.The invention relates generally to package holders and more particularly it relates to a holder adapted to retainone or more packfofnailsyadhesive or the like within the bore `of a roll of sheet materialsuch as tar paper.
In preparing some classes of sheetmaterial such as tar paper forshipment and storage,
. it is customary to form the materia-l into'rolls having a central bore therethrough and it is `desirable to supply with` each roll a package of nails and a package of adhesive sealing material such as tar. Such packages are usually made of a size which may be slipped into the bore in each roll and various means have been used for holding the packages within the bore; Y Y

To impart transverse strength tothe memi bers 10 and 11 and adaptthem for engagement with the curved sides of the bore, eachl member is preferably made of arcuatecross section as shown in Figs. 1 and 3; At their other or free ends, the presser Vmembers are to project inwardly of eachprovided with an end lug 16 bent so as the bore 12. MThus when the packages 18 and 14` are placed between the presser membersthey are positioned between the lugs 16 at one end of the presser members and the strut 15 at the other end.
To spread the two members 10 and 11 apart and into firm frictional contact with the sides of the bore 12 so as to prevent sliding of the holder longitudinally of the bore, spring means is provided which acts directly between the two presser members without exerting a crushing stress upon the packages positioned therebetween. This means is preferably formed trom resilient sheet metal and comprises an elongated strip designated generally as 17 in Fig. 2. In the exemplary form shown herein, the strip 17 is of substantially the same width as the presser members 10 and 11 and has a central portion 18 (Fig. 1) seeuredto the presser member 10. rlhe portion 18 may be attached to the presser member 10 by tangs`19 struck `from the presser member 10 and projecting through longitudinally spaced apertures 20 formed in the portion 18 so that the tenes' may be bent back to engage the inner side of the central portion 18. VArt the end adjacent the lug 16, the strip 17 isbent to form a resilient arm 21 extendingl transversely of the holder substantially parallel to and closely adjacent to the lug 16 and projecting'toward the other presser member 11;1 The other end of the strip 17 is similarly 'bent to form a second resilient arm 22 at a point spaced from the arm 21 a distance substantially equal to the length of ene'package, for example, the cylindrical container 13 which'holds the tar. At their ends the arms 21 and 22 are bent toward each other so as to form springs 23 extending along the other presser member 11. n
The springs 23 are normally disposed at an acute angle to the presser member 11,' as shown in Fig. 2, and when the two presser members are compressed toward 'each other and placed in the'bore 12 as shown in Fig. 1, thesprings 23, acting through the cross-arms 21 and 22, tend to spread the presser members intoirm contact with the sides of the bore.
To insure proper .operation of the springs 23 the ends thereof which engage the inner arcuate surface of the presser member 11 are preferably made of` avcorresponding arcuate form, as showny at 24 in Figs. 1 and 3, so as to holdl the springs against transverse displacement relatively to the pressermember 11:V ISince'I the ends of the springs 23 slide alongY the presser member 11 when the springs are compressed', the member 11 acts as means topreventfdefacing of the surface of the bore.
lt willbe seen that the resilient cross-erin 21 engages. the lugs 16 and thus cooperates with' those lugs in maintaining the container 12 inthe holder. Because of this cooperation of the lugs 16 with the arm 2l, the entire strip 17 may be made or' comparatively thin metal. Tae lug 16 on the presser men ber 11 also aids in insuring proper operation of the device since it fixes the longitudinal position of the free end of the arm 21 with relation to the holder and causes the spring 23 of that arm to be bent in a predetermined manner.
Since the arm 22 extends across the holder intermediate the ends of the presser members, it will be seen that this arm acts as a spacer between the container 13 and the package 14. is the spring 23 of the arm 22 is bent in pressing' the two members together the arm 22 is bowed upwardly (Fig. 1) and if the package 14: is of the proper size, it will be pressed against the strut 15, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will also beissen that as the springs 23 areI bent in pressing the two members together, the ends of the springs slide along the presser member 11 and the arms 21 and 22 are bent toward each other so as to engage the end edges of the container 13 at Joints adjacent to the springs 23. Thus the bending of the springs 23 to their operative positions, shown in Fig. 1, serves to fix the longitudinal positions of both of the packages relative to the two presser members 10 and 11. Furthermore the engagement ofthe arms 21 and 22 with the container 13 at points ad- Vjacent to the springs tends to stiien the springs and thereby causes more eiiicient operation of the device. It will be apparent that since the arms and springs act directly between the'two presser members, the device is fixed in pesition in the bore by means which does not exert an undue crushing force up'on the packages, and because of this fact the container 13 may be made of inexpensive material, for example, of thinA gage Vmetal or ot card-board. A
l claim as my invention:
1. holder tor retaining packages in the bore of a roll, said holder comprising a pair oi' ibstantially straight presser members adapted to extend longitudinally along opposite sides et the bore, means connecting said presser members together arranged toV permit relative transverse movement of the members, a strip oit' metal having its central portion connected to one of the presser members at points spaced longitudinally thereot' and having portions extending across the opposite ends of a package positioned between the presser members, the ends of said strip being bent toward each other so as to id along the inside of the other presser ber with theirends spaced a substantial distance from the side of the package, said ends being adapted to urge the two presser members apart and into Contact with the opposite sides ot' the bore.
2. A, iolder for retaining packages in the bore et a roll, said holder comprising a pair ot substantially straight presser 'members adapted to extend longitudinally along opposite sides of the bore and to have a container positioned therebetween, and a pair of resilient sheet metal arms connected to one of said presser members and adaptedto extend transversely across the oppositel ends of a container to prevent relative longitudinal displacement of the container and said last mentioned presser member, said arms having their ends bent toward each other so as to form springs projecting along the other presser member at an angle thereto, said bent ends being adapted to engage the other presser member so as tohold the two presser members irmly in engagement with the opposite sides of the bore.
3. A holder forretaining packages in the bore'ot a roll or the like, said holder comprising a pair of substantially straight presser members, each member being-of a length substantially greater than the length of the package to be held, means connecting one end of one member to one end of the other to permit relative transverse movement ofthe two members, a pair of resilient arms connected to one of the members at points spaced longitudinally thereof and adapted to extend transversely across and bear against the opposite ends of a container positioned between the members, one of said arms being positioned adjacent to the free end of the mem'- ber upon which it is mounted, the projecting ends of said arms being bent toward each Y other so as to 'extend along the side of the container at an angle thereto, in a position to' engage the other presser member and yieldingly press the two members apart, and an end flange formed on the ree end of said other presser member and adapted to engage the adjacent resilient arm to strengthen the same and prevent excessive displacement of said arm longitudinally of the holder.
4. A holder Jfor retaining a pair of packages in the bore of a roll or the like, said holder comprising a pair of substantially straight presser members, each member being of a length slightly greater than the combined length of the two packages to be held, means connecting one end of one member yto the corresponding end of the'other to permit relative transverse movement of the two members, transversely extending means adjacent to the other end of one of the members adapted to bear one end of a container positioned between the members, and a resilient sheet metal arm connected to one of the mem. bers and extending transversely toward the other member across and adjacent to the other end of the container, the space between said arm and said connecting means being adapted to receive a second package, the projecting end oi said arm being bent to extend along the side of the container at an angle thereto in a `position to engage the other presser member and yieldingly press the two members apart.

A holder for retaining packages in thel ,bore of a roll or the like, said holder comprising a substantially straightpresser member formed from sheet metal and a strip of resilient sheet metal having one section disposed thereof along one face of said presser member, said-section having aplurality of apertures lformed therein, a4 plurality of tangs struck from said presser member extending through said apertures and clenched on the opposite side of said section, said strip at one end oi' said section being bent to provide a spring arm projecting :trom said member in a generally transverse direction and 9:7
