A llomey Patented Feb. 9, 1932 PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST LAWBENZ, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN COMBINATION TABLE Application filed May 21,
This invention relates to combination tables, and an object of the invention 18 to provide a table that by a very simple appli cation, may be used for holding a flag or Q Christmas tree while at the same tlme providing for supporting a lamp thereon for use over the table.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a table of the character referred to that is strong, compact and durable, very simple in its method of assembly, thoroughly reliable for its intended purpose, very simple in the change from one form to the other, and comparatively inexpensive to manufac- .15.ture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claim heret appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective'view of the table being utilized as a table,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof when being utilized as a support for a Christmas tree Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the table,
Fig. 4 is a detailed vertical section taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a detailed fragmentary vertical section taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a detailed fragmentary section showing an application of the tree socket through the top of the table.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, four outset curved legs 7 are secured at their uppe ends to the lower portion of a vertical sleeve 8 by means 50 of the rivets 9. About the intermediate por- 1930. Serial No. 454,351.
tion of the sleeve 8 is supported a round tray 10 which is supported or may be used for holding sewin on other articles.
A vertical s aft 11 has the lower end 12 reduced and extending into the upper portion of the sleeve. In the lower end of the reduced portion 12 is an axially threaded opening 13 which receives the-threaded shank 14, of a thumb screw 15 that is mounted in the closed bottom wall 16 of the sleeve 8.
Thus it will be seen that the shaft 11 may be locked in the sleeve 8 by means of the thumb screw 15. The shaft 11 is tubular at its upper end and open to provide a pocket 17 to receive a round depending lug 18 which projects from the centerof the round supporting plate 19 that supports the round table top 20 to be presently described.
Projecting above the upper face of the r plate 19 at the center thereof is a round boss 21 in the upper face of which there is a counter-sunk threaded opening 22. The center of the table top 20 is formed with a round opening 23 that conformably fits about the upstanding sides of the lug 21 and the top of the table terminates flush with the upper face of the lug.
When the table top is not being used, as a flag or Christmas tree holder, the screw 24 is seated flush in the threaded opening 22, the top of the opening being beveled to receive' the beveled head of the screw.
It is clearly shown in Fig. 1, that the application of the table top is being used for a table.
When it is desired to use the table top for a tree or flag pole support, a socket 24 is disposed over the fiat face of the larger lug 21. The lower wall of the socket is formed with an opening to receive the head of the screw 24 whereby the socket is anchored to the top of the table and receives a Christmas tree 25 which is supported above the top of the table.
The table top 20 is anchored to the round plate 19 by means of screws or other hold fast devices 26. Projecting laterally from the vertical stand 11 is a conductor pipe 27, the inner end of which is coupled to the upper tubular portion 17 of said stand. A11
electric light socket 28 is supported on the stand and provides a current for the electric wires extended through the conductor pipe 27.
At the outer end, the conductor pipe 27 is formed with a vertical extension 28 on the upper end of which is a socket 29 that receives the low-end of the rod 30, in rotatable relation. The rod 30 is hollow to accommodate the electric light wires that continue through the conductor pipe, and the rod 30.
The rod 30 is rotatable in the socket 29 and at the upper end thereof is curved as at 31 so as to dispose the lamp shade 32 on the inner end of the curved portion over the table when swung to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the table is used for a tree support as in Fig. 2, the rod 30 is swung in the socket 29 to the 'vertical position as designated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. An electric light bulb is secured torthe inner end of the curved portion 31 of the rod 30 so that illumination may be provided for the top of the table.
Thus it will be seen that the combination table may have the staff 11 removed therefrom and use the lower portion as shown in Fig. 3 as a stand. In event it is desired to utilize the entire table the reduced end 12 of the stand 11 is inserted in the upper end of the sleeve 8 and the thumb screw 15 will couple the staff 11 to that portion shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In this position, the device is particularly adapted to use as a table so that very easy manipulation of the rotatable rod 30 will cause the lamp shade 32 to be disposed over the top of the table. Now when it is desired to use the table as a support for the Christmas tree 25, the screw 22 is removed from the lug 23 and the socket 24 disposed over the top face of the lugs whereby the insertion of the screw through the bottom wall of the socket will anchor the socket to the top of the table to receive the Christmas tree.
It will be understood that in event the socket is applied the lamp shade 32 may be moved over to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purpose of exemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the I statement of the invention and the above description.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure, or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the claim, orthe requirements of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A device of the class described comprising a tubular standard closed at its lower end, and
having its upper end open, the closed lower end having a threaded hole therein, legs connected to the lower end of the standard, an
upright having a reduced lower end fitting in the standard and having a threaded recess in' top having a cen-
