This invention relates to a removable collapsible filler for use in connection with egg trays, cardboard cartons and the like.

In carrying the inventive conception into practice, I have developed a simple and economical collapsible cardboard iiller of a hill and dale type wherein the companion portions are collapsible in an accordionlike manner, to provide substantially V-shaped receptacles or saddles for reception of the eggs, the walls of said receptacles being provided with complelnental openings to permit portions of the eggs to protrude therethrough in such va manner as to suspend the eggs in the carton and to avoid breakage.

In developing the idea, I have found it expedient Aand practical to provide a foldable apertured sheet or blank of cardboard having score or fold lines defining the companion portion whereby to permit expanding of the blank in a carton or box'to provide the V- shaped channel-like receptacles for the eggs.

In addition, I provide partitioning pieces which constitute dividers for developing individual cells or pockets for the respective eggs- Y The particular details which characterize this arrangement will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of an ordinary cardboard carton provided with the improved iiller designed in accordance with the invention.

In the drawings, the reference character 6 in Figure 2 designates a box-like body portion of an ordinary egg carton and 7 represents the, lidi. Each partition element comprises ra length of cardboard 16 pro-vided at its ends with T-shaped` extensions or heads 17. These heads 17 are designed to be interlocked with vertical slotsile 18 formed in the depending end walls 19 of the complete filler. v

' Incidently, when the filler is bent up to the position shown in Figure 4, the walls 10 and 11 assume downwardly converging rela-1 I0 tionship and thereby provide V-shaped channel-like receptacles. When the partition pieces 16 are slipped up into the slots 13 they define individual egg pockets. It will be noted in this connection that the numerals 2O 76 designate struck-out tongues which are arranged between the bight and saddle portions of the receptacles as shown in Figure 2 of the finished product.

Then too, on the upper edge of the elements 16 are V-shaped extensions 21 which lit into the crown Yportion of the so-called channel -shaped receptacles. Thus, by slipping the eggs into the companion portions of the slots 12 they are suspended or saddled; 85 in place in a cushion-like manner.

It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in con-, nection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.

Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the tield-96 of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.

I claim:

As a new product of manufacture, an egg carton filler comprising a collapsible card-.s100

board blank formed into distinguishable sectors, said sectors functioning as walls, the end sectors being bent downwardly into vertical positions and the other sectors being bent into downwardly converging relationship to provide egg receiving channels, said other sectorsbeing provided with egg holes and on opposite sides ofthe holes rwith partition slots, said holes and slots extending through the lower ends of the channels, partition pieces removably fitted in said` slotsiandmdeining individual egg cells, the endlsectors constituting depending Walls and being provided with retaining slots, the endA portions of said partition pieces being `formed with vertically arranged T-shaped heads having interlocking detachable connection with said slots in the end sectors, the heads extending beyond the slots to provide spacers for en- 20 gagelnent with the adjacent walls of a box, cach partition piece being provided on the upper edge with V-shaned. extensions nested in the crown portions of the adjoined channel forming sectors and being further provided near its bottoni with outwardly bent spacing tongues arranged between the lower portions of the compleinental sectors.
