IMPROVEMENT IN MORTISING-CHISELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,610, dated September 26, 1876; application filed February 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. SMITH, of Whitestown, Oneida county, State of New York, have invented a MortisingGhisel, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct a mortising-chisel that it will make a mortise and take its own chips out at the same time, of which the following is a full, clear, and concise description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of my improved mortising-chisel; and Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections thereof on lines E and F, respectively, of Fig. l.
This device is an improvement in that class of chisels which are so constructed that on being withdrawn from a mortise they. clear the same of the core or chips.
The improvement consists in the construction of the throat or channel of the chisel, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, A indicates the shank, and B the throat or channel, of the chisel, into which the core or chips are received as fast as cut out by the lips a a, and wherein they are retained till the chisel is withdrawn from the mortise. The channel B is rectangular in cross-section, in order that its cubical capacity may be as great as practicable; and it is made of gradually-increasing diameter from the bottom upward, to prevent choking or fatcilitate the ascent of the chips in the channel. The front side of the channel is partially cut away, leaving narrower lips b b, which serve to prevent the chips falling forward or out of the channel. The slot or opening in the front side of the channel also facilitates clearing it of chips by means of any suitable tool or instrument.
I am aware of the patent of George Page, granted August 14, 1833, and claim nothing therein shown and described.
I do not claim, broadly, a mortising-chisel having a channel open on its front side but 1 claim- The improved mortising-chisel herein described, having the channel B, made rectangular in cross-section, and of gradually-increasing diameter from the cutting-lips upward, and provided with the lips 12 b on its front side, as shown and described.
