The present invention pertains to a novel cushion spring construction of the type used in building automobile .seats, mattresses, chair seats and the like.
A certain class of such spring structures consists of a series of axially elongated coil springs supported on a suitable base inspaced relation to each other and'covered with upholstery material. Due to the spacing among these springs, there remain substantialareas in which the upholstery material is unsupported. For the same reason the load placed uponthe structure is likewise unsupported at definite areas, and the result is undue strain, distortion and wear of the upholstery material at these unsupported areas.
The present invention aims to avoid such unsupported areas by the provision of'a flat spring structure or mat placed upon the elongated coil springs. The top structure con sists, briefly, of a number of flat coil springs clipped together and also to the top" coils of the elongated springs and to the frame of the structure. The flat springs are manifestly positioned in such a manner as to overlie and partly cover the spaces occurring between and within the elongated springs.

Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The construction shown'in Figures 1, 2 and 3 include a wire base frame 1 and a similar upper frame 2 between which are disposed a series of double conical spiral springs 3.
These springs have their lower ends clipped I PATENT OFFICET as at 4 to the base frame 1 wherever contiguous thereto and are further secured by clips 5 to tiebarsfi laid across the base frame. The upper ends of the springs 3 are similarly clipped as at 7 tothe upper frame2 wherever contiguous thereto. v a
It will beseen that the springs 3 are spaced considerably from each other, and itis one of the objects of the; invention to provide load sustaining members'in these spaces as already indicated. Accordingly I form atop structure consisting of fiat springs 8 clipped together as at 9'in. a common plane and laid upon thetops of the springs The axes of the flatsprings are disposed; substantially in the, centers of the spaces defined by the springs 3, and the flat springs are of such size as to extend substantially over the tops of the elongated springs as clearly shown'in Figure 1. The outer ends 10 of the flat springs are brought into tangency with the sides of the frame Zand are secured thereto by clips 11. i

In the modification shown in Figure 4 the top structure has a different relationto the centers of the spaces between the elongated coil springs 3. In this case a mat is formed of flat coil springs 13 clipped together at It and adapted to lie upon the springs 3. In the embodiment shown there are five fiat springs in. the length occupied by four elongated springs, sothat the fiat springs not only cover the spaces between the elongated springs but also provide a bearing surface in the open spaces formed by the uppermost coils of the elongated springs. The fiat springs are clipped as at 15 to the upper frame 2 where contiguous thereto and also to the uppermost coils of the springs 3, as at .16, when ever substantially tangential thereto.
It Willnow be apparent that the upper the uppermost convolutions of the enlongated springs.
Although specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, it will be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In aspring construction comprising axially elongated coil springs having their tops in a common plane, the combination of a.
separate top structure covering a plurality of said spring tops and consisting or flat coil springs directly connected to each other, said fiat coil springs overlapping and resting upon the tops of said elongated springs.

laid upon and overlapping said tops and clipped thereto. 7
4. In a spring construction comprising axially elongated'coil springs having their tops in a common plane, the combination of a top structure consisting of flat coil springs laid upon said tops and clipped thereto and to each other.
5. In a spring construction comprising axially elongated coil springs having their tops in a common plane, certain of said tops be ing spaced from each other, the combinatiofi of a top structure consisting of flat coil springs clipped together and laid upon said elongated springs and having their axes substantially in the centers of the spaces defined by said elongated springs, each flat sprin extending over the elongated springs around its center.
7. In a spring construction comprising axially elongated coil springs having their tops in a common plane, certain of said tops being spaced from each other, the combination of a top structure consisting of flat coil springs clipped together and upon said elongated springs and having their axes substantially in the centers of the spaces defined by said elongated springs, each flat spring extending over the elongated springs around its center.
