Description

F. R. INGLE Dec. 29, 1931.
ASH TRAY Filed March 31, 1931 FIG. 2
' FIG. I
FIG. 4
FIG- 3 INVENTOR Patented Dec. 29, 1931 ,UNITED, STATES FRANK a. menu, or 003mm, amma Application filed March 31, 1931. Serial 1%. 526587,
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of ash trays, and is'also adaptable for use as a goblet rest or the like, and has as one of its important objects the.
5 utilization of a ceramic tile in combination with a perimetrical band elastically adhered thereto in the formation of a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple, cheaply and easily manufactured and assembled, and possesses a richness in artistic appearance, the associating of the band with the tile not only combinedly forming a novel and new device butproviding a protective covering for the tile as well.
For the purpose ofbetter understanding the invention, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein are shown a classifactory group of figures, twoof which are generic species of a third, and a crosssection complementary to all, and in which;
' Fig. 1 is a plan view illustrating one form of an ash tray or gobletrest constructed in an ornamental style in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 are alternate subordinate or modified plan views of the same, the ornamentation being omitted, and V Fig. 4 is a typical cross-sectional view.
In detail, the invention comprisesin'com bination a base or bottom 1 consisting of a ceramic tile of any preferred type, shape, size or character, selected either in plain color or ornamented in figured designs in color, about which I circumscribe in adhering re lation a metal band 2, consisting of bronze or other preferred material.
Between the metal band 2 and the tile 1 is interposed a cushion of elastic cementS or other adhesive which acts as a bmder forv 40 applying the band to thetile. As a result of the elastic cement between the band and the tile, the tile is protected by the band from breakage when it is roughly handled or permitted to drop, as the elastic cement acts as an 5 intermediary to cushion the impact of the drop, thereby providing with the band an ad ditional protection to the tile. v
The top of the band 2 is made to extend above the face oft-he tile 1, forming a lip whereby to provide a receptacle therewith,
place it will cover the entire bottom of the for the accommodation of "cigar or cigarette ashes when used as an ash tray or for the collection of moisture from goblets arising from the serving of drinks therein, whereby to preyint thesoil of table tops, coverings, and the 1 e. V r
The tile 1 as well as the perimetrical bands are adapted to be made in various sizes and shapes as shown by the modified forms in Figs, 2 and 3.
The bands 2 are usually made somewhat larger than the tile 1, not only to provide for a space for the adhesive but also to accommodate the various discrepancies existing in diffelrent sizes resultant from the baking of the ti e. 1
The bands 2 are usually made in one piece to accommodate the style of the tile to be circumscribed, the elastic cement 3 or adhesive beingspread on the tile before the peri-, metricalbandis applied therearoundabout.
Upon the adhesion of the band to theadhesive the combination of the tile and band is unitized.
The metal band 2 is cemented to the tile 1 in such a manner that the lower edge of said band is slightly more than flush with the bottom face ofthe tile, and then when the protective layer 4 of felt or the like is glued in device. Said layer 41 keeps the device from marring furniture or other supporting means in conjunction with which the device is used.
In case of accidental dropping of the device the fact that the lower edge of the band projects slightly below the bottom face of the tile safeguards the tile against direct contact with the object upon which it falls, the metal band, instead receiving the impact, the force of which is kept from the tile by the layer 3 of elastic cement.
I claim: 7
1. In an ash tray or goblet rest, in combination, a. flat tile, having elastic cement spread on to the perimeter of the tile, a perimetrical hand about said tile, said elastic cement providing a, binder for joining the band to the tile and providing a protection for the tile.
2. In an ash tray or goblet rest, in combination, a tile, elastic cement spread on the perimeter of the tile, a perimetrical band about said tile to form a receptacle therewith,
said elastic cement providing a binder for joining the band to the tile and providing a 5 reinforcing for the tile.
3. In an ash tray in combination with a ceramic tile, a peripheral band circumscribing said tile, said band being secured to said tile by a layer of elastic cement, said band projecting above the upper surface of said tile, and a layer of protective materia-l'secured to the bottom of the tile and also overlying the adjacent edge of said band.
