Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
GEORGE E. HAYES, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-WARMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,497, dated October 24, 1876; application filed February 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HAYES, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Warmers, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists in the combination of a foot-warming device with a dental or other chair, so hinged or connected thereto (either to the foot-board, adjustable platform, or other part of the chair) that it may be turned down and forward, or otherwise adjusted for an adult, or upward and back for a child, as will be more clearly hereinafter shown.
Dentists who are always at work at the chair, and who have engagements ahead, so as to keep their time fully occupied, often find it inconvenient, in cold weather, to allow patients sufficient time to become warm enough to occupy the chair with comfort or safety.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to afl'ord the means for warming the feet while in the chair, and thereby save time and add to the comfort of the patient. It may also be used in exceedingly warm weather as a refrigerator to temper and tone the air of the room for comfort.
In said drawings I have shown a device well adapted for carrying out my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side'ele vation, showing the foot rest andwarmer turned up and back in the proper position for the use of a child. Fig. 2 is a section through line a; m, Fig. 3 5 and Fig. 3 is a front view of the footrest and warming device.
It consists of a hollow vessel, A, combined with a foot-rest, B, or its equivalent. 0 is an opening through which hot water may be introduced. It is closed by a screw stopper or plug, B being the foot-rest when in the. position shown in Fig. 1, and B the foot-rest when in the position shown in Fig. 2. B represents a platform, which is a part of B B and moves with it when turned up or down.
When adapted for receiving a solid heating material, the opening maybe either at the end, as shown by the dotted lines 0, Fig. 2, or at one of the sides, so as to be opened or closed by a door; or it may be otherwise arranged so as to be conveniently fastened to the. lower or under part of the foot-rest, so as to be easily put on or taken off. E represents a small opening and a plug for closing it, for allowing the liquid (when used) to run out when required, the foot-rest being first placed in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The foot-step is jointed to the platform F, or other equivalent part of a dental or other chair, for the purpose above specified. This invention is also well adapted for invalid or barbers chairs.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a foot-warming apparatus with the adjustable foot-rest of a dental chair, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
GEO. E. HAYES.
