Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITEin STATES Tessa-'17 PATENT OFFICE y JOHN LE MAY, A'UI'RORA., ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 AURORA METAL'COMPANY,`OF
AURORA,` ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION F ILLINOIS ART OF CASTING `Application 1ed` September 13, 1930. Serial No. 481,777.
This invention relates to improvements in the art of casting and is especially applicable to the casting ometal. The invention will be found of particular use in connection with die casting under pressure or under vacuum or reduced pressure.
Among the features of my invention is the provision of means for preventing the shortening of elongated cast members.
For the purpose of illustrating 'myv invention I have shown the same as it could be used in connection with the casting yof a worm, or grid. It is to be understood, however, that the invention can be used in connection with C' the casting of any elongated member where 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line 2 on Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the casting in lace, Fig. 4 is a view of the completed worm, ig. 5 is a vertical sectional Iview of a grid, Fig. 6 is a view of the completed grid, and Fig.
7 is a view taken as indicated by the line on Fig. 6. A
As shown in the drawings, a mold for casting a worm may consist of three portions,
namely, the end portionJlO, the center portion 11, and the end portion 12 containing the lill- The centerportion 11 contains the cavity 13 for castin the completed worm 14.'L It will be seen t iat if such la worm is cast out-0f some metal that has considerable shrinkage upon cooling the same will bind in the mold unless means to prevent such shortening in length are provided. In
'order to prevent such shortening in length I 15a at the end over which'the casting extends.
This member 15 has a great resistance against shortening in length and acts as a com ression member to prevent the casting 14V romy shortening in length when it cools.
The endsJ of the member 15 are preferably reduced in diameter and extend as indicated properly centered and spaced in the mold cavity 13 when the worm is cast. A suitable gate or ll ing hole 12iL may be provided in the end member 12 on the mold for the pouringY of the metal. After the mold has been poured and after. it has cooled, the end portions 'r' and 12 of the mold may be removed and the completed worm 14 mounted on the compression member removed from the central part 11 of the mold by screwing the same out. Itis to be particularly noted that the casting 14 is long enough to cover the shoulders 15a on the end of the compression member 15 so that such shoulders can take some of the pull of the .casting 14 when the same tends to ,.5
shorten in length.
The invention is also embodied in the apparatus shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 for the casting of a grid. For example, as here shown, it may be desired to cast a grid with the elongated bars 20, 20, joined by the connecting members 21, 21. Shrinkage in length of the elongated'members 20 would shearb the member 21 or damage thesame. In order to prevent such shrinkage or shortening in length of the members I cast in each of the -same a compression member 22,'for example steel. This compression member has as understood shoulders 22a, 22, and the member 2O is long enough to cover these shoulders.
,. The moldv as shown i-n Figs. 5, 6 and 7 may u include` two endl pieces 23 and 24 and two separable Vcentral portions 25 (but one being shown in Fig. 5). The cavities in the central portions l25 for casting the members 20 are indicated by 26. The compression member 22 may be provided with extensions reduced in diameter as indicated by 22h, said extensions being supported in suitable holes 23, 24a in the end members 23 and-(24 of the mold, respectively. It will be seen that when the grid has been cast as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the compression members 22 will be embedded in the elongated members 20 and the shoulders of the compression member also covered. This compression member being thus embedded in the elongated member 22 will prevent shortening of the same when it cools.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modiiications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventionas disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In the art of casting an elongated member with laterally projecting parts, the method consisting of providing a compression member having shoulders thereon, placing said compression member in the mold cavity, and casting metal about said compression member and over said shoulders, whereby the ends of said cast member upon Cooling engage the shoulders of said compression member to prevent said cast member from materially shortening and damaging said laterally projecting arts. P In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of September, 1930. JOHN LE MAY.
