This invention relates to a metal joist construction. y
The invention comprehends the provision of a metal joist having upper and lower chord members, tension members extending diagonally between these chord members and' compression bars connecting the chord members and retaining the tension members in assembled relation therewith, in which the special construction of the tension members and the chord members provides for the use of reduced ends on the compression 'bars adapted to extend through registering openings in the tension and chord members so that the swaging of the reduced ends of the compression bars will rigidly assemble these parts together.
In the drawings:
Fig; 1 shows the joist member in perspective.
Fig. 2 is a sectional vview taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. f
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the connections between the tension and compression members and the upper chord.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of an end of one of the compression rods.
The upper chord 1 consists of a straight channel bar having spaced openings 2 therein, said openings being elongated in one direction and having arcuate ends. The openings 2 are countersunk orchamfered at the upper side of the chord 1 as indicated at 3 in Fig. 3.
The lower chord 4 formed of a channel bar Y is spaced from the upper chord and is provided with a central portion 5 and end portions 6, offset lfrom said central portion. The portions of bar joining the ends 6 with the central portion 5 are inclined as shown in Fig. 1. rilhe lower chord 4 has a plurality7 of spaced openings aligned with openings 2 in the upper chord, and having countersunk portions at the lower face of the chord. The flanges on the upper and lower chords extend toward each other as shown in Fig. 1.
Ajplnralityof"tensionibars are mounted between'thecentraliportion '5 of the lower andthe oppositegpart of the upper chord. These bars vinclude a central tension "bar having "anintermediate 'foot portion '.Sfbetweenf'the diagonal Nportions Qwhile foot portions"areV provided 4at the .ends of portions?. The'foot portion 8 is positioned against'theinner Itace ofthe lower chord and thas Aan 'opening in registry with one of the openings thereimfwhile the end "foot por- "tions seat'againstthe upper chord and have openings registering Wvith the vopenings Athereinfat opposite sides of the opening in alignment with the foot portion "8. Tension '.barsllprovided'with foot portions 12 on opposite ends eXtendbetween the upper and .lower hords atopposte sides oflportions9 :off bar7 and arearranged in parallel relation theretoa'lthefbarsll at'one side ofbar 7 extendinginfonedirection and the'barsll at 'the other side ofban'? extending in an angu- .lardirection butparalleltothe adjacent por- 4`tion').v Ink each case the Jootportions 12 are seated against the chords `an'd'h-ave openings =1egistering with Vopenings in the chords.
.Compression .rods 13 extend between the npperandllower chords in substantially perl, pendiclilar 4relationand have'vreduced or recessed .ends 14extendingthrough the registeringopeningsin the` foot portions of the gtension'barsand the chords. y'These/ends .1.4

The opposite ends of chord 1- and theloi'- Set-pnds'of ohord'llfare secured together by connecting plates 16. For this purpose plates 16 are provided with projections 17 extending through openings 18 in the chords and have their ends swaged into the countersunk portions to permanently secure the parts together. The plates 16 are provided With openings 19 for use in mounting the .joists in position for use.
From the foregoing description it Will be seen that a joist construction is provided by this invention which comprises only three essential parts in which the compression rods perform a plurality of functions in securing an assembled structure Which is rigidfeco# nomical to manufacture, and eiiicient in ,use-j.
That is claimedis: -e 1. An article of manufacture providing a metal joist, comprising a substantially??-4 straight elongated bar forming an upperw chord member, a lower chord member' formed" of a bar having the ends offset relative to the central portion, connectingplatesbetvveen the offset ends of the lower chord member and the ends of the upperk chord member having the opposite edges secured to the bars forming said members, tension bars extending in diagonal relation betvveenv thercentral portions of the lower chord member and the yupper chord member, each tension bar having angularly` extending foot portions seated against said chord 'members and provided with openings in registry with openings in said chord members, compressionrods having reduced extensions on opposite ends, said A rods being mounted in substantially perpendicular relation between said chord mem'- bers and having shoulders formed byfsaid reduced ends seated against said foot portions, said reduced lportions lextending through said registering openings and having swaged terminals'for permanently securing said rods, bars and chord'imem'bers in assembled relation. e Y i` k 2. A metal joist comprising, an Vupper chord member, a lower chord member in spaced relation thereto, tension members having foot portions seated against said chord members and diagonally disposed portions extending between said chord members, the ioot portions of said tension members being provided With openings inregistry with openings in said chord'membersgand compression rods extending betvveenrsaid chord members` in substantially perpendicular relation thereto, said rods having in;- tegral shoulders bearing on the foot portions of said tension members, having a subst'a'rb tially uniform section in the plane'of said chords with end portions extendingthrough the registering openings in said foot portions and chordsgand provided with swaged terminals Yto completely lill said openings and 'permanently secure said rods, tension members and chord members in rigid assembled rela-tion.
