- COVER FOR- THE DISCHARGE OPENINGS OF CONCRETE MIXING DRUMS Filed July 5, 1929 3nnentor JOS EPH- EGG ERT All; GttomcgS Patented Sept. 29, 1931, i
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH EGGERT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE JAEGER MACHINE COMPANY,
OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO Application filed July 5, 1929. Serial No. 376,108.
This invention relates to concrete mixers and more particularly to such as have a mixing drum mounted on a truck for transporting or for transporting and mixing the mate-- a rials in transit from a point of supply to a point of use. Such a drum should have a cover to prevent the escape of the materials during transit. 7
An object of the invention is to provide an is improved cover for the discharge opening of the mixing drum of such construction and mounting that it can be easily and quickly applied and removed. Another object of the invention is to utilize the cover in the vision of means for supplying water to the mixture. A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby thecover cannot be removed until a predetermined number of rotations of the drum has been had. Other objects will appear from'the disclosure herein.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
25 In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the discharge end of the mixing drum showing my invention applied thereto and as in closed position. I
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevationthe drum being broken off at one end. 7
Fig. 3 is a sectional and full line detail showing the water supplying connection with the cover.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the timing device.
In the views 5 designates the mixing drum which is supported on a suitable motor truck, the rear supporting wheels of which met fracftionally indicated at 6. The drum is mount- 49 "ed to turn horizontally on the truck and is driven by a take-ofi' from the power for drivi ing the truck, this being a modern well known practice, the details of which need not be illustrated herein as it does not constitute the 45 present. invention.
The circular discharge opening at theend of the drum is surrounded by a projecting locln'ng ring or flange 5 The cover for the opening is designated 7. The truck bed is 5 equipped with a stationary frame for suppro porting the cover, said frame comprising convergmg slanting risers 8, and a top cross piece 8, said frame being supported by a pair of fixed horizontal rods 9 extending through loops 10 on fixed circular guards 11 within which the drum rotates.
The cover is-movably supported insaid stationary frame by means of a vertical standard 12 journaled at its lower end in a bearing 13 supported by a bracket 14 fastened to the truck bed, the upper end of the standard being journaled in a bracket 15 on the stationary frame. Said standard has a horizontal extension 16 from which pivotally dependsa bent arm or link 17 to the lower end of which is fulcrumed a hand lever 18 having a sleeve 18 (see Fig. 3) at its end loosely encircling a tubular extension 7 a of the cover 7. The tubular extension 7 of the cover is threaded at its end to receive a nut 19 for retaining the sleeve 18 on said extension. It will be observed that by this means the cover is capable of a sort of universal movement, that is, it can be swung bodily toward and from the discharge opening of the mixing drum on the axis of the vertical standard 12, upward or downward by means of the pendent arm 17, and rotated on its axis in the sleeve 18.
For manipulating the cover in the manner described it is provided with a hand rail 20. For latching the cover the rim 5 of the discharge opening of the mixing drum the cover is provided with lugs 21 affixed thereto and a movable lug 22 on a swinging handle 22 said swinging handle being journaled in a bearing 23 on the rim of the cover. To apply the cover to the opening the fixed lugs 21 are first hooked over the projecting locking ring 5 at the top and then the movable lug 22 turned onto the said projecting ring at the bottom as best seen in Fig. 2. When the cover is thus tightly secured to the ring it rotates with the mixing drum, and the cover may be disengaged from the drum in any of the positions to which it may be left upon cessation of the rotary motion of the drum by merely loosening the lug 22 and drawing the cover away by means of the hand rail.
To prevent discharge of the drum before a 106 predetermined number of revolutions thereof the standard 12 and its horizontal extension is locked in the position it occupies when the cover is closed by means of a rod 25 pivoted to a horizontal crank arm 26 on the standard 12, said rod 25 extending into a closed case 27 fixed on the truck bed, said closed case containing a dog 31 for engaging a notch in said rod, said dog adapted to be released only upon a given predetermined number of revolutions of the mixing drum. The said timing mechanism, as shown, includes a lever 28 operated by lug 28 on the drum, said lever 28 carrying a pawl'29 for operating a spring retracted ratchet wheel 30 that upon the given number of movements operates the dog 81 latching the rod 25 to release the latter and permit movement of the cover. Such timing mechanisms are in common use, and well understood, and apart from the combination herein do not constitute the present invention.
Water can be supplied to the materials of the drum through a flexible hose 32 having a metallic nozzle 33 passed through the tubular extension of the cover, said nozzle being secured by a collar 34c with a set screw at the inner side of the cover.
The form of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a concerte mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for said opening-and means for supporting said cover including a horizontally swinging arm and a pivoted link on said arm carrying the cover adapted to permit the swinging of the cover toward and from said opening and means permitting movement of the cover in its plane on said pivoted link.
2. In combination with a concrete mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for said opening and means for supporting said cover including a horizontally swinging arm carrying the cover adapted to permit the swinging of the cover toward and from said'opening and means permitting movement of said cover with respect to said swinging arm.
3. In combination with a concrete mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for said opening, means for connecting said cover with said mixer, said cover having an opening through which water may be supplied.
4. In combination with a concrete mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for said opening, means connecting said cover with said mixer permitting universal movement thereof, said cover having a central water supply means around which said cover may be turned.
5. In combination with a concrete mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for opening and closing said opening, means for supporting said cover including a frame, a stand ard journaled uprightly in said frame, said standard having a laterally extending arm, a link pendently pivoted to said laterally extending arm and means connecting said cover with said link.
6. In combination with a concrete mixer having a discharge opening, a cover for opening and closing said opening, means for sup porting said cover including a frame, a standard journaled upri htly in said frame, said standard having a aterally extending arm, a link pendently pivoted to said laterally extending arm and means connecting said cover with said link permitting rotation of the cover thereon.
