UNITED STATES PATENT QEFICE.
SAMUEL R. RUGKEL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-GATHERERS..
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,607, dated September 26, 1876; application filed June 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. BUCKET., of Kansas City, county of Jackson, and State vof Missouri, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Gatherer, of which the following is a speciication:
VThe nature of 4my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fruitpicker, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my fruitpicker. Fig. 2 is a section of the same immediately above the bag-holder. Fig. 3 shows a moditication of my device. p
A represents the staffer handle of my fruitpicker, the upper end .of which is slotted or forked, as shown, and -has a hand, B, rmly secured to its extreme end. G represents a corrseponding hand, provided with a shank or arm, D, which is passed through and pivoted in the forked end of the handle A. From the end of the arm D extends a Wire or cord, a, by means of which the operator can close the hand 0 against the hand B. The hand C is opened by means of a spring, b, as shown. At the ends of the hands B C are formed cutters d d, so as to out the stems instead of pull- 'ing them, the fruit falling down through the opening between the palms of the hands into the bag E underneath. This bag is held by means ofa hoop, G, which is provided with a plate, h., resting against the stati or handle A, and fastened thereto by a pin, t', passing through the staff and plate and under the hoop, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the staff A, cord a, spring b, aud hands B G, provided with serrated cuttersd d, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. `In combination with the hoop G and staff A, the plateh and pin t', constructed and operatin g substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto afx my signature this 7th day of June, 1876.
SAMUEL R. RUCKEL.
