Description

L. B. KOCH PAPER BOTTLE Sept. 29, 1931.
Filed Feb. 25, 1928 INVENTOR Zyc'izafi Koch,
a ATTORNEY I Patented Sept. 29 1931 UNITEDI'STATES PATEN'FJOFFICE LYDIA B. KOCH, or NEW YORK, is. Y., nssreivoa T anmroecn'nrnrnn BOTTLE con-- romrron, or cnrcaeo, rumors, A. CORPORATION or DELAWARE Perms Berra-E 7 Application filed February 23, 1928. Serial no. 256,188.
Among the principal objects which the.
present invention has in view are: to provlde a hght and strong receptacle of the character mentioned; to provide a nonfr'acturable i the neck of said receptacle; and to provide" a reinforced and solid seat for said receptacle. m Figure 1 is a vertical section of a milk bottle, constructed and arranged in accordance with the present, invention.
Flgure 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom view of the cover of said bottle.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the neck portion.
As seen in the drawings, the receptacle has preferably a cylindrical body portion 8, and a frusto-conical neck portion .9. These are each constructed of sheet paper and of two and more plies thereof. In most cases the two-ply indicated'in the drawings and in Figures 1 and 3 thereof, is found sufiicient for strength and as offering ample resistance 'to elements tending to distort or destroy the shape of the receptacle or bottle.
The plies indicated in the drawings are constructed from the same piece of material and are wrapped or rolled upon a mandrel, or p mandrels. The wra ping or rolling referred to is performed simu taneously for the straight strip from which the body portion 8, is constructed, and from the curved strip of which the neck portion 9, is constructed. These two strips simultaneously produce a reinforced median construction consequent upon the overlapping of the edges of the two strips, as shown in Flgure 1 of the drawings. The result of this is that the upper edge of the bodyportion 8, and the lower edge of the neck portion9, are reinforced, or made extra pressure resistant.
When rolling the an additional strip rolled upon the material at thepouring en of the neck, an added thickness is thereby frusto-conical portion 9, 10 .of narrow material is 60 imparted to this portion of the structure,-so
of approved type.
that the end of the material forming the neck may be rolled'over upon the added stri 10, and the whole subsequently pressed to form the rounded extended lip 11 and the upwardly opening'substantially flat seat 12. I When completing the bottle, suitable dies and presses are employed, which forms out of the thickened material the rounded li 11 .of the bottle and the annular seat .12 su sequentlyemployed to receive a. bottle cover It will be seen that the heck portion 9 is reinforced at the smaller end by the lip 11, and at the larger end by the four-ply section 13. Also it will be seen that the fourply section 13 reinforcesthe upper end or edge of the body portion 8, while the lower edge is reinforced and strengthened by an inserted bottom 14 and the over-curled edge 14 thereof, which forms a strong and solid 7 seating edge.
It will be observed by referring to Figure 1 of the drawings that the material forming the edge 14' is completely curled upon itself so thatthe edges of the body por- 7 tion 8, and of the flange of the bottom 14 are completely interlockedwith the result that the bottom 14 cannot -be accidentally forced into the bottle, the overturned edge of the bod portion serving to prevent this.
The portions 8 and 9 are preferably comressed to harden the same and to insure the mechanical adhesion of the plies forming the structure. 'In pressing the frusto-conical neck 9 and lip 11, the dies employed are so, 35 arranged as to produce the upset ridges 15 which, after beingformed assist in reinforcing or preserving the structural uniFy of the neck of the bottle. "It is between two of the ridges ,15 that the transparent window 16 is placed. The window 16 is provided to enable the user of the bottle to see the creamline of the milk contained therein. a The sections of the ridges 15 which are formed on the lip 11 reinforce the same and 95,
operate as lugs to assist in locking a cap which may be forced down over the hp, with d the effect that the said cap is securely held.
The recesses 17 formed in the-under edge of the pendent flange '11 of the cover 18,
serve to pass over the ridges 15 on the lip 11 without extension of the lip 11 so that after the cover 18 is in position by rotating the cover so that the recesses 17 pass out of ali nment with the ridges 15, the cover is loc ed in service position.
Claims: 1. A paper bottle having a tapered laminated neck portion, a reinforced thickened pouring edge secured thereto, and an added reinforcing filler strip interposed between said neck portion and pouring edge, said thickened portion being molded to form a horizontal upward opening seat, substantial- 1y as described. 2. A paper bottle having a ta ered laminated neck portion, a reinforce thickened pouring edge secured thereto, an added reinforcing filler strip interposed between said neck portion and pouring edge, said filler strip and associated parts being compressed to a definite form providing aninterlor seat for a bottle cover, said "seat being approximately horizontal and disposed to have free access thereto from above.
