, presses whereby a printin-g mechanismmay sheets from the web, and in dottedlinesar ranged to print short distances apart on the speed driving connection with theprinting g the two selected small change'form'cylinders ting mechanism.
be employed to print at different distances apart upon a travelingweb,according to'the length of the sheets which are to be'cut'from the printed web, said printing"mechanism being combined with a con'stantrspeed sheet cutting mechanism and a change speed feed ing mechanism therefor whereby sheets of different lengths may be cut from the printed web;
My invention further comprises a machine of the above'character in which a common means is provided for driving'the several mechanisms at predetermined speeds." Myinvention more "particularly comprises a common driving means, in the present in stance an electric motor, having a change mechanism, a constant speed driving connection with the cutting mechanism and a change speed driving connection 'withthe printed web feeding mechanism for the cut:
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figs. 1 and 1 represent in diagrama side elevationiof the machine, the mechanisms;
being represented in fiilldines arranged to print considerable distances apart *on the traveling web and to cut relatively longtraveling web and to cut relatively short sheetstherefrom;
- Fig. 2 represents a detail side view of the 1 change speed drive for the printing mechanism when the small change form cylinders (shown in dotted lines in FigQl) are used for printing relatively short distances apart on the traveling web, and r Fig. 3' represents a detail side View of the change speed drive for the printed web feeding mechanism for the cutting. mechanism: when relatively short sheets 'are to becut from the printed web.
The multicolor web is represented as awhole by the sheet printing mechanism 7 1930. Serial in. 462,772.
cutting mechanismby SC, the web feedmg mechanism therefor by i W-F' and the sheet folding mechanism by S-F The printing mechanism herein illustrated action with two selected change form cylin? ders. The impression cylinder 'l'is shown in full lines ascoactingwith two largechange form cylinders denoted by 3,4and in dotted lines as coacting with the'two selected small change'form cylinders 5, 6. The impression cylinder 2 is shown in full lines ascoacting" with two selected large change form 'cylinders 7 8 and in dotted lines'ascoacting with ing the printing mechanismis as follows: I An electric motor 11has its shaft '12 provided with a gear 13 which meshes with a] gear 14 fast on a longitudinal shaft 15, one
endof which is provided with a bevel gear 16 which meshes with a bevel gear 17 This bevel gear 17 isprovided with a gear .18 which-meshes with agear 19,*the shaft 20 of which is mounted in a rockingsupport 21.:
One of a selected groupof change gears of different diametersis mounted'on the shaft 20. A change gear22 is used when the large change form cylinders, shown in Fig. 1 are m use and a, change gear 23 is usedwhere the I small change form cylinders shown dotted '7 lines in said figure are in use. i
Either the change gear .22 or the change gear 23, as the. case'may be, meshes'with the gear 24 of a train of gears 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29,
the axis of the gear 27 to keep it at alltimes justable around the axis of the gear 27 to The means which I havel shown for driv- V the gear 28 being bodily adjustable around keep it at all times in mesh with the gear -v of the impression cylinder 2.
It will be understood that thetwo selected drawings a sheet ing mechanism the printed web-is led to the change speed feeding mechanism for the constant speed cutting mechanism, which mechmsm to the folding mechanism, which means anisms will be immediately described.
The mechanism for. cutting the printed sheets of greater'jor lesser length from the Web is herein shown as comprising a rotary cutter 33 arranged to coact every'revolution with-a stationary cutter 34 to sever asheetof a. predetermined length fed therethrough. The rotary cutter 331is shown as driven at a constantspeed, as follows: a 7-.
The shaft 15 which is driven-fromthe "eelectric'motor 11 through the gearsiltland 14is shown as provided at one end with a bevel gear" 35 which meshes withv a bevel gear'36'on the lower end of a vertical shaft- 37,the upper end of which shaft is provided with a bevel gear 38 whichmeshes "with a bevel gear 39 of a cross shaft 40. A gear 41 on the shaft drives through an intermediate gear 42 and the gear 43 on the shaft 44 of the rotary cutter.
Thechange speed mechanism forfeeding more or lessof the. printed web through the cutters every revolution of the cutters for cutting longer or shorter sheets is herein shown as comprising the following elements:
A gear 45 on the shaft '40. drives through the intermediate gears 46, 47 a gear 51 'carried'by a rocking support 48 which maybe secured in different. adjustedpositions by means of a' clamp bolt 49 and elongated slot 50 concentric'with the axis of 'saidrarm.
When a longer sheet is to be cut from the printed web the gear 51 which meshes with the gear 47 is also brought into mesh with a wide faced gear, 57 on the shaft 54. ofa' 'web feed roll .55. This web feed roll drives the web feed drum 56 through the wide faced gear 57 and gear 58'. 1 When a shorter sheet is to be cut. the gears tion to bringth'e gear 51- into mesh with thegear 53. g
Suitable pressure rollers 59 may be employed for holding the web on the feed drum 56,,if so desired. A suitable guide 60 directs the web from the. feed'drum 56 tothe sheet cutting mechanism. r V
I have also shown in the accompanyingfolding mechanism which may consist of the coacting rotary folding cylinders 61, 62, the cylinder 61 being provided with the blade 63 and the cylinder 62 with the folding grippers 64 arranged to coact therewith. Suitable means, not shown herein, may be provided for operating the grippers 64 to deposit the folded sheets on to the delivery point 65.
c This folding mechanism isshown as being drivenat a constant speed from the cutting mechanism through thetrain of gears 66, 67 and 68. .7 v
A suitable means may be. employed for conveying the sheets from the cutting mechais herein shown-as comprising an endless carrier 69 and its coactingpressure rollers 70.
to be printed in four colors on one side thereof, it is to-be understood that it may be printed in one or more colors, as desired.
-' While Ihave shown change form cylinders of two diameters in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that thesechange form cylinders may be of any desired diameter, not necessarily a sub-multiple of the impression cylinders, so that successive printings on. the web may be spaced at any desired distance apart, within reasonable limits, to suit sheets of different lengths to be cut from the'printedweba It is furthermore to be understood that the change speed devices for driving theprint ing mechanism and the web feeding mechanism s'hould correspond to the length of sheets to be'cut from the web. r
While this invention is suitable for handling webs'of' any character it is particularly designed for socalledbag printing where the printed web, which may be of thin or looselywoven material, such as burlap, will have the successive printings thereon, in one or more colors, spaced at different distances 7 apart so that sheets of varying lengths may be cut from the printed web, folded and thereafter made into bags. 7
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein I shown and described, but what I claim is 53 and 57 are moved laterally to bring the i apart, a sheet cutting mechanism, a Web feeding mechanism therefor and a common means having a change speed driving connection with the printing mechanism, av constant speed driving connection with the sheet cuttingmechanism and a change speed drivmg eonnect1on with the web feeding mecha- I11SIII for the sheet cuttmg mechanism.
