gyn/vento@ Patented Dec. 29, 1931 JOSEPH n. HIGHMARK, oFnuLUTEf MINNESOTL TESTING BIT l Applieation filed January 6,.,1930'." Yseringue. 418,702,
This invention relates to testing bits and has special reference to a novel form of bit for testpitting, and one particularly adapted for use in the examining of'swamp lands, I marshes, or the like.
The principal object is to providea bit for eflectually and easilyrpenetrating such lands and providing means for optionally sampling from time to time the substance through which the bit is passing.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
The accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts, is an elevation partly in section, of one of the improved assembled bits.
In the drawing 1 represents the outer or shell of the bit, having an enlarged ring like portion 2 spaced Afrom the uppermost end thereof. This annular portion is pluri-faced for convenience in the application of a wrench or the Ylike when applying or removing the bit to or from the tubular casing 3 whichr is internally screw threaded and designedto be applied to that portion of the bit indicated at 4 which is externally screw threaded for such purpose.
Beneath the nut like portion 2 the bit is tapered substantially as indicated at 5, and being hollow its entire length is internallyv screw threaded as at 6, and the bore thus screw threaded is preferably tapered its entire length, being greater in'diameter at the top than at the bottom for the reception of the externally screw-threaded and similarly tapered core or plug 7 The plug 7 is provided with a reduced and externally7 screw threaded shank 8 on the upper end thereof and which screw threaded portion of the plug is provided with a left hand thread, or at 'least a thread having the reverse pitch to that of the body portion of the plug. Y
The eXtreme lowerend of the plug 7 is designed to protrude from the eXtreme lower rounded end of the casing or shell 1 where the plug is screwed fully home within same, and is somewhat sharpened or pointed as at 9;provvidin'g an effective terminus ofthe tool foreasypenetrationj; and at l() is represented aftubularV stem or.4 pipe for attachment to the 'shankfof the plug 'for applying 'or removing same. f v
apiecey of tubing or pipe, such as indicated at pericia' 'i 8, when the same may be driven or forced into the earth, bog, or swamp, as the case may be, and when it becomes desirable to take a sample of the material through which the bit is passing, the driving is stopped, and a smaller tube indicated at 10 is slipped down into the tube 3 on the shank of the plug 7 and screwed Y up tightly thereupon. A continuation of this p. latter act or forcing on of said tube will result'in unscrewing the plug`7, due to the reverse pitch of the thread thereupon, when the plug may be readily removed without otherwise disturbing the bit, when samples may be taken by insertion of a suitable sampling tube through the bore of theshellV 1 vacated by the removal of the plug 7, and if further driving of the tube is desired, the plug 7 returned to the casing and repetition of the process resumed.
By such invention I have provided an eX-v ceedingly simple, eicient, and durable bit for such purpose, and one having proven in my own practice in the art of roadbuilding as being of inestimable value.
It will also be noted thatby forming Vthe y bore of the shell 1 and the plug 7 tapered, as described, the same affords ideal conditions for the centering of the plug when inserted within the shell. That is to say requiring no special attention in meshing the threads as the plug when dropped into position within the casing is automatically centered and all that is necessary is the screwing down of same .p
into position. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A bit of the class `described comprising a hollow internally screw threaded tapered shell, and ya similarly tapered and screw threaded solid plug for cooperative engagement within the shell. said plug extending .both above and below the shell and a reduced In operation the bit .isflrmly screwed into f shank integral With the upper end of said plug having external screw threads thereupon oppositely pitched to those upon the plug.
2. A two-part separable bit of the class described characterized by having tapered screw threaded cooperative surfaces throughout substantially their entire length, the innermost member of said bit having screwthreaded means of attachment to an operating rod, whereby whenY said" rod isp-screwed,
upon said bit and further turned it Will loosen same.
3. A two-part separable bit o scribed Comprising an internally serevw threaded shell, an externally screw-threaded plug for. cooperative lengagement, Within the sheIl',`sa-d plug extending above` and `below dier shell.f and' screw-threaded means -upon the i upper end ofthe plug opposit'ely pitchedto those upon the remainder of the plugt for attachment to an operating rod.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
JOSEPH H. HIGHMARK.
