GEORGE w. KELLEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, onto.
' IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL TRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,386, dated November 14, 1876; application filed June 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEO. W. KELLEY, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Animal-Traps, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an animal-trap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to-enable others skilled in the art to which my invention ap'pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view with part of the top removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A represents the box, which is, by a longitudinal partition, B, divided into two compartments, A and A The compartment A is provided with a grating, a, on top, and at each end it has a sliding door, 0, moving at the top on a rod, 1), and at the bottom in a guide, d, as shown. The doors 0 U are, by rods 0 e, connected with cranks DD upon the ends of a shaft, E, which passes longitudinally through the compartment A At one end of the shaft E is a coil-spring, h, for operating the shaft and opening and closing the doors 0 G. From the shaft E project two arms, i i, in opposite directions, which 4 arms are to engage with, or be caught upon, shoulders on the pivoted ends of two levers, G G, which are pivoted to earsin the top of the compartment A and projectinto the compartment A The end of the lever G is held by a latch, k, projecting from a rocking shaft, m, in the compartment A from which shaft depends the bait-hook n. The end of the lever G is held by a latch, H, made in the form of an elbow-lever and pivoted in the box, one arm of said latch being connected to an arm, 10, projecting from the upper hinged endof a grating, I. This grating is hinged in an opening made in the partition B, to form communication between the two compartments of the trap, the grating extending into the compartment A and resting on the bottom thereof. Directly opposite this grating,in the side of the compartment A is a grating, J, and in said side is also a hinged door, K, held closed by a pin, .9, as
shown. The two levers G G being held by their respective latches, thespring h is wound up by turning the shaft E by means of one of its cranks, and when the arm i on said shaft is allowed to rest against the shoulder as on the lever G, the doors 0 C are open.- When an animal now enters the compartment A and attempts to take the bait on the hook n, the shaft m rocks so as to withdraw the latch kfrom the lever G, and said lever at once' yields to the pressure of the arm t, caused by the spring h, and the shaft E then makes one half of a revolution, closing the doors 0 G,
and the arm 13. strikes the shoulder :10 on the lever G and stops the shaft. The animal then, seeing it is trapped, will go toward the lightthat is, pass into the compartment A by raising the hinged grating'I, which immediately falls again, and the animal cannot raise it from that side to pass out. The raising of the grating I withdraws the latch H from the end of the lever G, and allows the shaft E to make another one-half revolution, opening the doors 0 G, and thus setting the trap again, the arm ibein'g then caught by the lever G to hold the trap open. The trapped animals are removed by opening the doors K.
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an animal-trap, the combination of the compartment A sliding doors 0 0, connecting-rods e a, shaft E, with cranks D D and arm 41, the lever G, and rocking shaft m, with latch GEO. W. KELLEY.
