The invention primarily relates to ribbon vibrating mechanism for typewriters and to adjusting means therefor, and has among its various objects the provision of a construction whereby the ribbon carrier of the vibrator may be moved to present different portions of the ribbon to the platen as for instance when a multicolor d ribbon is employed.
It is a further feature of the invention to provide a construction whereby when the platen is shifted from the upper to the lower case, caps or figures, the vibrator mechanism will travel therewith. v It is a further feature to provide adevice which allows the platen to be adjusted to its proper location so that proper co-operation will be insured between the type bars and the platen when the platen is shifted in the manner above described.
It is another prime object of the invention to provide a ribbon vibrator mechanism with a means which may be moved to present different portions thereof to a part of the vibrator mechanism to thereby cause the vibrator mechanism to be moved different distances depending upon the position in which said means is set. It is a further object of the invention to employ a member for accomplishing the last mentioned advantage which member has portions which. are off-set with relation to each other, the off-set portions being designed to be respectively brought into co-operative relation to a certain other part of the vibrator structure to thereby change the point of application of the force employed for moving the vibrator and consequently vary the distance which the vibrator is moved upon each actuation of the key levers.
It is an additionalobject of the invention to provide a means for moving said member just referred to, and to construct said means so that said member may be moved relatively thereto upon each operation of a key lever.
The invention has in View these and other objects all of which will be more readily understood when read in conjunction with the specification and drawings, the latter of which illustrate one manner of accomplishing the invention, it being obvious however, that changes and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the appended claims forming a part hereof.

In the structure illustrated in the drawings, certain portions thereof such as the platen, ribbon vibrator, escapement and means foractuating the vibrator and escapement are mounted so that they may be apso plied and removed from the bed of the machine as a unit.
A key lever 10, a rack bar 11, and a type bar 12, are employed, the key lever being pivoted at 13, and connected to the rack bar through the medium of an arm 14, one end of which is connected for operation along a slot 15, provided in the rack bar. The rack bar is pivoted at 16, and is provided with teeth 17, which in turn mesh with the segmental toothed portion 18, of the key lever which is pivoted at 19.
The rack bar 11, is further provided with an elongated surface 20, which when the rack bar is depressed engages with the universal bar 21, which is arranged below and in the path of movement of all of the key levers, the actuation of the universal bar causes the ribbon to be wound from one'ribbon spool to another through the medium of the pawl and ratchet 21a, and in addition provides a means for actuating the ribbon vibrator. The universal bar 22, is connected with an esgapement mechanism which permits the platen to move lengthwise upon each actuation of the key levers such as 10. This universal bar, extends as most clearly shown in Fig. 5, substantially across the width of the machine and in the path of the part 20, of the rack bar. These universal bars 21, and 22, are pivoted at 23, the escapement connected for actuation with the universal bar 22, forms the subject matter of another application, Ser. No. 25,491, filed April 24, 1925, and therefore, will not be explained in detail herein.
The vibrator mechanism generally designated 24, is mounted upon a stationary sup port 25, and includes a ribbon carrier or vibrator 26, most clearly shown in Fig. 6, which in the present instance includes perforated ears 2727, which slide along the upwardly and rearwardly extending element 28, of the support 25. This portion 28, is provided with a slot 29, for the reception of an element 30, which element 30, is connected by means of a link 31, to an arm 32, the latter being pivotally connected to a shaft 33, carried by a U-shaped member 34, in which said shaft 33, is mounted. The element 34, is pivotally fixed to an arm 35, which is part of the frame generally designated 25. As before stated, a means is provided which upon the actuation of the universal bar 21, will cause the ribbon vibrating mechanism and carrier to be actuated to arran e the ribbon carrier so as to present the rib on to the type provided upon the type bars 12. The vibrator mechanism is further constructed so that the ribbon carrier may be set to present a different colored portion of the ribbon to the type of the type bars even though the machine is set for upper, lower case, caps 01' fig ures.
The means whereby the ribbon carrier is actuated to present the ribbon to the type upon each actuation of a key lever and whereby it is also shifted or set to present one or the other of the colored portions of the ribbon for type impression is most clearly shown in Fig. 7. This means includes upwardly extended standards or supports 36-36 which extend upwardly from a plate or bar 37 located beneath the parallel arms of the universal bar 21 and adapted to be actuated by said arms. The support 36, has secured thereto a U-shaped member 37a, which latter has parallel arms 38 and 39 extending upwardly therefrom and in which arms is mounted a color shift member 40. This member 40 provides a connection between the laterally extending arm 41, of the vibrator lever 32, of the vibrator mechanism and the U-shaped member 370, and thus depression of the universal bar will actuate the lever 32, and the vibrator 26. The arm 41, of the lever is provided with an elongated slot 42, forthe reception of certain portions of the member 40, which is longitudinally movable to allow said portions thereof to be moved into and out of co-operative relation with the slot 42, to thereby vary the connection between said member 40 and the arm 41, of the vibrator lever 32, and consequently the effect of the movement of the universal bar 21. The longitudinal movement of the member 40, is accomplished through the medium of an arm*43, which is pivoted at 44, to some stationar part of the machine, and has the elongate upstanding part 45, for engaging the member .40, the member 40 being constructed at the point of engagement between it and the part 45, to allow movement of the parts 40, and 45, durin adjustment of the carriage or movement t e lower case, caps and figures. The lever 43, is provided with the arm 46, the latter of whlch co-operates with the arm 47, carried by the shaft.48 when the latter is rocked by means of the color shift mechanism, generally designated 48a, the arm 42 and the member 40 will be moved longitudinally relatively to the arm 41 and the arms 38 and 39 11of the U-shaped element 37a. The member 40, is as before stated, longitudinally movable and is provided with the parts 49, and 50, and 51, the part-s 49, and 50, being offset with relation to each other, and the opposite ends of the member 40, being of a length sufiicient to allow for the longitudinal movement of said member 40, without causing its disconnection from the arms 38, and 39.
If now the rod 48 is turned, the arm 47 will move member 46 thereby oscillating lever 43 about 44 which, in turn, moves the member 40 through the elongated slot 42 to place either of the ofl"-set portions 49 or 50 in engagement with the arm 41. It is evident thatwhen the oif-set 49, is located in the slot 42, as shown in Fig. 7, the movement imparted to the lever 32, upon the actuation of the universal bar 21, will be relatively greater than the movement thereof when the off-set portion 50, of the member 40, is located in the slot 42, which will vary the movement of the lever 32, and consequently the throw of the ribbon carrier of the vibrator.
It will be noted that the width of the part 51 is sufficiently great to retain the member 40 in associated relation with theU-shaped reof to upper and v connected at 52, to the support 36,

By reference to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, it will be noted that the platen 53, and the platen carriagegenerally desig'nated54, are pivoted: to thereby.
at 55, to theframe of the machine, allow the platen 53, and carriage 54, to be moved through a shift key lever (not shown) to dispose the platen so that it will be in proper position to co-operate with upper or lower case, caps or figures, provided upon the type bars, and also to permit of adjustment to set the platen so that it will properly co-operate with the characters provided upon said type bars. To this end the carriage 54, has an extension 56, which through the medium of set screws 57 and 58 permits the platen, carriage, and ribbon vibrator to be adjusted, and in addition permits the platen and carriage to be moved-upon .the actuation of the shift key lever abovereferredto.
A meansis provided whereby the ribbon vibrator, platen, and carriage are moved in unison with-each other upon adjustment and also upon operation by the shift key lever.

and includes an arm59, which is pivoted at 60 to a lug 61 which is apart of the platen carriage, the arm 59, being normally held in contact with a stop 62, of the platen carriage, by meansof a'spring 63, the spring permitting the arm '59, to move with the platen and carriage until the extension 66, of'the'arrn 65', engages the stationary stop 65a, after which i the carriage and platen are permitted to move upon the pivot '55, with respect to the arms 59 and 65 against the 'a'c jtionof thelspring 63. The arms 59 and 65,]are connected t0- 'gethe'r bymea'njs ofa link'67, which will thus transmit the movement of the platen and the' carriage when moved. upon the pivot. 55, to
the associated mechanism including themember 40, arm 32,U-shape d'mem ber 37a, and associated elements to be moved in unison to a certain point of'the adjustment'of the platen and carriage, the spring 63, allowing relative movement or adj ustment of the parts operation, including. a leverage ber movable with said vlbratable lever to acafter a predetermined position of the platen and carriage has been reached.
From the foregoing explanation of the construction and operation of the device, it is evident that upon movement or adjustment of the member 40, either one or the other of the off-set portions 49 or 50, is moved into the elongated slot 42, provided in the arm 41,
- causing-the point of application of the force applied'to the lever 32, to be applied adjacent and relatively remote from the pivot of said lever, which will consequently cause a dili'erential movement to be imparted to the lever upon a given movement of the arm 36, and U-shaped member 37a.
It is further evident that a means is provided whereby the platen has an accurate movement imparted to it upon its being shifted from upper to lower case, characters, numerals and figures, and also that the ribbon vibrator is movable therewith upon adjustment and shifting of the platen.
Having thus fully described one embodiment of the invention what I claim and dcsire to cover by Letters Patent is 1. In a typewriter. a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted, means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single, fixed axis and means for effecting movement of said member about said single, fixed axis in accordance with the movement of the platen and carriage about the pivotal axis thereof, and means for varying the throw of said vibrator mechanism for multicolor operation.
2. In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted, means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single. fixed axis and means forv effecting movement of saidmember about said single, fixed axis in accordance with the movement ofthe of said vibrator mechanism for multicolor change memcommodate the case-shifting movement of said platen andcarriage.

In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor. mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which'said lever is pivotally mounted and means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single,
fixed axis in accordance with the movement of the platen and carriage about the pivotal axis thereof, a link connecting said member and said platen carriage for imparting such pivotal movement to said member, a member adapted for movement upon the operation of a key lever to operate said ribbon vibrator mechanism, and means for varying the throw of said vibratable lever for multicolor operation.
4. In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodily caseshifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted and means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single, fixed axis in accordance with the movement of the platen'and carriage about the" pivotal the throw of said vibratable lever for multicolor operation, said last-mentioned member being mounted for shifting movement to accommodate the case-shifting movement of said platen and carriage without affecting the operation of said ribbon vibrator mechanism.
In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted and means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single, fixed axis in accordance with the movement of the platen and carriage about the pivotal axis thereof, a member adapted for movement upon operation of a key lever, and connecting means between said last-mentioned member and said vibratable lever, comprising a leverage- *arying element for multi-color operation mounted for shifting movement to accommodate the case-shifting movement of said platen and carriage without affecting the operation of said ribbon vibrator mechanism.
6. In a typewriter. a platen and carriage therefor mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted and means for supporting said member for pivotal movement about a single, fixed axis in accordance with the movement of the platen and carriage about the pivotal axis thereof. a member adapted for movement upon operation of a key lever, and connecting means between said last-mentioned member and said vibratable lever, comprising a longitudinally adjustable leveragevarying element for multi-color operation mounted for shifting movement to accommodate the case-shifting movement of said platen and carriage without affecting the operation of said ribbon vibrator mechanism, said last-mentioned melrber comprising a mounting for said leverage-varying element accommodating such longitudinal adjustment thereof.
7. In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift adjustment, a ribbon vibrator mechanism also pivotally mounted for case shift equalization and comprising a slotted arm, a member adapted for movement upon operation of a key lever, and connecting means between said vibrator and said member comprising a longitudinally shiftable rod mounted in said member and passing in operative relation through said slotted arm.
8. In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift adjustment, a ribbon vibrator mechanism also pivotally mounted for case shift equalization and comprising a slotted arm, a melnber adapted for movement upon operation of a key lever, and connecting means between saidvibrator and said member comprising a longitudinally shiftable rod mounted in said member and passing in operative relation through said slotted arm, said rod being provided with off-set portions engaging said arm at varying distances from the pivotal mounting of the arm to vary the throw of said vibrator for multicolor operation.

In a typewriter, 5 a platen pivotally mounted for case shift movement, a ribbon vibrator mechanism also pivotally mounted for case shift equalization and, comprising a bell crank, one arm of which moves the ribbon and the other arm of which is slotted,"a member adapted for movement upon opera tion of a key lever, and connecting means between said slotted arm and said member comprising a longitudinally shiftable rod having off-set portions engageable with said arm at different points therealong tocause varying throws of said vibrator upon color shift.
10. In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift movement, a ribbon vibrator mechanism comprising a bell crank, one arm of which moves the ribbon and the vother arm of which is slotted, a member adapted for movement upon operation of a key lever, and connecting means between said slotted arm and said member comprising a longitudinally shiftable rodhaving offset portions engageable with said arm at different points therealong to cause varying pivotally mounted at the junction of its arms to be movable about its pivot to vibrate the ribbon, means for pivotally moving said pivot point as the platen shifts, one arm of said bell crank being slotted, a rod passing through said slotted arm and longitudinally shiftable to engage said arm at different distances from the pivotal mounting of said bell crank, and means for moving sald rod transversely to vibrate said ribbon vibrator.

In a typewriter, a platen pivotally 1 mounted for case shift movement, a ribbon vibrator mechanism comprising a bell crank pivotally mounted at the junction of its arms to be movable about said mounting to vibrate the ribbon, means for pivotally moving said mounting as the pla en shifts, one arm of said bell crank being slotted, a rod passing through said slotted arm and longitudinally shiftable to engage said arm at different distances from the pivotal mounting of said bell crank, and means for moving said rod transversely to vibrate said ribbon vibrator, comprising a member in which said rod is mounted and which is moved upon the operation of a key lever. p

In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift movement, a ribbon vibrator mechanism comprising a bell crank pivotally mounted at the junction of its arms to be movable about said mounting to vibrate the ribbon means for pivotally moving said mounting as the platen shifts, one arm of said bell crank being slotted, a rod passing through said slotted arm and longitudinally shiftable to engage said arm at different distances from the pivotal mounting of said bell crank, and means for moving said rod transversely to vibrate said ribbon vibrator, comprising a member in which said rod is mounted and a universal bar adapted to move said last-named member upon operation of a key lever.

In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift movement, a ribbon vibrator mechanism comprising a bell crank pivotally mounted at the junction of its arms to be movable about said mounting to vibrate the ribbon, means foi moving said mounting as the platen shifts, one arm of said bell crank being slotted, a rod passing through said slotted arm and longitudinally shiftable to engage said arm at different distances from the pivotal mounting of said bell crank, and means for moving said rod transversely to vibrate said ribbon vibrator, comprising a member in which said rod is mounted, a support for said member, and a universal bar engaging said support and moving it upon op eration of a key lever.

In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodily case-shifting movement about a single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratabie lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted, means for pivotally supporting said member on a fixed axis, and means for moving said member to compensate for the case-shifting movement of the platen and carriage.

In a typewriter. a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for bodil v case-shifting movement about a. single pivotal axis, ribbon vibrator mechanism including a vibratable lever, a member on which said lever is pivotally mounted, means for pivotally supporting said member on a fixed axis, and means for moving said member to compensate for the case-shifting movement of the platen and carriage, comprising a link extending between said platen carriage and said member and adapted to move the latter about its axis of pivotal support.
17. In a typewriter, a platen pivotally mounted for case shift adjustment, a ribbon vibrator supporting member pivotally mounted on a fixed part of said typewriter, a ribbon vibrator lever pivotally mounted on said supporting member, means for moving said supporting member to compensate for the case shift movement of the platen, means adapted to be moved by the operation of a key lever embodying a cradle-like member, and connecting means between said latter member and said ribbon vibrator lever.

In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for case-shifting movement, a supporting member pivotally mounted on a fixed part of the machine and connected to said platen carriage to follow the case-shifting movements thereof, ribbon vibrating mechanism including a member vibratably mounted on said supporting memher, a universal bar, and connecting means between said universal bar and said vibratably mounted member comprising a member pivotally connected to said universal bar on an axis substantially in alignment with the axis of pivotal support of said supporting member,
whereby the operative relation between said 7 universal bar and said ribbon vibrating mechanism is undisturbed by the case-shifting movements of said platen and carriage.

In a typewriter, a platen and a carriage therefor mounted for case-shifting movement, a supporting member pivotally mounted on a fixed part of the machine and connected to said platen carriage to follow the case-shifting movements thereof, ribbon vibrating mechanism including a member vibratably mounted on said supporting member, a universal bar, and connecting means between said universal bar and said vibratably mounted member comprising a member pivotally connected to said universal bar on an axis substantially in alignment with the axis of pivotal support of said supporting member, whereby the operative relation between said universal barand said ribbon vibrating mechanism is undisturbed by the caseshifting movements of said platen and carriage, said connecting means being adjustable to vary the throw of said vibratably mounted member for multicolor operation of the ribbon vibrating mechanism.
20. In a typewriter, a vibratable ribbon carrier, vibrating mechanism therefor, a supporting member for said vibrating mechanism, pivotal supporting means for said supporting member, and a single member formed to constitute both a guide for said ribbon carrier in the vibrating movements thereof and a mounting for said pivotal supporting means.
