IMPROVEMENT IN SCALE-BEAMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,852 dated October 3, 1876; application filed September 9,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD A. RooK, of Ludlow, county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Scale-Beam, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved scale-beam. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to furnish weighing-scales in which the beam and weightstem shall be so constructed that no obstruction will be offered to the eye upon the sides of the beam to prevent the position of the in dieator from being readily seen.
The invention consists in a scale-beam slotted longitudinally to receive the stem of the weight, and in the T-indicator, in combination with the stem of the. weight, and with the slotted beam, as hereinafter fully described.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the pedestal, and B the beam, of aweighing-scale. The beam B is slotted longitudinally, or is made in two parts joined to each other at the ends in such a way as to leave a longitudinal slot between them. The slot in the beam B is made slightly V-shaped, or wider in its lower part than in its upper part, as shown in Fig. 2. G is the weight,
which is attached to the lower end of the stem D. The stem D is made thin so as to pass through and move easily back and forth in the slot of the beam B. Upon the upper end of the stem D is formed a T-indicator, E, the knife-edges of the arms of which rest upon the notched upper edges of the parts of the beam B.
By this construction there is nothing upon the sides of the beam B to obstruct the sight and prevent the operator from readily seeing the exact notch in which the indicator stands.
Upon the indicator E is formed a knob, F, to serve as a handle for convenience in adjusting the weight.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A scale-beam slotted longitudinally to receive the stem D of the weight 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The T-indicator, in combination with the stem D of the weight 0, and with the slotted beam B, substantially as herein shown and described.
