IMPROVEMENT IN WHEEL-CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,623, dated September 26, 1876; application filed June 23, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALEs ALDRICH, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to that class of straddle-row cultivators in which the operator walks and guides the plows, arranged in gangs, so as to cultivate both sides of a row of plants at the same time.

My improvement consists in the peculiar structure of the arches which brace the carriage'wheels and support the tongue, whereby I obtain both strength and simplicity, as will be herewith specifically described and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I proceed to describe it, referring throughout to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure represents a perspective view of my improved cultivator.

A A represent the carriage-wheels, which revolve upon the ends of two stub-axles, B. A piece, C, of fiat bar metal, extending upward and rearward, of the shape represented, has its ends formed into loops that encompass the stub-axles just by the wheel-hubs, so as to form bearings in which to turn. A second piece, D, of flat bar metal, bent, as shown, and extending upward and forward, has its ends formed into loops that fit over the inner ends of the stub-axles, and are prevented from slipping 0E by nuts a. The tongue E rests upon the tops of the arches C and D, to

which it is bolted, and the latter are further braced by the fiat metal bars b, which are bolted to the arhes. and in front to the tongue, as represented. F F represent two metal loops, encompassing the stub-axles between the arches, and having their outer ends, which extend to the rear, slotted horizontally, to form bearings, in which the front ends of the plow-beams are pivoted. These bearingloops are clamped adjustably upon the stubaxles by set-screws c.

The plow-beams Gr may be of the shape represented, or of any other form, and are pivotedin the loops F in the usual manner, so as to have free lateral play.

The shovel-standards H, of the shape shown, have their top ends slotted to receive the ends of the beams G, to which they are pivoted at d. The ends of the plow-beams conform in shape to the shovel-standards, and the latter are further secured to the former by break-pins c.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The metal arches C and D, of the shape represented, each clasping, respectively, the inner and outer ends of the stub-axles B, and braced by the tongue E and bars I), the whole united substantially as and for the purpose specified.
