More particularly stated, the invention relates to Composite piles, such asfpiles com- Y pri'sing wood and concretesections. The invention has for its salient object to providesimple, practical and eflicient means for anchoring the two sections `ofthe pile together. l
Another object of the invention is to provide means for anchoring a form or casing in which the concrete is Joined to the wood section of the pile, so constructedv and arranged that the casing will be securely anchored and heldV against lifting or relative l5 movement with respect to the wood section when the form or casing is filled with concrete.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. lis an elevational view of a composite pile constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional eleva-- tion taken at right angles to Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the upper end portion of the wood section of the pile; Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the structure shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a slightly Inodied form of construction.
The invention briefly described consists of a composite pile comprising a pair of sections, one preferably formed of wood and the other of concrete. The invention may be used, however, to join two concrete sections. One section, such as the Wood section, has a reduced upwardly extending end and a rod is secured to the end and extends transversely therethrough. The other, or concrete section, has an outer casing `or form within which the concrete is poured. The lower end of the casing has slots for receiving the ends of the rod and anchoring the casing to the rod and wood pile section. A. pan or cup? shaped flange is preferably placed on the lower or wood section of the pile and rests 50 on the shoulder formed between the main body portion of the wood'section and the rel duced end. The Vcasing or form rests at its' lower end on the flange or pan.

In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, there is Shown lin Fig. 3 the upper end portion of a wood pile comprising a main body portion l0 and a reduced upper end portion 1l. It should be understood, however, that this pile sectionmay beformed 'of concrete, if desired. A `pan l2 having a central opening'V l3'is placed over the reduced upper endV orllt-enon ll and rests on the shoulder 14 formed at the juncture of the portions 10 and'll ofv the wood section of the pile.l
A rod 15 is secured to the portion andv entends therethrough, as shown in Fig. 3.
The concrete or upper section of the pile is enclosed within a shell orcasing 2() which is provided at its lower end with diametrical` ly disposed bayonet slots 2l and 22 which v'extend upwardly from thel lower end ofthe shell and substantially at right angles to the axis of the shell. The portions of the shellk having the slots formed therein are preferably reinforced by plates 23 and 24which are slotted in a manner similar to the lower end of the shell. If desired, the slots 21A and 22A may be formed in the plates 23 and 24 only (as shown in Fig. 5)' and not in theA and bayonet'joints. Therodand coacting` portions ofthe shell securely hold the casingor shell `down so that the shell-will rest in the pan 12, as shown in. From theforegoing description it will be seen that a simple, practical and efficient composite Yp ile has been designed and that the shell or casing will be securely anchored shell whereby to lock the shell to the wood to the lower section of the pile.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What we claim is l. A composite sectional pile comprising a section having a reduced end, a rod extending transversely through said end, a concrete section comprising a metallic casing having a reinforcing means at its lower end provided with longitudinal slots adapted to receive the ends of said rod and angular slots communieating therewith, whereby the casing is locked to said rod, and concrete filling said casing and surrounding said rod and reduced end. y
2. A composite sectional pile comprising a Isection having a reduced end, a rod extending transversely through said end, a. concrete section comprising a metallic casing having a reinforcing means at its lower end, said reinforcing means being provided with longitudinal slots adapted to receive the ends of said rod and angular slots communicating therewith, whereby the casing is locked to said rod, said casing end extending about said reinforcing means and about the ends of said rod whereby to enclose the same, and concrete iilling said casing and surrounding said rod, reduced end and reinforcing means.
3. A composite sectional pile comprising a section having a reduced end, a rod extending transversely through said end, a concrete section comprising a metallic casing having a reinforcing means at its lower end, said reinforcing means and lower casing end being provided with longitudinal slots adapted to lreceive the ends of said rod and angular slots communicating therewith, whereby the casing is locked to said rod, and concrete lilling said casing and surrounding said rod and reduced end.
4:. A composite pile comprising a wood section having a tenon at one end, a rod carried by and extending through said tenon, a pan surrounding the tenon, a metal shell surrounding the tenon and resting at its I lower end in said pan, said rod also extending through the lower end of said shell whereby to lock the shell to the wood section and in the pan, and concrete filling said shell.
5. A composite pile comprising a wood section having a tenon at one end, a pair of projections extending laterally from said tenon, a pan surrounding the tenon, a metal shell surrounding the tenon and resting at its lower end in said pan, said projections also extending through the lower end of said section and in the pan, and concrete filling said shell.
6. A composite pile comprising a wood section having a tenon at one end, a rod carried by and extending through said tenon, a pan surrounding the tenon, a concrete section having its lower end resting in said pan and comprising a metallic casing having a reinforcing means at its lower end, said reinforcing means being provided with longitudinal slots adapted to receive the ends of said rod and angular slots communicating therewith whereby the casing is locked to said tenon and in the pan, said casing end extending about said reinforcing means and about the ends of said rod whereby to enclose the same, and concrete filling said casing and surrounding said rod, reduced end, and reinforcing means.
