Description
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
WOLOOT'I O. DANIELS, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-BUTTONS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,449, dated October 17, 1876; application filed March 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WOLGOTT O. DANIELS, of Westfield, in the State of Massachusetts,
have invented a new and useful Improved Button for Whips; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the leters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a button for ornamenting whips, which combines theordinary tapered ferrule with a woven or plaited raised button; and it consists of a tapered ferrule of any desired pattern and ornamentation, upon the middle portion of which is a plaited raised button, wrought around the outside, leaving the ends of the ferrule exposed.
Figure I is a perspective view of my invention; and Fig. II is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the drawing, A represents a tapered me tallic ferrule, the interior of which should be made to fit the exterior of the whip to which it is applied, and the ends of this ferrule may be ornamented by a bead, c, raised upon the exterior surface of each end, and with either a plain surface or a larger head between the two end beads, or instead of the end beads any other desired ornamentation may be used.
If a large middle head is made between the two end heads, I work a raised part, B, of thread or of similar material usually employed in covering whips; and I accomplish this by interlacing, weaving, 0r plaiting the threads with a needle, to give this part of the button a braided or plaited appearance, the large bead serving to give form to the part B, and,
or similar material, to give the desired raised or convex form in cross section, and then work upon this the interlaced or plaited work with the needle, as before. When this is done the part B may be painted or colored as desired, and may have any preparation of waterproof applied to protect it, and when finished the contrast in color between the part B and the exposed ends of the ferrule A makes a very pleasingappearance, and gives the whip a very desirable ornamentation, and renders it much stronger and more durable. A knob or end button of any desired form and ornamentation may be secured to the butt of the whip, at the end of the ferrule A, when the latter is applied to the butt','which will rather increase its ornamental appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- An improved whip-button, consisting of the ferrule A, having the part B plaited or wrought upon its exterior surface, the said parts being combined substantially as described.
, WOLUOTT O. DANIELS.
