This invention relates to a shaving machine for semi-cylindrical stereotype printing plates. The object of the invention is to provide a machine capable of shaving twice as many plates as usual and using only the same power and occupying very little more space.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying two sheets of drawings in which Fig. l is a plan view of an auto shaver showin two shaving arches and two cooling and delivery devices side by side in accordance with this invention;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to the class of machines known as auto shavers and used in connection with the manufacture of stereotype printing plates which are used on newspaper printing presses. These plates are cast on a machine known in the trade as the Junior auto plate, in which the riser is separated from the plates during its delivery therefrom. The plates are then put into the auto shaver which shaves the ribs formed on the inside of the plate so as to give it uniform thickness and then automatically passes it through the cooling and drying sections of the machine.
In most of the large newspaper oflices, there are usually found a sufficient number of Junior auto plate machines, each machine necessitating two or more auto shavers. Since the shaving of the plate forms the major part of the work accomplished by the machine and since the plate that is being shaved is semi-cylindrical in shape, it will be seen that the shaving elements of the machine are in use only one-half of the actual time. In order to complete its cycle, the shaving elements must travel through onehalf of its cycle without doing any useful work.
My present invention consists in providing two knife carrying shaving bars, two shaving arches, and two separate and distinct paths along which the plates may advance from the shaving position to the cooling position and thence to the drying and delivery position. By so arranging the timing devices that control the entrance of the plate into the shaving arch, the plates are admitted alternately into the two shaving arches about degrees of a cycle apart, it will be seen that the machine will perform useful work through both halves of its cycle instead of remaining idle through one-half of the time, as has been the case heretofore.
The machine is shown as provided with a frame 10. Mounted on said frame is a motor 11 having a pulley 12 which through belt 13 drives pulley 14 on main driving shaft 15. The shaft 15 is supported in suitable bearings in frame 10. Secured to shaft 15 are two worms 16 and 17 4 (see Fig. 8) which mesh with two worm wheels 18 and 19 fastened on knife bars 20 and 21. These knife bars 20 and 21 are provided with suitable bearings in frame 10. Each knife bar is provided with a shaving knife 22 and 23.
A stereotype plate after being cast is placed on supports 22 or 23 after which it passes down an inclined track to the shaving arches 24 or 25. The plate P is supported in said arches 24 and 25 on rollers R which are carried by a suitable spring mechanism 26 which raises the rollers with its plate and thus locks the plate in said arch. It is during this time when the plate is locked in the arch that the shavingknife bar with its shaving knife revolves and shaves the ribs formed on the inside of the plate. The plate after being shaved is lowered and automatically passes out of the arch onto a cooling device W.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that as a single plate passes through the arch to be shaved, during one half of the revolution of the shaving knife bar, no useful work is performed. But by providing two shaving knife bars so related that when one is pointing upwardly, the other is pointing in the opposite direction (as shown in Fig. 3) double the amount of work can be accomplished.

knife bar is performing the shaving operation on the plate above 1t. By so arranging the timing devices that control the entrance of the plate into the shaving arch, the plates are admitted alternately into the two'shaving arches about 180 degrees ofa cycle apart, the machine is performlng useful work through both halves of its cycle instead of remaining idle one-half of the time.
