GLASS FORMING MACHINE Filed 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 to this .finish mold my Patented Feb. 9, 1932 tJNir-En STATES rA'rEN'r orricn EARL SCIENEEGLUTH, 0F AMBERG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR 1'0 AMBERGER FLASCHENHUT- TEN A. G., 91 AMBERG, GERMANY GIASS-FOBMING momma Application filed February 24, 1931, Serial No. 517,392, and in Germany December 1, .1930.
My invention relates to glass-forming machines, andmore particularly to the blank To the end of forming such depressions l I provide a pair of oppositely arranged punches which are mounted to be displaced with respect to the blank, and means con trolled by the opening and closing of the blank mold for advancing and-retracting the punches.
A blank mold will be shown and described which is adapted to be used on an automatic glass-forming machine of the ONeill type but I am not limited to the adaptation of my invention to this particular machine. In a machine of the type referredto, as described in U. S. Patent 1,315,983, the blank molds are mounted in vertical position on a horizontal carrier which is rotatable abouta column. The blank molds themselves areof two-part construction, with their sections hinged to one another and to the horizontal carrier. Cooperating with the lower end of each blank mold is a sectionalneck or finish mold, and
novel means is applied.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention I provide a sectional punch support which is adapted to be placed on the finish mold and in this support I mount slidable punches .in diametrally opposite positions. The punches are controlled by camming faces on the blank-mold sections, and connected to levers which are mounted to rockin the support under the action ofpull-back springs.
When theblank mold is closedthe levers are moved in'wardlywhile their springs are compressed and advance the punches "so that they will. penetrate into the cavity for the neck of the bottle. When the blank mold is opened the punches are retracted by the springs.
In the drawings afiixed to this specification and forming part thereof a blank-mold section and the two punches with their accessories embodying my invention are illus- In the drawings Fig. 1 is an elevation of the blank-mold section, one section or the finish mold and one section of the plunger support,
Fig. 2 is" an elevation showing one of the support sections, with its plunger bearing in section along its axis, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the'line lll lll in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, a is a section' of the blank mold, the carr1er, the other section, and the means for hinging the sections together and to the carrier, having been omitted. b is one of the finish-mold sections, and d is one of the support sections,the mating sections 6 and 01, respectively, being shown in Fig. 3. g is the cavity for the reception of the bottle neck in the finish mold. c is a circular recess in the front faces of the'vsupport sections 01, d for. the reception of the usual plunger and ring. These parts have not been shown asthey form no part of the present invention. f and f are semi-circular grooves in the jointing faces of the sections 6 and d, and 1' and t are corresponding semicircular grooves in the mating sections 6 and d, respectively. It will be understood that bores forming axial extensions of the grooves t, f and r, f,respectively.' Mounted to slide in the guide ways constltuted by the bores and grooves are plungers i2. ands, with pointed ends is and 4), respectively, the ends being shaped in conformity.
with the desired shape of the depressions in;
the bottle neck. The punches have tapped bores at their ends for the reception of threaded pins Zwith heads 0. Mounted to rock about pins 10 and w in recesses e' and e of the respective sections 03 and d are punch-operating levers n and :20. Each lever at its free end is equipped with a boss n which is slotted at m for the reception of one of the threaded .punches'mounted to slide in said guideways, pins Z, the bosses M engaging washers or and means controlled by the opening and flanges on the heads .0, as best seen in Fig. 2, closing of said blank mold for advancing and and projecting'from the recesses e and e. retracting said punches.
Furthermore each lever is equipped with a 3. In a sectional blank mold a sectional spring g in a suitable cavity which is abutted finish mold adapted to be secured in fiX-e'i on the corresponding support section and position. with respect to said blank molt, tends to retract the "corresponding punch k sectional support adapted to be placed on or s. a said finish mold, the sections of said finish The lower ends of the sections of the blank mold and said support together making up mold are equipped with camming faces for guideways in diametrallyopposite positions the operation of the levers n and w, as shown with respect to the axis of said blank mold, at a for the section a. The cam faces are a bearing block projecting from the jointing recessed at y for the reception of the bosses face of each support section into a recess of n of the respective levers n, and w. the mating sectlon and having a bore in con- In operation the section of the finish mold tinuation of the corresponding guideways in and thesupport are assembled on the plunger said finish mold and said support, punches and. its ring, not shown, in the position mounted to slide in said guideways and in the illustrated in Fig. 2, and the blank. mold is bores of said bearing'blocks, and means con- 0 closed about them. During the closing of the trolled by the opening and closingof said blank mold the camming faces u engage the blank mold for advancing and retracting said bosses n of the levers n and w and advance punches. . finish-mold sections 12. A quota of glass is KARL SCHNEEGLUTH. 2 now placed into the blank mold, separated from the punty rod and finished, as described in the said patent, until the blank is ready to be transferred to a blow. mold. When the blank mold is opened the camming faces u I 30 release the bosses n, and the springs 95.
through the medium of the levers .n and m, retract the punches h and s from the cavities they have formed in the neck of the bottle.
I wish it to be understood that I do not 35 desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described forobvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. I
In the claims afiixed to this specification 40 no selection otany particular modification I a of the invention is intended to the exclusion of other modifications thereof and the right to subsequently make claim to any modification not covered by these claims is expressly 45 reserved. i I claim 1. In a sectional blank mold a support adapted to be secured in a fixed position with respect to the sections of said-mold, a pair of 50 punches arranged in diametrally opposite positions with respect to the axis of saidblank mold and mounted to slide on said-support, anoperating lever connected to each punch, means on the sections of said mold for mov- 55 mg said levers inwardly, and a spring connected to each lever for moving said levers outwardly with respect to said blank mold.
2. In a sectional blank mold a sectional finish mold adaptedtobesecured in a fixed q 60 position with respect to said blank mold, a
sectional support adapted to be placed on said finish mold, the sections of said finish mold and said support together making up guide- I ways in diametrally opposite positions with x respect to the axis of said blank mold,
