Description

E.'R.-'.BE'1TS.
HAND SNOW-FLOWS.
Patented Oct. 31,1876.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIC'E.
EDWIN R. BETTS, OF BEAR LAKE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND SNOW-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,834, dated October 31, 1876; application tiled July 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN B. BETTS, of Bear Lake, Warren county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Snow-Plow, of which the following is a specitication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view; Fig. 2, a side View; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section on line (3 C, Fig. 1, of my improved snow-plow; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a roller-arm, guiding the mold-board on the rail.
Similar letters indicate oorrespondin g parts.
My invention relates to an improved handplow for clearing railroad-rails, in a convenient manner, of snow; and the invention consists of a snow plow whose mold board runs by guide-rollers and grooves along the rail, and throws the snow from the inside of the same by a curved upright flange or plate on the outside of the braces.
In the drawing, A represents the moldboard, that is made with a recess and bottom groove, a, at one side, the grooved part resting on the top of the rail, while the recessed part in front of the same slides sidewise along the rail. The tapering front edge of the groove a is strengthened by a sheet-metal step or lining, b, the tapering front end of the mold-board being similarly lined with sheet metal. The mold board is guided along the rail by a roller, d, turning in a side recess of groove a, and bearing against the outside of the railhead, as shown in Fig. 3. An additional rear post or brace may be arranged at the mold-board, to guide the same more steadily, by top and side rollers, along the rail, as shown in Fig. 4. One or more handles, B, serve to push the plow forward on the rail, the other corner of the mold-board resting, by means of a downwardprojecting runner, O, on the ties, and moving readily over the same.
The snow is taken up by the mold-board at the inside of the rail, and conveyed, by a vertical and outwardly-curved flange or plate, D, to the outside of the track, where it is dropped.
In case of heavy snow, a rope may be attached to the front face of the mold-board, so that two persons may work the plowone pulling, the other pushing.
The snow-plow is easily handled, and enables the track -tender rapidly to clear the track at the station and over his section, by clearing one rail in going and the other in re turning.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A snow-plow made of a grooved and recessed mold-board, provided with a roller for guiding it on the rail, the front runner, and a curved outwardly extending flange or plate, D, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The mold-board having tapering recess and bottom groove, with roller to guide the same upon the rail, as shown and described.
EDWIN R. BETTS.
