Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL R. PRATT, 0E RRooKLYmNEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN` NuT-LocKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 183,324, dated October 17, 1876; application tiled July 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, DANIEL R. PRATT, of the city of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in what l denominate Duplex-Spring Nuts 5 and l do hereby declare the following to be a true and correct description of' the construction and operation of the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawings, making` part and parcel ot' thisrmy specification.
The nature of my .invention relates to the construction oi' a nut and follower in one solid piece ct'inetal, combined with a cup 'or case to hold a spring, and the notches and clamping projections, which are made to correspond, all ot' which will be more clearly hereinafter described.
Figure 1 showsthe nut and follower, cup or spring-case, and the spring detached. Fig. 2 is a face view, showing the nut with its follower, the cup or spring-case, and mode of securing the latter tothe nut and follower. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on line .c Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on lille z z of Fig. 3.
In said drawings, U and C represent the nuts connected with a iiunge or follower, upon the circumference of which the projections or lugs d d are formed, which, when placed in position upon and within the cup A, fit into the projecting spaces ot' said cup at d d. The cup A has an interior and upwardly-projecting ilange, e, formed around the space through described.
is inserted and the nut with its follower placed upon the same, as seen in Figs. 2 and 5. The
.ears d d are bent inward upon the nut-follower, holding all of the said separate parts together, and are ready to be applied to any screw-bolt adapted to receive such nut. The strain upon the bolt is thus relieved by reason ofthe inclosed spring, and avoids the rattling noise attendant upon y'the/common construction of nuts and bolts. The several devicesto wit, the cup, spring, and nut-all turn together when the wrench is applied to the nut, avoiding the crushing or grinding ofthe spring.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The nut and -follower C, cast in one piece, with the depressions c c formed ywithin or upon tlie side face of the nut, and with the projections d d upon the periphery of the follower, n combination with the cup A, having formed upon and within it the lugs or ears d" d", in the manner and for the purpose herein DANIEL R. PRATT. Witnesses:
