less grinding mechanism, in proper relation to the grinding throat or zone thereof.
On the upper part of the base 1, a holding hopper l for a supply of unfinished tappets or the like to be operated on, is fixedly supported, andsuch hopper is provided with an oscillatory selector plate or member 5 adapted to lift unfinished pieces of work from the hopper and place the same in serial order on an inclined track 6,- down which they will slide by gravity and be singly engaged and fed by the automatic feeding mechanisms hereinafter described in detail. The construction and arrangement of the selector plate or'member 5 is adapted to operate in a manner similar to the selector plate described in the aforesaid Danly Patent No. 1,725,444, and issuch that in case headed tappets orthe like are to be selected, the same will be selected and placed on the track 6 with their headed portions in rearward positions thereon.
Adjacent to the mid-length of the track 6 a revoluble disk 7 is arranged, and provided with a series of radial blades 7 on its perimeter, the blades being adapted to engage the pieces of work moving down the inclined track 6 and retard an undue rapidity of descent of the pieces of work and insure a further descent of each piece in a single and successive order. Rotation .of the disk 7 is attained by operative connection thereof with a suitable power source, preferably the means set forth in my application for Patent SerialNo.j425,172, filed February 1, 1930.
In adjacent and offset relation to the lower end of the track 6, a receiving downspout or boot 8 is fixedly supported on the base 1, and
atransfer means is located between the lower end of the track 6 and the upper and receiving end of the downspout 8, with said transfer means involving a construction and arrangement as follows:
A fixed guide frame 9 is arranged between the lower end of the track 6 and the upper end of the downspout 8, to provide a guidewayfor a transversely reciprocating slide or carrier 10, formed with a receiving notch or recess 10 for the reception of and engage- I ment with the shank portion of a piece of work lowermost on the track 6.- Vith the movement of the slide or carrier 10in one direction the piece of work in the notch 10 will be carried from the lower end of the track 6 to a point over the downspout 8 intowhich it is discharged by a knock out blade 11 pivoted at 11 011 the uide frame 9 and provided with'a projecting ug 12 with which an adjustable stem or tappet 13 on the slide 10 has operative contact as said slide or carrier nears the end of its stroke towardsthe downspout, to effect a movement of the blade 11 and discharge the piece of work from the notch 10 into the downspout 8. V
resets;
Mounted on the frame extension 2 of the main base 1 and in receiving relation with the downspout 8, is an endless carrier 17 the end carrying sheaves 17 of which are journalled on said frame extension 2.
The upper stretch of the endless carrier 17 has preferably a downward inclination as shown, with a;view to an easy transfer of pieces of work to the next unit of the present feeding mechanism. While the travel of the endless carrier 17 is preferably attained by a shaft connection '18 of the universaltype forming the operative connection between a carrying sheave 17' of said carrier and a convenien power shaft.
In adjacent relation to the delivery end of the endless carrier 17, a horizontal trough shaped receiving platform 19 is movably mounted on the aforesaid frame extension 2 by a plurality of radius links 20, so as to be capable of limited vertical movement in actual use. The platform 19 is adapted to receive from the aforesaid endless carrier 17, a piece of unfinished work, such as the headed tappet shown, which is properly positioned in the platform by stop abutment of the head of the tappet against the end of the same, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7.
In the construction shown, the piece of unfinished work in the Vale of the platform 19 is carried and deposited between the grinding wheel 21 and feeding wheel 21 of an associated centerless grinding mechanism by means as follows:
A carrier 22, of the. elongated bar type shown,is arranged in operative relation to the receiving platform 19 aforesaid, and receives longitudinal reciprocation'towards and from the-grinding throat of the grinding mechanism above referred to, by operative connection to one end of a rock arm 23, forming a part of an automatic. driving and control mechanism hereinafter described, and at its other end the carrier 22 is carried a pair of work grasping jaws 22, 22 preferably of the detail construction hereinafter described.
The under face of said carrier or bar 22, has sliding support intermediate its length on a bearing roller 24 journalled on the extension or bracket 2 of the main base 1. And with a view to a limited rising and falling movement of the jaw carrying end of the carrier or bar-22, in the actual operation of the mecha effecting the loperations ofsthe different mechanisms ofthepresent construction in proper and successive order, is similar to that descr bed and claimed in another apphcatlon for. patent SGIlCtl' No. 425,172, filed February 1,1930, and comprises a construction and arran ement of parts as follows:
An endless screw haft 36 is journalled longitudinally in the main base land receives constant rotation through a pulley and belt connection to the power shaft of a motor which may be located within the main base 1; The endless screw or worm part of the shaft 36 has operative engagement with a worm wheel 37 on a transversely arranged shaft 38 that has suitable operative connec tion ith the heretofore described bladed disk 7 associated with the inclined track 6 of the structure;
,In addition said primary shaft 38 has gearing connection 39'withthe carrying hub 40 of the driving element of a clutch 41, with said hub loosely mounted on a secondary shaft 42. The carryinghub 43 of-the driven element of theclutch 41 is mounted in a slidable manner on the secondary shaft 42 aforesaid, and in rotatable ei'igagement therewith. The purpose being to attain revolution of the secondary shaft 42 from the primary shaft 88, only during the clutch engagement between the hubs 40 and 43. i In the construction shown, the above referred to intermittent engagement of the hubs 4O and43, is automatically effected and maintained while a single and complete revolution of the secondary shaft 42 i's'effected, by means as follows: 1
The carrying hub 48 of the driven element of the clutch 41 is provided with a cam pr0- jection 4 preferably arranged ina peripheral channel in the hub as shown, with such cam projection adapted for operative engagement with an end portion of'a looking or abutment bar 45, preferably of the sliding type shown, and so that with an engagement of said cam projection against the end of said bar 45, the carrying hub of the driven clutch element, and of which hub the cam projection is'a fixed part, will be positively moved and held out of clutch engagement until a release of the above described engagement between the cam projection 44 and the abutment bar 45, by'a movement of said bar 45 out of such engagement by automatic means hereinafter described.
lVith an attainment of such disengagement, an associated spring 46 operates to above described, is attained by operative connections of said bar 45 with a reciprocating part of the automatic work ejecting unit of a .centerless grinding mechanism, with such connection preferably comprising a pulling link 47 attached at one end to a convenient part. of said work ejector unit, and at the other end to a rock arm48 on a transverse shaft 49 that is journalled on the main base -1-',- with said shaft 49 carrying a secondary rock ar1n 5O. and link connection 51 with locking or abutment bar 45 aforesaid.
The aforesaid. primary shaft 88 carries in an end outside the main base 1, a wiper arm adapted to engage and operate the oscillatory selector plate 5 of the work holding hopper 4.
The secondary shaft 42 aforesaid carries a crank disk 53 the crank pin of which is connected by a link 54 with a crank arm 55 on a transverse rock shaft 56 journalled in the wall of the main base 1. The end of said rock shaft 56 exterior of the base 1 carries the heretofore described rock arm 23, as the means for imparting reciprocation to the work carrier 22, and the construction is such that the rock arm 23 receives a full forward and a full return stroke in each intermittent action of the control mechanism just described. The operation of the mechanism as a whole, is described in connection with the description of each unit of the present feeding mechanism, and in view .of which a description of the serial operation of the parts is not deemed necessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatl claim as new, is
