Description

Dec. 29, 1'931. A. H. MORSE MUSIC REST FOR PIANOS Filed June 26, 1931 N .QQ
gigi' Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES MUSIC BEST FOR PIANOS My invention relates to the type of music rest that will automatically open into place when the top of the piano is opened and will close when the top is closed.
The object of my invention is to so construct the music rest that it will be folded into the front of the case when not in use and when used with a piano that has a folding keybed the finished piano will take up very little room when not in use.
Another object of my invention is to so construct the controlling mechanism as to hold the music rest and upper panel in the proper position for reading the music when the piano is in use.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of an upright piano with the upper panel in vertical position and the music rest folded in. to form part of the front oi. the case. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view showing the top opened and holding the upper panel in slanting position with the music rest in position to hold the music.
A piano case 1 has an `upper panel 2 that has a music rest 3 hinged along the lower edge of the panel. A movable top 4 is hinged to a fixed top 5 to be swung back. Pivoted to the movable top 4 is a link 6 that connects to a lever 7 which in turn connects to a link 8 that is pivoted to an arm 9 which is fastened to the music rest 3. The lever 7 is pivoted to a plate 10 that is fastened at the side of the case 1 and the arm 9 has a roller 11 that is guided in a slot in a plate 12.
The upper panel 2 is pivoted to the ease 1 on the pin 13 and has another panel 14 hinged at the top of the panel. This panel 14 slides forward and backward on a. guide 15 so as to cover the works on the inside of the piano when open for playing.
The ordinary keys 16 and 17 are used to operate any standard piano action which is` not shown. y
When it is wished to open the piano for playing the movable top 4 is raised upward and rearward pulling the link 6 upward thus raising the lever 7 causing it to force the link 8 downward which in turn forces the arm 9 down causing the roller 11 to follow the slot in the plate 12. By forcing the arm 9 down v1931. serial No. 547,060.
PATENT ori-lcs ARTHUR H. MORSE, OF CINCINNATI, Omo, ASSIGNOR TO THE BALDWIN COMPANY, OF
. CINCINNATI, OHIO and the roller 11 following the slot in plate 12 the upper panel 2 is tilted and the music rest 3 1s swung up to the proper position for holding the music. The panel 14 slides back on guides 15 when the panel 2 is tilted rearward.
Many changes may be made in the controlling mechanism but what I `claim as my invention is n A piano case having a pivoted up er front panel, a hinged top, a hinged music rest, a. lever attached to the side of the case, connections from the hinged top to the lever and from the lever to the hinged music rest to make all move in unison when the hinged top is moved.
