Where it is desired to printpgen'erally grooves have been provided in vertical lines for columns or tabular work, the cross members of the present invention are preferably in the form of printing rules disposed generally circumferentially of the drum, or, where the carrier is in the form of a fiat base member or plate, these cross members are disposed over the surface of this flat plate across the direction of extension of the slugs and, in either case, are provided with raised printing rules or edges for printing the vertical lines. ln this case, the unitary character of the less than type high slugs will maintain the desired relative positions of the cross members, not only when the cross members are in place upon the carrier, but will maint-ain that positioning upon removal of the assembled slug and cross member unit from the carrier so that this unit may be relaced without again effecting the desired relationship of the slugs and cross members. According to the present invention, the less than type high slugs are, preferably, grooved generally transversely across the tops of the slugs. am aware that cross b the upper ends of type high slugs and that tie members have been secured therein, but these provisions have been in connection with type high slugs for tabular work and the cross grooves have been confined to the raised printing rules upon the upper ends of the slugs. That is, the lower ends of the grooves have terminated at the base of the printing rule projection and the cross members have, therefore, seated directly upon the upper ends of the slugs with the result that there is not a true base for the cross members and these cross members will not be true if there is any variation in the heights of the slugs or any irregularity in the upper surfaces thereof. ln the present invention the cross grooves extend through the depths of the upper lianged heads of the slugs. Vhen the slugs are positioned upon the carrier, the inner or lower ends of the `grooves preferably extend inwardly to or inwardly beyond the surface of the carrier so that the cross members, upon ins-ertion through these grooves, will rest and find support not upon the slugs themselves, but upon the outer surface of the drum or flat base plate. hWhere the slugs are provided with printing rules, and assuming desired to print lines or other matter that it is with the cross members, the grooves extend through the rule projections on the slugs so that the line printing edges upon the cross members may extend out to the printing edges of the rule projections on the slnefs.
/Vhile the grooves and cross members are illustrated as of generally V-shaped formation with the apices presented outwardly, it is to be understood that other equivalent formations are contemplated within the scope of the present invention.
With the present invention, it is unnecessary to block up a solid mass of slugs in the manner required with the type high slugs and cross rules as previously provided. l believe that it is broadly new to interlock either a rule or binder with the slugs and to support the rule or binder upon the drum, flat base plate or other carrier for the slugs.
So far as this aspect of the invention is concerned, it is immaterial whether the surface of the carrier is circular, as in a drum type printing machine, or flat for use on standard flat bed presses. The supporting of the rules or binders which extend across the slugs upon the carrier avoids any objectionable results where there are variations or inequalities in the slugs and, at the same time, the slugs may be spaced apart with relatively wide gaps therebetween. Unless, of course, it is desired to fill in the spaces with rules or other printin material, there need be only a few slugs at spaced 'ntervals for binding the cross members together. The present invention enables disposing printing characters on the slugs up close to the rules or binders which extend across the slugs. The bases of the rules or cross binders may be just as wide, or even wider, than heretofore, but, due to the extension of these bases down through the flanged heads of the slugs, the width of the rules or binders at the outer printing surfaces of the slugs may be less and the letters or other printing matter upon the slugs may therefore be brought up closer to the rules or binders.

printing lines or slugs 9 together to form a unitary printing plate or combinationwhich isadapted for mounting as a unit upon the carrier by the simple expedient of engaging the retention means in the slugs 9 with the cooperating retention means in or on the carrier and sliding the unit into place longitu- :linally of the retention means. When the printing assembly is in place, the bases of the binder strips 22 seat upon the outer rail surfaces of the carrier so that the seating of these binder strips is independent of varia tions or irregularities in the slugs and, at the same time, the necessity for blocking up a solid mass of slugs is avoided.
In Fig. 1() a portion of a slug and binder strip assembly embodying the present invention is shown removed from the drum. Obviously, the binder strips 22 retain the desired assembly of the slugs 9 and the entire unit is adapted for replacement upon the carrier as a unit at any time and Without again assembling the slugs or individually securing them to the carrier in the desired relationship. Relatively Wide spaces are shown between the slugs 9, such as obtained by skipping spaces between the slugs as shown in Fig. 't' and, at the same time, the engagement of the binder strips 22 in the slug grooves 2O holds the slugs in proper relation. The relatively tight [it of the strips 22 in the slugs will hold the slugs in substantially any desired spaced relation, but even if there is some slipping of the slugs along these strips, that Vis not objectionable, because the slugs are all held in assembled relation and may be conveniently slipped along the strips 22 for insertion into the desired chases of the drum or flat plate carrier.
At the same time with the unitary type line or rule formation of the printing slugs as distinguished from the individual printing characters or printing blocks or blank blocks, the desired relative positions of a number of printing rules 22 may be maintained relative to the slugs 9 and relative to each other upon removal of the assembled unit from the carrier, so that when this unit is replaced the desired rule relationship will be provided Without again effecting it.
Integral slug lines 3() may be inserted into the chases of the carrier adjacent the ends of the printing units as shown in Fig. 1 for holding the rule or tie strips 22 against displacement in a direction longitudinally of said strips. The slugs 30 may have printing characters or printing rules or other symbols or combination thereof, or these slugs 3() may be blank slugs for the sole purpose of providing stops at the ends of the printing assembly to prevent endWise displacement of the strips 22.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, the slugs 9 are placed adjacent eachother in adjacent chases of the carrier and some of the slugs 9 have printing rules, While others have printing characters.
ln Figs. 6 and 7 the assembly is substantially the same as Figs. 1 and 2, but in this ycase the slugs y40, instead of being placed adjacent each other in adjacent chases of the carrier, are spaced apart so that there will be empty chases between the spaced slugs 40. rFliese slugs 40 may, as before, be blank slugs for holding the strips 42, or they may have printing rules or type or other printing characters thereon, asdesired.
The strips 42 may have printing rules 42 or these printing rules may be omitted, as before, in Which case the strips 42 Will serve as binder strips only for the slugs 40.
Where the slugs 9 are provided with printing rules 12 in Figs. 1 to 5 and 8, or Where the slugs 40 are provided With printing rules 40 in Figs. 6, 7 and 10, the grooves 2O (Fig. 8) continue through these rules at 20 and are of a formation conforming With the formation of the projecting rules on the printing slugs.
In the embodiment of Fig. 11, the slugs 45 are provided With printing characters shown in the form of type letters, although this may vary, and in this case the strips 4S serve as tie strips as in the previous embodi ments and seat upon the rail surfaces of the carrier, as before. In this case, the outer edges of the strips 48 are not provided with projecting printing rules, but terminate in- Wardly of the printing line so that they will not engage the paper or other material with which the printing line cooperates, nor perform any printing function, but Will serve merely as tie elements.
In the embodiment of Fig. 12,1 b ave shown the invention in connection with a fiat base plate for use With flat bed presses. rEhis flat base plate is indicated at 50 and is provided with under-cut channels 51 corresponding With the channels 7 of Figs. 1 and 2. The slugs 52 are similar to the slugs of the previous embodiment and are mounted in the channels or chases 51 with their outer flanged heads 53 seating upon the outer surface of the carrier 50.
The strips 54 are applied in the same manner and -may be varied as pointed out in connection with the previous embodiment, the only difference being that the strips are, in this case, straight with their bases scating upon the outer surface of the carrier 50. They are interlocked with the slugs in the manner pointed out in connection with the previous embodiment and they may be provided with printing rules 54', or these printing rules 54 may be omitted. rThe slugs 52 are shown as spaced apart by skipping chases 51, and the slugs may be provided With printing rules 56, as shown, or with printing characters or the printing rules and printing characters may be omitted and the slugs 52 used merely for supporting and binding the rules 54 together. As before. the interlocking of the slugs 52 and strips 54 individual i rule 63 is applied 72 similar toithose' previously .stripV interlocking binds these elementsV into a unitary assembly wliichmay be conveniently removed and replaced as a unit and, at the same time`, the
assembly is flexible, in that the partsV are all separable and may be removed and replaced' with others.
In Fig. 13 I have provided for applying horizontal rules without skipping spaces between the slugs.
The' base 66 of the rule' 63 is preferably tlat and preferably seats upon the outer rail surface of the carrier when the assembled slugs 60 and strips 62 are applied thereto.

17. ln combination, a carrier, a plurality of slugs adapted to be interlocked with said carrier, said slugs having flanged heads having transverse grooves through the depths of said heads, said grooves being formed to provide opposed retaining faces, and a plurality of cross strips engaged in said grooves and provided with complementary faces cooperating With said retaining faces for interlocking engagement With said slugs to the depths of said heads.
18. 1n combination, a carrier, a plurality of slugs adapted to be interlocked with said carrier, said slugs having flanged heads having transverse grooves through the depths of said heads, said grooves being formed to provide opposed retaining faces, and a plurality of cross strips engaged in said grooves and provided With complementary faces cooperating With said retaining faces for interlocking engagement with said slugs to the depths of said heads, said strips having bases adapted to seat upon said carrier in the assembled relation of said slugs, strips and carr1er.

In combination, a carrier, a plurality of slugs adapted to be interlocked With said carrier, said slugs having flanged heads having transverse grooves through the depths of said heads, said grooves being formed to provide opposed retaining faces, and providing smaller interruptions of the surfaces of slugs than in the remainder of said heads, and a plurality of cross strips engaged in said grooves and having complementary faces the retaining faces for interlocking engagement with said slugs to the depths of said heads and through the interruptions.

In combination, a carrier having a plurality of chases, a plurality of slugs having retention means cooperating With said chases for interlocking the slugs with the carrier and having flanged heads extending outwardly beyond the carrier, said heads having transverse grooves therein, and tie strips eX- tending through said grooves and interlocking with said heads to the depths of the heads whereby said slugs and strips are rigidly joined together for attachment to or detachment from the carrier as a unit, said strips being adapted to seat upon the surface of the carrier in attached position,
