I This application is a continuation in part of my prior application, Serial No. 244,411, filed January 3, 1928, Patent No. 1,7 66,121.
' Small power driven circular saws are now in uite general use. Such saws are ordinari y equipped with a direct connected electric motor, and a handle provided with a trig- "ger for controlling the circuit of themotor. In order to use such saws, they must be supported in the hand anddt is-obvious that due to the weight of such apparatus, as well as I 'w-to the fact that the work must also be held in proper osition with respect to the saw,'the mani u ation of such saws is b simp c. It is accordingly one o the ob ects of my invention to make it possible to utilize so such saws in a more convenient manner.
With the aid of my invention, a portable power driven saw can beconverted in a sunple and inexpensive manner, to provide a device that is similar to a power driven table saw ;yet my frame for accomplishing this resuit can be very easily transported and set up at any desired location. t is accordingly another object of my invention to provide a saw an porting frame that can. be readily so clam or otherwise fastened to a bench or table, and that will guide accurately the relative movement of the saw and the work.
It is still another object of my invention to provide a simple, inexpensive frame by the aid of which the depth or angle of the 'cutcan be readily adjusted; as well as. to makeit possible to incline the plane otthe cut at any desired angle.

Int e resent instance, I show a circular saw devic arrangedto be driven by an electric motor 11, that is supported on the frame forming my invention. The saw is shown at 12; it can be connected by appropriate gearing with the motor-11. The saw mechanismntself, forming no part of the present invention, need, not be described, except to state that a handle or grip 13 is provided for guiding it manually, and'that a trigger 14 on the handle serves to control the motor 11. Electric power is furnished through flexible leads 15. A base plate 16 is also' shown, on.,which the motor and saw are .fastened. 1 i g A. work bench 17 is used upon which the 1 material, such" as lumber, to be sawed is accommodated. To this bench or table is fastened the supporting'frame, by the aid of" which the saw mechanism 11-12 is supported above the table.' Between these Jaws extends one edge of bench 17, as clearlyshown in-Fig. 1, and the jaws are clamped thereto by the aid of a clamping screw 21 that is threaded for example in the lower jaw 20.and has a flat portion 22 for enfi aginggthe lower surface of table 11.

Thus standard 26-27 is made hollow, and in .it there is accommodated a long screw 29. This screw is threaded in a nut 30 that fits into the bore of the standard. This nut has a projecting. pin 31 that passes through a vertical slot 32in standard 26, and rests on I the top edge of the socket 23. It is evident i a series of bolts or screws 34. To provide a that if standard 26-27 be held against rotation in the socket 23, and if nut 30 is adjusted vertically in the standard, the vertical position of the standard will be correspondingly adjusted. The screw 29 is used for the ve1- tical adjustment of the nut. In order to ensure that the screw 29 will be maintained against axial movement with respect to standard 26-27, any desired device can be used. For example, a collar 33 can be fastened to the screw, at its upper end. The upper surface of this collar contacts with the lower surface of the horizontal arm 28, which is fastened to the top of standard 26-27 by good rest for arm 28, the standard 26-27 can be provided with a braced horizontal extension 35. Y
To raise standard 26-27, the screw 25 is first loosened; then by the aid of crank 36 attached to screw 29, this screw is rotated in a direction to unscrew it from nut 30. The collar 33 rises with the screw 29 and pulls the standard up. To lower the standard, screw 29 is rotated in a reverse direction, causing collar 33 to move downward; The weight of standard 26-27 and the mechanism carried thereby causes it to follow the collar 33. The limit of adjustment is apparently that represented by the length of the slot 32.
The saw mech-anism 11-12 is movably supported on arm 28, so that it can be transported thereon alon the length of the arm. Thus for example, i it be desired to cut lumber into pieces in a transverse direction, the portable saw is grasped by handle 13 and moved back and forth on arm 28, and lumber placed on bench17 will be operated upon by the saw.

The guide carriage that is movably supported on arm 28 includes a two part device 3738. Thearm 28, as shown most clearly in Fig. 5, has a wedge-shapedcross section;

a dependin lip 40 that cooperates with a stop 41 fastene to standard 26-27 for limiting the inward movement of the apparatus toward the standard.
The lower ,part also carries a boss42 to which is clamped a cross piece 43. e This piece, carries the saw mechanism. It is so arranged that it can occupy either of two positions; one, such as shown in Fig. 1, whereby plane of saw 12 is parallel to the axis 0 arm 28; and another, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the plane of the saw 12 is at right angles to the axis of arm 28. The two parts 42 and 43 can be dovetailed together in eitlter position; and for this purpose, the lowerface of boss 42 can be provided with a pair of square ribs 44 and 45 intersecting at right an les, arranged to dovetail into corres n g recesses in the plate 43. The details of the structure have now been completely described. A summary of its operation can now be set forth.
After the clamp 18 is in place on the table or' bench 17, the standard 2627 can be slipped into socket 23. The pin 31 will rest on the top surface of the socket. The vertical position of the standard can be adjusted by proper manipulation of handle 36, whereb the depth of the saw cut is determined. A ter this adjustment, the socket 23 is tightened around standard 26 b the aid of clamp screw 25. This latter mode of operation is used when the saw 12 is parallel to the table 17, as shown in Fig. 4. In case inclined saw cuts are needed, the segment 48 can be angularly adjusted with respect to block 43. This is accomplished by first loosening bolt 51 and then tightening it after the adjustment is secured.
It is to be noted that the saw structure 11-12 is supported at a considerable distance below 'arm 28, whereby the weightthereof lends substantial stability to the eiitire device;-'furthermore, the entire saw can be easily removed from the frame by merely unfas'tening screw 51, and the saw canthen be used as an ordinary portable saw.
