provided with an aperture 15 into which a'pipe '16 is screwwthreaded.
Disposed within the housing' 1() is a unit 17 comprising a plurality of tubular members 18 formed of relatively thin metal and" soldered or otherwise secured to the tubular members 18 are a plurality of fins 2() which are also preferably formed from relative-` y thin metal. rThe fins 20 facilitate the exchange of heat from a fluid passing through the tubular members 18 to a fluid circulating around the members 18. The upper ends of the members 18 are preferably soldered or otherwise secured to a plate 22 which has its marginal edges disposed between the housing 10 and its cap 11, suitable packing members 23 being provided at this point, if it is so desired. It will be noted that the bolts 14- pass through suitable apertures formed in the plate 22 and that the tubular members` 16 communicate with a chamber 24rformed withinthe cap 11. The lower ends of the tubular members 18 arepreferably soldered or otherwise secured to a plate 25 which forms one wall of a tank 26 communicating with the members 16, the tank 26 being preferably formed with atubular extension 27 which may be screw-threaded at its outer end, as at 28, for a purpose whichV will presentlyappear. The tubular extension 27 eX- tends through a stufling box28 formedupon the housing 10. This construction compensates for unequal expansion and contraction of the unit 17 and the housing `1() when the device is in operation, the lower wall of the Sri tank 26 being spaced from thelower wall of Y the housing 10 so that the unit 17 may readily expand when a heated fluid is passed therethrough. Projecting into the housing 10 are intake and discharge pipes 30 and 31, respectively, which may be connected to any suitable apparatus (not shown) to supply a cooling fluid to the interior of the housing 10. As best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the housing 10 is preferably provided with a plurality of baffles 32 which insure that the cooling fluid will be brought in contact with all portions of the tubular members 18 and the fins 20. I also prefer to provide reinforcing side members or strips 33 secured to the plate 22, the tank 26 and the hns 20.
The operation of myimproved condenser is substantially as follows'z'The device is preferably connected by the pipe 16 to the apparatus (not shown) which supplies the fluid to be condensed and the threaded end of the tubular extension 27 is preferably connected by pipes or the equivalent to a 'receptacle (not shown) into which'the condensed fluid is to be delivered. The cooling iiuid is preferably delivered to theho'ii'sing 10 .through the pipe 30 and withdrawn therefrom by the pipe 31. Obviously, there will be an exchange of heat'between the fluid being condensed and the cooling fluid and the fluid passing through the tubular members 18 will be condensed.
An advantage of my improved construction is the easewith which the unit 17 may be removed from the housingl 10, it being only necessary to remove the cap 11 and then lift the unit from the housing. This facilitates repairs upon the unit 17 and permits the interior of the housing to be cleaned at frequent intervals.
Havingthus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departingfrom the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a member providing a housing, one end of said member being closed except for an aperture provided therein and the opposite end being open, baffles arranged upon opposite sides of the interior of said member and being` extended toward each other with the edges' thereof arranged relatively to each other to provide a space between them, a unit composed of tubes connected to a plate adapted to be removably arranged insaid space between said baffles, a pipe extending from one end of said tubes adapted to be inserted through the aperture in the closed end of said member, said plate forming a closure for the open end of said member, an apertured cap for connection with said member, and said member having a fluid inlet and outlet.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a member providing a housing, said member being closed at one end and having an aperture provided in said end, a fluid inlet and outlet for said member, opposed walls of said member having a plurality of baffles located in relatively different planes upon opposite sides of the interior of said member and providing a passage between them, and a tubular unit adapted to be introduced through the open end of said member and located in the space between said baffles, said unit having va pipe extending from' one end thereof adapted to be inserted in the opening in the closed end of said member, and an apertured cap adapted to be removably securedto said member and providing means for holding said tubular unit with relation to said member providing said housing.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a member providing a housing having a closed apertured end and being open at the opposite end, a cap having an opening and providing a closure for said open end, a plate located between said cap and open end ofsaid member, said plate providing a wall between said cap and op'en end of the housing, tubes extending from' said plate, a tank connected with the opposite ends of said tubes, a pipe extending from said tank through the aperture in said end of the housing, baffle plates arranged in relatively different planes and extending in opposite directions interiorly of the housing, fins provided upon said tubesV and extending from an edge of one baiiie to an edge of another, said baffles and fins providing means for directing circulation of fluid through'saidhousing and said housing'having a fiuid inlet and outlet.
4. In a device of the character described including` a housing for a unit composed of a plurality of tubes adapted to be introduced to and removed from said housing, said housing being closed at one end except for an aperture provided therein and being open at the opposite end, said housing having oppositely extending interiorly arranged ribs having edges thereof arranged relatively to each other to provide a space between them for the reception of said unit, and said housing having` a fluid inlet and outlet.
5. In a device of the kind described, the combination of an open ended housing, the opposite end of said housing being closed and said closed Vend having an aperture, a unit composed of tubes, a plate secured to one end of said tubes and forming a closure for said open end of the housing, a tank secured to the opposite ends of said tubes, a pipe extending from said tank through the aperture in said closed end of said housing, side plates respectively arranged at and connecting said first mentioned plate and tank, said side plates,
` tank and end plate forming a. frame surrounding said tubes, a cap removably secured to the open end of the housing and having means for engaging said first mentioned plate, said plate providing means for supporting said unit composed of said plate, tank, tubes and side plates Within said housing, said cap having an opening and said housing having inlet and outlet openings.
