Description

Feb. 9, 1932. R N TI 1,844,599
WINDOW SCREEN Filed April 15, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet l pwm Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED: 'A TES PATENT OFFICE LUIG-I RENZETTI, OF MEDFORD; MASSACHUSETTS wnvnow scnnmv Application filed April 13,
An important object of the invention is to provide a window screen of the character described embodying a novel construction and arrangement of parts for securely mounting the same in position in the window frame character which will be simple in construotion, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in use, attractive in appearance, which may be manufactured at low cost and which may be expeditiously installed for use.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation looking at the outer side of a window screen in accordance with this invention showing the screen partly raised and connected to the window sash. I
Figure 2 is a view in vertical cross'section through the device.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the device.
Figure 1 is a view in vertical cross section through the device with the screen housing tal cross section showing one of the guides.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary detail view in 1931. Serial N0. 529,849.
perspective showing an end portion of one of the guides.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 des-' ignates a pair of polygonalcasings which are adapted for disposition in the lower corners of the window frame on the sill 2, the window frame being designated generally by the referencenumeral 3. The casings 1 include integral inner or opposed walls 4 and removable outer walls 5 which are inserted in the outer portions of the casings 1, said walls 5 having right angularly disposed marginal I flanges thereon as best seen in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The inner oropposed walls 4 of the casings 1 are provided, adjacent the bottoms of said casings with slots for the reception of the upwardly offset end portions 7 of an anchoring bar 8 which is formed of wide, flat material secured in any suitable manner to the sill 2 of the window frame. As best seen in Figure 4 of the drawings, screws 9 extend through the bottoms of the casings 1 for rigidly securing said casings to the end portions 7 of the anchoring bar 8. It will thus be seen that the casings 1 are rigidly secured in position in the window frame.
The inner and outer walls 4 and 5 of the casings 1 are provided with aligned openings in which the longitudinally slotted end portions of a shaft 10 are journaled, said shaft 10, of course, extending between the casings. Springs 11 encircle the end portions of the shaft 10 in the casings 1 and have oneend con nected thereto by insertion in the slots of said shaft and theirother ends anchored to the casings, as at 12, Figure 5.
Substantially C-shaped channels or grooves 13 are pressed into the opposed walls 4; of the casings 1 and said channels or grooves are concentric with the shaftlO. The grooves or channels 13 are for the reception of the ends of a screen housing 1 1 which is also of substantially C-shaped cross section thereby providing a longitudinally extending opening 15 on its inner side. A guide roller 16 is journaled between the casings 1 adjacent the opening 15 in the screen housing 1 1, said guide roller being provided with reduced end portions constituting trunnions which are journaled in openings provided therefor in the inner wall of the casings.
A screen 17 is secured to and windable on the shaft 10 in the housing 1d, said screen being operable through the opening 15 and trained under the guide roller 16 and having secured on its free end a coupling bar 18 provided with the inverted keyhole slot 19 for the reception of the headed pins 20 which are anchored in the lower rail 21 of the window sash. It will thus be seen that the screen is detachably connected to the window sash for movement therewith.
Substantially U-shaped guides 22 are secured on the parting strip 23 of the window frame and xtend upwardly from a point adjacent the end portionsof the screen housing 1d, said guides being vertically aligned with the guide roller 16, as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. As will be obvious, the end portions of the coupling bar 18 and the longitudinal marginal portions of the screen 17 travel in the guides 22 when the screen is raised or lowered with the window.
The springs 11 are normally under tension at all times. When the window sash is raised in a manner to unwind the screen 17 from the shaft 10, said shaft 10 is rotated in a direction to wind the springs 11 and thus, when the window sash is lowered, the shaft 10 will be rotated in an opposite direction in a manner to again wind the screen thereon. It will be apparent that the screen may be expeditiously detached from the window sash by simply raising the bar 18 relative to said sash to permit the keyhole slots 19 to be disengaged from the headed pins 20.
It is believed that the many advantages of a window screen constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is A window screen comprising a pair of polygonal casings for disposition on a window sill in abutting engagement with the vertical sides of a window frame, the opposed walls of the casings having slots therein acent the bottoms of said casings, a flat metallic bar extending between the casings on the window sill, said bar having upwardly offset end portions extending through the slots into the casings, means for rigidly securing the end portions of the bar to the bottom walls of the casings, said casings having their inner saeeoo
