Description
w. LEWIS. HORSESHOE.
Patented Nov.14 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LEWIS, 01+ NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.
Specification forming art 0f Letters Patent N0. 184,394, dadied November 14, 1876; applica.tion filed April 5, 1876.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEWIS, of New York eity, in the county and Staate 0f New York, have invented an Iinproved Mode of Securing an Elastic Frog-Pad in the Heel of a Horseshoe, and that-the following is a fu1l, elea-r, und GX2LOD description of the same, reference being had 130 he accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved shov. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly in horizontal section.
That others may fully understand my im provement, I will more particularly describe it;.
An elastic frog=pad, A, has heretofore been inserted in the heel of a horseshoe, B, as a remedy 0r preventative f0r various diseases 0x injuries so which horses, and especially trotters, are liab'le, bat there Das hitherto been a p1autical difficulty in 'retainiug said pad securely in place, und. a1; the same time render it removable, without also removingthe sh0e. These difficulties are all obviated by my improvement, which eonsists in a, stay-bar, O,
iuserted through the ends of the heel 0f the shoe B, and also through the elastic pad A neurits rear eud, whereb'y it becomes impossible f0r said pad to become displaced under any cireumstances in which the horse is likely to be plaeed, or under any action of bis feetp.
'lhe stay-bar 0 I prefer t0 make flat, as
shown, and it is kept in place by the pressure ot' a small set-screw, D, inser ted through one end of theheel, asshown, andpressing against; the edge of said bar or into a notch in the edge thereof, so that; while said screw does its duty, the displacement 0f said bar 01 bhga frogpad Will be impossible, anti at the same time the bar and pad may be easily removed independent 0f the fasteningsof the shoe.
Having deseribed. my improvement, what 1 claim isl. A horseshoe, B, and glastic frog-pad A, eombined with a stay-bar, O, inserted laterally t-hr0ugh the heel ol': said shoe and edgewise through theelastie pad A, for the purpose sei: forth.
2. A hors6shoe, B, elastie frog-pad A, and stay-bar O, inserted laterally through tl1e heel of th'e said shoe and through 'the frog pad, combined with a sec-screw, D, inserted. in the end of the heel, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM LEWIS.
