Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JAMES MCGOY, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MASONIC BADGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,318, dated October 17, 1876.; application led March 25, 1876.
To' all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES MCGOY, of YpsiY lanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Masonic Badge, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanyingdrawing, Figure l represents a rear view ot' my improved masonic badge, and Fig. 2 a side elevation ot' the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved masonic badge, that may be readily applied to the coat and adjusted to indicate the special degree of the wearer, or, when applied to a lodge-jewel, the degree on which the lodge is working.
The invention consists of a masonic badge in which the legs of the compasses are pivoted to be carried above or below the square. It consists also of a badge provided with a springfaoting-pin, that slides by a thumb-piece in guide projections at the back, to be readily attached to the coat.
In the drawing, A represents a badge of the well-known masonic emblems arranged on a letter G, or directly on the fastening device of the same. The legs A of the Compasses are pivoted instead of being rig-idly riveted,
as in the common badge, and may thereby be brought above-or below the firmly-riveted square, so as to indicate in a convenient m'anto a lod ge-jewel, the degree on which the lodge is working. t
The-badge A is applied by a fastening-pin, C, pivoted at both ends to the coat, vest, or shirt, the pin slidingin perforated guide-lugs or projections B at the back of the badge. A thumb-piece, D, at the upper part of the pin C allows the forcing down ot' the lower pin-point,
while a spiral spring, E, between the thumbpiece and lower projection, forces the p in in upward direction, to enter the fabric above the badge as soon as the'thumbpiece is released. The spiral pin produces a reliable double fast-- ening of the badge in perfectly secure manner,'so as to avoid the loss of the same, and admit also its quick detaching, by simply pressing on the thumb-piece and releasing the pin ends.
Having thus described lny invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- A masonic badge, consisting of a back plate, to which are rigidly secured a square and compass, the latter provided with the pivoted legs c, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.` v
JAMES MCOOY.
