PARTING STRI P Filed Nov. 8, 1930 Y 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Q By A ttorncy Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WARREN C. ELLIS, F FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO ELLIS PRODUCTS COMPAY, OF
FLIN T, MICHIGAN, A. CORPORATION 0F MICHIGAN PARTING- STRIP Application filed November 8, 1930. Serial No. 494,381.
The present invention relates to parting strips for windows and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction whereby a weatherproof joint is provided between the upper and lower window sashes and the window frame at all times.
Another important object of the invention 1G is to provide a parting strip of the aforementioned character embodying a novel construction whereby lateral adjustmentJ in the Window frame grooves is had at all times should the grooves become Wider or narrower due to variations in the weather or from other causes, the invention further including means for manually adjusting the strip laterally in the groove. n
Another important object of the invention is to provide a party strip of the character described having formed integrally thereon a sealing lip or lange for engagement with an adjacent window sash to provide a weather-proof oint between the parting strips and the sash and to Jrictionally engage said sash for retaining the same in adjusted position,
thus obviating the necessity for using thel usual counterweights for supporting the sashes in adjusted position, the sealing lip or `flange being further adapted to wear a channel or seat in the window sash for assuring a weather-proof joint.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a parting strip of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eiiicient and reliable in use, which will be neat and attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured and installed in position in a conventional window frame at low oost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a study of the following speciiication, taken in .connection with the Aaccompanying drawings wherein like characters ot reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein a Figure 1 is a view-principally in elevation and partly in vertical section of a window frame equipped with parting strips in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the window frame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view in perspective of the end portions of the parting strips and the expander therefor, Vthe same being shown separated.
Figure t Yis a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4.-4 of Figure l.
Figure is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of F igure 2.
Figure 6' is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the parting strip.
Figure 7 is .a fragmentary detail view in perspective showing one end portion of the slidable cover or shield which is mounted on the lower window sash and is movable therewith on the parting strips.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral l designates generally a window frame which includes the vertical side members 2, the sill `3 and the upper cross member 4L. Upper and lower window sashes 5 and 6, respectively are mounted for vertical sliding movement in the frame l and guide strips 7 are mounted on the frame and engageable with .the outer sides of the sashes 5 and 6 in the usual manner. The inner sides of the vertical members 2 and theupper cross member Li of the frame l are, as usual, provided with the grooves 8 which communicate with each other. The grooves 8 are, of course, disposed between the vertical planes of the upper and lower window sashes and 6.
Mounted in the grooves 8 of the window :trame l are the parting strips constituting this invention, the upper and lower sections 9 and 10 being mounted in the vertical side members 2 of the window frame and the sections 11 being mounted in the upper cross member 4 of the window frame. As lbest seen in Figure 2 of the drawings, the upper and lower sections 9 and l0 are disposed reversely with respect toeach other for operative engagement with the upper and lower window sashes 5 and 6y in a manner which will be presently set forth.
As all of the sections are identical in construction a detailed description of one will sullice for all.
The parting strip comprises a strip of resilient metal which is bent upon itself longitudinally in a. manner to provide the side walls 12 and 13 which are connected integrally with each other at their outer longitudinal edges by a connecting wall 1a, which, in turn, is bent to provide a substantiallyU.n shaped channel 15 having a side wall 16 which is spaced from the side wall 12 of the parting strip and further having a side wall 16 disposed closely adjacent the side wall 13 of the parting strip. The outer portions ofthe walls 13 and 17 of the parting strip are curved laterally in a manner to provide a sealing lip or flange 18 for rictional engagement with the adjacent side of a windowV sash. After continued use the sealing lip or flange 18 will Wear a groove or seat 19 in the window sash and in this manner a weatherproof joint is provided. When the window sash is placed in the frame the walls 13 and 17 and the sealing lip or flange 18 are sprung toward the wall 16- of the channel 15 and in this manner the sealing lip or llange 18 is caused to exert a continuous pressure against the window sash.
The free longitudinal edges of the walls 12 and 13 of the parting strip are provided with integral inturned flanges 2() with which is engageable a resilient expander which is designated generallyby the reference numeral`22, (see Figure 3) and which is disposed longitudinally between the walls 12 and 13.V The expander 22 comprises a longitudinally extending arcuate intermediate portion 23 and the flat longitudinal marginal portions 2e' which are adapted for engagement on the inner sides of the flanges 20;
i the intermediate arcuate portion 23 oi the err-- pander 22 by the shoulder provided by the enlargement 26. As will be apparent, when the arcuate intermediate portion 23 of the epander 22 is Vforced toward the inner or bottom wall of the groove 8 of the window frame 1 the flat marginal portions will be forced away from each other and in this nian ner the parting strip is expanded laterally in the groove 8 to provide a weather-prooi' joint.
A This action takes place just before the head 27 of the screw 25 engages the inner or bottom wall or" the channel 15 or" the parting strip.
Mounted vertically on the side portions of the lower sash 6 is a cover or shield 29 having formed integrally thereon a right angularly disposed flange 30 which is apertured for the passage ot' suitable securing elements for mounting the cover or shield in position on the'window sash 6. An integral flange 31 extends in an opposite direction from the free longitudinal edge of the cover or shield 29 for engagement with the free side of the parting strip sections.
As will be seen, the construction and arrangement ot the parting strip is such that when the groove 8 of the window irame expands or contracts laterally, said expansion yand contraction will. be compensated for through the medium of the resilient expander 22which is maintained under 'tension at all times and will move the walls l2 and 13 ot the parting strip outwardly should the groove 8 expand laterally and which will permit the walls 12 and 13 to be moved toward each other should the groove 8 contract laterally. ln addition to providing a weather-proof joint, the sealing lip or flange 18 frictionally engages the adjacent sash and supports said sash :in adjusted position without th use of the usual counterweights or the like.
lt is believed that the many advantages of a. parting strip constructed, in accordance with this invention will be readily uncerstood, and although the preferred embodiment oi the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
