Description

Patented Dec. 29, 1931 I UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE EDWIN D. RATTIGAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO P'Y-LUBBO COMPANY INC., PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- sYLvAmA muons rncxme no Drawing. Application am June 20, 1928. serial No. 237,040.
The principal object of the present incant producing a mass which may be called vention is to provide packing which will a mioth emulsion.
Withstand high temperatures and pressures, will resist hot water and vapor and will ;23 :3 la s i gfid 21: 6:56! Iglcorpomted 5 not be deleteriously afi'ected by many liquids and vapors which ordinarily attack or dewf RATTIGAN. teriorate fibrous packing.
Generally stated, the invention comprises m fibrous packing having incorporated therein zinc dust and a lubricant. 7
Examples of fibrous packing arebraided or flat packing of cotton, asbestos, hemp, jute and similar fibers all of which as wellas others of equivalent material and structure are commonly referred to as fibrous pacldngs.
Zinc dust is light gray in color and is recovered from flues and the like of furnaces where zinc is melted. It passes ofi as vapor and sublimes and it will not readily melt into a fluid mass. Among its-important qualities in connection with the present invention, reference may be made to the fact that it is in an exceedingly fine state of subdivision, has the property of absorbing lubricant or grease, and acts in the packing to suit the packing to uses and conditions to so which reference has been made and greatly increase its life. I
To further describe the invention it may be said that 50% by weight of zinc dust and lubricant, which may be a mixture of cup 351 grease or cylinder stock and soap thoroughly stirred and if necessary heated and allowed to stand for a period of, for example, two or three weeks, produces a product which a when incorporated with the fibrous material of the packing produces an article embodying features of the invention. During the interval when the admixture is standing there is some evolution of gas or air, and the zinc dust apparently takes up the lubri
