A The present invention relates to foot rests and particularly adjustable rests which are made up of a base and a slide member, movable with respect to each other, to and from the inoperative position.
Foot rests'of this kindare used to support the feet of customers in such `places as shoe shiningvparlors, shoe Vsales rooms,fand other places where it is desired to dispose the feet of the customer in a suitable position for action thereon by the proprietor( It is well known that adjustable foot rests of this general character must be constructed with a minimum number-of parts and in a manner permitting them to vbe assembled without the use of complicated -interengaging mechanism.` Also, thek foot rest should be operable quickly and should be especially strongand rugged.
One of the primary objects of thisinvention is to provide a foot rest of the above mentioned character which is provided with a base and a slide which will not accidentally come apart when the foot rest is in use. To
carry out this point of invention it is desirable to interlock the two parts making up the foot rest while they are entirely removed from the operative relation.
The specific points of invention embodied i in this foot rest will be set forth during the course of the following-specification, .referring to the accompanying drawing,wherein: Figure l is a side elevation of a foot rest embodying this invention.

and 5 to present a longitudinal groove y10 along each side thereof, which terminates at one' end of base 8 as shown in Fig. 3. At this end each groove l0 extends upwardly at an angle to form a passage l2. A shoulder is formed at the juncture kof passage l2and groove l0 for a purpose herein more fully set forth. The opposite end of'each groove 10 for a considerable distance inwardly, is in clined downwardly to form an inclined portion 16 which endsat the stop 18.
vSlide 20 is coextensive with base 8 and is formed to present a depending wall' 22 along each side thereof which drops down on either side oflbase 8 and across grooves 10 as illus` trated in Fig. 4. The distance between walls 22 is greater than the width of base 8 to allow free relative sliding movement when slide 20 is drawn longitudinally along base 8 to move the platform 24 to or from the closed position shown in Fig. 8. To hold the foot rest rigid when pressure is exerted on platform 24 in the direction ofthe arrow shown in Fig. l, and yet to allow easy relative movement between the two, a pair-'of rollers28 is carriedby slide 20,` adjacent one end thereof. As illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, one roller is carried'by each depending wall 22 by a trunnion 40, formed integrallytherewith and extending inwardly toward the base 8 into the adjacent groove l0. A

This-actionis de! sired when the device is being adjusted for a person with long legs.
One of the very important features of this invention is a possibility of assembling the foot rest in a manner which will preclude ac-` cidental displacement of any part thereof during its use. When stop 26 has limited the movement of slide 20 in one direction, rollers 29 lie against shoulder 14:. To entirely remove slide 20 from the base 8 it is absolutely necessary to lift the same to a position shown in the dotted lines of Fig. 3. After the stop 26 has been moved out of its operative position the rollers 28 may be then disengaged from the groove l0 by moving the entire slide 20 rearwardly and upwardly to cause the rollers to move along the angled passage l2. A part of the top wall of slide 2O above rollers 28 is cut away as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 to allow such assembling and disassembling action as has just been set down.
It will be obvious from the Jforegoing that the relative positions assumed by the parts of this foot rest will never be such that accidental displacement can occur. This novel feature overcomes the heretofore well known objection that at certain points of'adjustment the slide 2O would fly out of position to cause injury or otherwise discomfort both customer and proprietor of a shop using the device.
- n Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: Y
1. A foot rest comprising in combination, a co-,extensive base and slide, a longitudinal groove formed along each side of the base,
a depending slide wall on each side respectively of the base, a stop at one end of the slide and a roller carried by each depending wall respectively at the other end of said slide disposed to travel in the adjoining groove as the slide is moved longitudinally of the base, said stop functioning to -limit the said movement before the rollers reach .the end of said grooves.

5. In a foot rest, a base, a slide thereon, a longitudinal groove in each side of said base, an angled passage joining each groove at one end thereof, an inclined portion formed by the groove, a stop formed by the base at one end of said inclined portion, to limit movement in one direction, rollers carried at one end of the slide to travel in the grooves as the slide is moved along the base and a stop formed bythe slide to limit the movement in the opposite direction.
6. In a base for foot rests, a roller receiving groove in each side thereof having an incined portion adjacent its one end and an angled passage joining each groove respectivelyat the other end whereby rollers may be introduced into said grooves.
