Description

.IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AUGUST STURM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 ROBERTS MANUFAU- TURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRIMMINGS.
Specification formin g part of Letters Patent N0. 183,722, dated October 24, 1876; application filed September 29, 1876.
T0 all whom z't mag concem:
Be it kuown that I, AUGUST STURM, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented certain new und. useful Improvements in Trimmings, 0f whioh the following is a specifieation My iuventiou relates to that kind of trimming in which the goods a1e ruffled 01 plaited to form ruffling. 'Ihe objeet is to produee inexpensively and readily ornaxnental ruffling whieh shall present all the appearanee ot' being embroidered.
T0 effect this result I lay 011 the goods when p1ain, 0r before being ruffled, one er more threads, which extend lougitudinally of the fabric in the line of the ruffling, am]. then rufl'tle 01 plait tl1e fabric. The latter operation breaks the continuity of the thread 0r threads prelixninarily laid 0n and gives the eompleted ruffle the appeamance 0f being elaborately embroidered. The thread or threads may be attached to 01 united with the fabric in any desired manner. I prefer t0 lay them on in irregular or wavy lines, am]. unite thern with the fabrie by laying them 0n oue faee thereof and securing them in plane by sizing, 0r in a.ny other desired way. The exposed 01 outer face of the ruffle is that opposite t0 that face of the plain fabric, 0x1 which the thread is 1aid, so that when the goods are made up, the thread has the appearance of being embroidered 01 interlaeed with the fabric. Orape, lisse, tarlatan, 01 any other suitable light material, may be used as the body fabric for the ruffle. The auxiliary threads may be 0f any desired 00101 and kind.
In the aecomp-anying drawing, Fig. 1 is a view 0f a plain unruffled. pieee 0f goods, A, with threads B laid thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of ruffling made from such a piece 0f goods as shown in Fig. l.
Having thus deseribed n1y invention, and the manner in which the smne is 0r may be camried into effect, what I claim, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The method described, of makiug ernamental ruffiing, consisting in first unitiug with the plain fabric one 01 more threads laid 011, and extending longitudinally of the portiun of the fabrie to be ruffled, and then ruffling er plaiting said fabric, as sei: forth.
2. As a new artiele 0t' manufacture, the ruffling made by the method comprehended in tl1e foregoing claim, substantially as set forth.
111 testimony whereof I have hereunto sigued my nenne this 27th day of September,
AUGUST STURM. Witnesses:
R. W. ROBERTS, S. VAN ZANDT.
