Each of a plurality of fastenerelements 9, for example eyes, has its base portion 10 arranged between the plies of the top flap 3 and its engaging portion or loop 11 passing through one of the slits 7 and extending beyond the ex osed edge 8 of the top flap. Preferably tie distance between the slits 7 and the longitudinal fold 2 is less than the length of the fastener elements, so that the fastener elements cannot be displaced from the slits while the strip is folded, it being possible to remove the fastener elements only y turning back one of the flaps. 1

The fastener tape may be sold, handled o transported in the condition above described and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings,

without stitching, and the flaps 3 and 4 may be stitched together at any time, for example,

when the tape is applied to a garment, and this stitching may or may not be utilized to reenforce the attachment of the fastener elements to the tape. It will be observed that the fastener elements will be prevented from pulling out of the tape when the flaps are stitched together, by contact of the base portions 10 with the fabric at opposite sides of the slits 7 and by the complete enclosing of the base portions between the plies of the flap. 1

In many instances, it will be desirable to stitch the flaps together as a step in the manufacture of the tape, for example, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, where a line of stitching 12 extends longitudinally of the strip and through both flaps so as to connect the flaps together. Also, preferably,

this line of stitching is disposed between the slits 7 and the exposed edge 8 of the top flap, and stitching may include lateral stitches 13 passing over or encircling the base portions 10.

The fastener elements may be inserted in the lower flap 4 instead of the upper flap, if desired, for example, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. Here the turned in or inner ply 6 is provided with a plurality of slits 14 through each of which passes the engaging portion 11 of a fastener element, the base portion 10 of which is disposed between the plies of the flap 4. The slits 14: are so arranged as to be covered by the top flap 3 when the flaps are arranged in contacting and overlapping relation. This form of fastener tape may or may not be stitched in the same manner as the tape shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.

In some instances it may be desirable to form the tape so as to cover the stitches which secure the flaps together, and for this purpose the construction shown in Figures 5 and 6 may be provided. In this form of the invention, the top flap 15 corresponding to the flap 3 of the construction shown in Figures 1. to 2 is initially made wider than the flap 3 and the portion constituting the extra width may be returned upon the flap as at 16 after the line of stitching l7 corresponding to the stitches 12. of Figure 2 has been formed. In this type of fastener tape, the slits 18 to receive the fastener elements are disposed adjacent the exposed edge of the flap formed by the fold resulting from turning back the portion 16. The turned back I is fold-ed exactly as in the case of the eye fastener tape, and the slits 7 for receiving the fastener elements are disposed in the same manner in the flaps. The base portions 20 of the hooks are arranged between the plies ofthe flaps, as are the base portions 10 of the eyes, while the bills 21 of the hooks pass through the slits 7 and overlie the top flap 3 as clearly shown in the drawings. The hook fastener elements may or may not be stitched to the strip, as desired; but when they are secured to the strip by stitching, I may utilize a line 23 of stitches running longitudinally ofv the strip which includes lateral stitches 2 encircling the base portions 20 of the hooks.

It will be understood by'those skilled in i the art that the flaps of the strip may .be formed with more or less pliesor thicknesses of material, and only one of the flaps, that is the flap carrying the fastener elements, need have more than one pl It will be observed that the invention enables a tape of great strength to be obtained with a relatively small amount of material,

and with no more stitching than is commonly used in fastener tape of the same general character. The engagement of the base portions of the fastener elements with the material in the sides of the slits, greatly reenforces the attachment of the fastener .ele-

ment to the strip. Furthermore, the arrangement of the slits and the stitching prevents ravelling or distortion of the fabric at the edges of the slits. v

As shown the drawings, the fastener elements, i. e., the hooks and eyes, are made of wire, .and the base portions thereof are formed of loops of a certain shape; but while these are the now preferred forms of the fastenerelements, other suitable types -of fastener elements may be utilized.

While I have shown and described the invention as embodied-in certain details of construction, it will -be understood that this .is primarily for the purpose of illustrating the principles of the invention and that many modifications and changes may be made in the details of the fastener strip, in the form of the fastener elements and in the manner of attaching the fastener elements to the strip, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Therefore, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: v

1. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps, the edge portion of one of said flaps being turned under to form two plies, said turned under portion having slits disposed between the fold formed by said turned under edge portion and the edge thereof to receive fastener elements, and fastener elements each having a base arranged between two of said plies and an engaging portion projecting through one of said slits and exposed.

2. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps one of which has a plurality of plies including an outer ply and an inner ply, the inner ply having slits to receive fastener elements, and fastener elements each having a base arranged between two of said plies and an engaglng portion projecting through one of said slits beyond the exposed edge of the corresponding flap, said slits being disposed between the exposed edge of the flap and said longitudinal, fold so as to be covered or concealed by the flap.

3. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps one of which has a plurality of plies, one of the inner plies having slits therethrough to receive the engaging portions of fastener elements, and fastener elements each having a base arranged between two of said plies and an engaging portion projecting through one of said slits and exposed, said slits being covered or concealed by the overlapping portions of the flaps.

4. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps one of which has a plurality of plies including an outer ply and an inner ply, the inner ply having slits therethrough to receir e the engaging portions of fastener elements, and fastener elements each having a base arranged between two of said plies and an engaging portion projecting through one of said slits and beyond the exposed edge of the corresponding flap, said slits being disposed. between said exposed edge of said flap and said longitudinal fold.

5. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps one of which has a plu-' rality of plies including an outer ply and an inner ply, the inner ply having slits therethrough to receive the'engaging portions of fastener elements, and fastener elements each having a base arranged between two of said plies and an engaging I portion projecting through one of said slitsand lying exposed upon the adjacent side of the other flap for engagement with complemental fastener elements.

6. Fastener tape comprising a single strip of fabric folded longitudinally to form two overlapping flaps the edge portionof one of said flaps being turned under to form two plies, said turned under portion having slits therethrough to receive the engaging portions of fastener elements, and a fastener element having a base arranged between said two plies and anengaging portion projecting through one of saidslits and lying exposed upon the adjacent side of the other flap for engagement with complemental fastener elements.
