Application ined January 19,1929." serial No, 333,571; v
This invention relates to a portablesand'- ing and polishing device and more 'particularly to means for coolingthe driving motor and rubbing'element of said device, and is an improvement upon the invention shown and described in our vco-pendingL applica` tion, Serial No. 287,958, led June 25, 1928. An object of the'invention is to provide means forming a part of the device for causing a circulation of air through the device to cool the motor and `thel rubbing element, the cooling of the'latter causing a.A dissipation of the heat created through the frictional engagementy of the -rotat1ng rubbing element with the surface being operated upon. VCooling is highly desirable for the reason that one of the important uses of the invention is that vwhich relates to the'inishing of automobile bodies such' 'as operationsv of sanding andk polishing the bodies. lObviously, a high degree of heat is created through the frictional Contact of the rubbing element and surface being treated and itlis' desirable to dissipate this heat as fara's possible to preserve the finish.
The invention'w stood from the following descriptionwhen taken in connection with the accompimying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearlydened in the claims at the close of this specification;
"In said drawings: I f l Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the vdevice and a portion of its supporting means, illustrating the manner in which it maybe manipulated. Fig. 2 is a'longitudinal section ofthe device. f v l, Before explainingin detail the present invention, and the method or modeL of operation embodied therein, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details o f construction and arrangement offparts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the 'invention is capable of other 'embodiments' and of being practised or carried out in various ways. Also it isto be understood that the phrase- Vology orterminolog'y employed herein is'for the purpose of description and not of `limiillfbe more fully under-Y tation and it is not intended t limit thev invention beyond the terms of the several claims hereto appended or the requirements of the pr1or'art'f.*Y Y ReferringY now to the drawings, 10y des-1 ignates an electric motor, preferably of the high cycle type, having a drive shaftilland la casing or housing 12. 4 `The shaft 11 is mountedY in bearings 13, 13. positione'din the ends or-heads 14 and 15 of thel motor easing.- The head 111 is integral vwith the cas. ing whereas the head 15 is detachable and may beheld in place by cap screws-15a. Secured, as by cap screws 16, to opposite ends lof the motor casing are handle-carrying heads17 and 18 having co-aXia-l stems 19 and 20 which extend in oppositedirections from said motor casing, the ends ofthe stems being enclosed by -Vhollow' handles 21 and 22 respectively. Thehead 17 isprovided with a plurality of apertures 17a for a 'purpose to be described hereinafter. 1 f a The handlel 21 is provided with a removable apertured cap 23 and the lhandle 22 with a removable cap 24. A switch box or easing '2(5'is preferably mounted upon the handle 21 vand a flexible electric conductor 26 is con- -nected' with saidy switch boxfor supplying current tothe motor.
`Rotatably mounted, as by ball bearings 27,
-27 upon the stems 19 and -20 is a hollowcylinder 28 having at y one end -a removable head '29`vsecured tothe cylinder as vby means of Mounted upon andy fixedY the motor shaft A 11', and positioned Ywithin the motor housin or 'casing 12 adjacent the-head 15is a. centri v yugal fan 'which is driven Vby thernotor. y
- The endfof' the motor shaft beyondv the'headv 15 is provided'with a gear 34 in mesh with a pinion 35 which in turn engages an annular toothed rack or ring gear 36 carried by the head 29.
From the' foregoing it will be seen that the hollow cylinder`28, head 29, andy rubbing element 311 rotate relatively to the motor and its housing as well as the hollow handles 21 and 2 2 and their'steins l9 and 20. These handles are provided with flanges ore*ii-largements 37- liaving'exteriial annular grooves to receive' the ends of a bail 38 connecting said handles and extending about theV annular rubbingelement. The bail 38, which is preferably of substantially semi-circular form', is' engaged" casing head 14,- between the coils and armature of them motor, to the fan, which fan forces the air radially outward through a series of annularly ,arrangedy apertures43 into the space 80, from whence it escapes through a series of orifices 44 in the cylinder 28 to the rubbing element 31. Y
v*The centrifugal fan which sucks in the ai-r forces itoutY radially at high velocity anditescapes from between the felt rings ,of the rubbing element, tlieair following the path shown by the arrows in Fig.- 2 An additional escape for anyV excess air drawnin by the fan is provided by the apertures 286 and 280 in the cylinder 28. Y y i n j From the'foregoingitwillbe seen that air for cooling the motor coils and the rubbing element, Ythe latter cooling serving todissi ,pate the heat created through the frictional contact of the rubbing element with the surface treated, is-drawn or sucked fin, in an axial direction, through one of the handles of the device and through the motor, and is -forcedout ofthe casing in a radial direction into the space between the/ motor casing and thecyflindei1 from whence'it escapesthrough the rubbing'element as above deseribed.- ,Whatwe claim is: i t 2 A portable sanding and polishing d'evice .includ-ing, in combination, a motor, a
casingfor the motor having a liead'prbvided Vwith apertures,` a Y cylinder surroundingsaid casing and vmounted for Vrotation relative thereto, said casing vhaving' peripheral apertures therein, driving connections between the motor andv cylinder for rotating the: lat- -tei",-a rubbing; elementcarried by thecylin`der,- A handles connected with said device A'whereby it may be bodily manipulated, 'and means :for drawing airinto the device through one of said handles and through the apertures in said cylinder and casing head for cooling the motor and for forcing it out throughV said rubbing element to cool the same.
2.- A portable sanding and polishing device'irincluding in` combination', a motor, a casing for the motor having a head provided with apertures, a cylinder surrounding said easing Vmi ,musea forrsa1-aon` relieave thereto, said f casing-having peripheral apertures therein, driving' connections between the'mot'or'andeylider for rotating the cylinder, a rubbing element carried by the cylinderi, handles conneeted with said device whereby itniay be bodily manipulated,-l and means for drawing air into the device through theapertu'res inV said cylinder and Vcasing yfor*cooling` the notor andlfor forcing it out through saidY rubbing element tolcool thesame.
