This invention relates to a machine tool,-
with more particular reference to machines of the planer type, and has for its object to afford a structure that will adequatelytake care of water or other cooling medium in such a wa as to revent its access to vital parts of t e machine and also prevent collecting of the cooling medium upon the floor surrounding the machine.
a more specific aspect, the invention has for its purpose to so construct the bed of a machinetool and to so arrange it in conjunction with the supporting floor that there will be a continuous circulation of the cooling medium and that any of the water or cooling medium that happens to strike the floor may be easily carried to a conductor forming part of the circulatory system.
A further purpose of the invention is to afford a table construction of such character that the cooling medium falling there on is quickly and readily conducted to the circulation channels at the sides of the bed, while efiectively preventing access of the coolin' medium to the central part of the bed w ere a art of the operating mechanism is housed.
To these and other ends the invention comprises the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear clearly from the following description when read in con unction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the description.

Referrin more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, the structure comprises a bed designated generally at 1, upright columns 2, and
a connecting cross-head 3. 4 is a cross-rail on which the tool heads 5 are mounted, carrying suitable milling tools 6 which are cooled during the cutting operation by a flow of water or other cooling medium from.

In a machine of this character, the tools are frequently at some distance above the top of the table and the floor, with the re is desirable to prevent the cooling liquid from collecting or standing upon the floor or from reaching the center of the bed Where parts of the operating mechanism is located, and these results are accomplished by the following construction.
Referring to Figures 1 and 4, the work table which travels on the bed 1 comprises a top portion 10 and a bottom 11 that is spaced from the top 10 and connected thereto by transverse vertical walls 12. The bottom has attached thereto on its under side a rack 13 engaged and operated by a pinion 14, by which means' the table is reciprocated, as usual in this class of machinery. The bottom 11 of the table is entirely closed so that there is no chance for cooling medium to get through to the central portion of the bed where thegear 14 is located. 15 designates openings in the top of the table through which the cooling water, when falling on to the top, can pass to the bottom 11, whence it is conducted laterally and over the outer ledges 16 of the bottom of the table. The top 10 which extends laterally beyond the bottom 11 is provided at its sides with longitudinally extend-ing passages 17 which conduct the cooling medium to either end of the table and thence to cross-passages 18, to an opening within which is arranged a screen 19 through which the liquid can pass to the bottom 11 and thence ofl over the sides of said bottom.
Along both sides of the bed are conducting channels 21 into which the cooling liquid falls after it leaves the bottom 11 of 'of the bridges 26 the table. The channels 21 extend lengthwise of the bed and communicate at one end with a reservoir 22, see Figure 2, from which pipes 23 lead to pumps 24, water being thereby forced to the discharge pipes 7 and discharged on to the cutting tools.
In order to prevent collecting of any of the cooling medium upon the floor around the machine,- the floor which is preferably of cement is constructed as shown in Fi ure 1. The machine is embedded and the oor surrounds the bed of the machine up to a point flush with the tops of channels 21, and from the upper edge of each channel, the floor inclines upwardly as designated at 25 for a substantial distance so as to deflect any water upon the floor to the channels 21, whence it is carried to the supply reservoir. It will be understood that additional water or cooling medium may be furnished to the reservoir or to the cooling system as needed in any convenient manner.
At the central part of the machine, between the upright columns 2, the bed ineludes upwardly inclined bridge portions between the main part of the bed and the flanges 27 which are bolted to the bottoms of the upright columns 2. The bridge portions 26 serve to collect any cooling medium that falls at these points, and carry it to gutters 28 extending longitudinally of the bed and inclining from its central portion downwardly in both directions. The gutters 28 are located immediately above the channels 21 and any water falling on to one flows inwardly to the gutter 28 and to one end or the other of the latter from which it falls into channel 21 and is conducted to the end of the bed and to the reservoir 22.
\Vith the mechanism described, any cooling medium falling on to the work table at its central portion passes through openings 15 on to the bottom 11 and thence laterally over the ledges 16 and into the channels 21. Any cooling medium striking the work table at its outer portions passes by way of the passages 17 to the ends of the table and hence through the screens 19 on to the bottom 11 and over the side edges thereof, while any cooling medium striking the bridges 26 or gutters 28 flows to the ends of the gutters 28 and thence drops into the channels 21. Any cooling medium striking the floor at any location around the machine flows by way of the inclined surfaces 25 downwardly toward the bed and into the channels 21.
While the invention has been described with reference to a particular structural embodiment, it is not confined to the details herein shown, and this application is intended to cover any modifications or changes coming within the purposes of the improvement or the scope of the following cla1ms.
I claim:
1. A machine tool comprising in combination a bed having liquid conductin channels along the sides thereof, uprig t columns, said bed including central bridge portions connecting with the columns, the bridge portions being inclined downwardly toward the bed and terminating in gutters extending longitudinally of the bed above the aforesaid channels and emptying into the same, and a work table including a perforate top and an imperforate bottom spaced therefrom, and transverse vertical walls connecting the top and bottom, said bottom serving to conduct any cooling medium falling from said top to the aforementioned channels along side the bed.
2. In a machine tool, the combination of a bed, liquid conducting channels along the sides of the bed, a work table movable on the bed and comprising an imperforate bottom, a perforated top extending laterally beyond the side edges of the bottom, and vertical walls supporting the top in spaced relation to the bottom, longitudinally extending gutters varranged above said liquid conducting channels and beneath the side edges of said bottom, and bridges inclined upwardly and outwardly from said gutters beneath the laterally extending portions of the top.
