n Fig. 4`is a central, longitudinally extending, vertical .sectionalyiew taken substan- 'tially on line LL-l of Figs. 1 and 3.
In thisillustrative construction there is shown a mining machineof the flexibly fed, continuous cutter, room and pillar type comprising a low compact. liframe 1 of4 generally rectangular shape havinga smooth bottom surface 2 adapted to rest upon and slide in any ydirection over the mine Hoor. The frame 1 comprises a centralrmotor section. 3 supportedona bedk section Lland interposed between the .cutter and vfeed frame sections 3y TES PATE-NT OFFICE and 6, these frame sections when united forme ing a rigid low compact frameon which the various mechanisms .of the machine are supported. As shown, the cutter frame section 5 is disposed at the forward end of the machine frame and projecting forwardly from the cutter frame and rigidly secured thereto trolling members 9 and 10 and cooperating with said members are flexible feeding elements 11 and 12 respectively, the feed operating and controlling members and their cooperating feeding elements being herein in the, form of winding drumscooperating with feed cables or. ropes.k Housed within the motor frame section3 is a horizontal motor 13 having its power shaft 14 horizontallydisposed and extending longitudinally of the machine frame and driving from its opposites "ends respectively vthe lcutting and feeding mechanisms, the` motor being of the type adapted toeffect drive of thefeeding and cutting mechanisms selectively in opposite directions and which herein may be of the reversible electric type The'cutting mechanism andthe driving mechanism therefor are of the same general design as those described in a copending application, Serial No. 312,732, filed October 15, 1928. The cutterdriving mechanism generally comprises a bevel pinion 15v suitably rigidly fixed to the forward end ofthe motor shaft 14 and meshing with a bevel gear 16.
' Ihis -bevel gearV drives a spur pinion 17 meshing with a larger spur. gear 18 connectiblein a manner clearly described in the copending application mentioned above, in driving relation with the cutter chain SQ As the specific construction of thev cutting mechanism does not specifically enter into this invention, further description ofthe Ysame'is thought Vto be Now referring to theimproved flexible feeding'means, it will be noted that mechanism is provided operative to effect rotation of the winding drums 9 and 10 selectively in winding vor unwinding direction either separately or 'simultaneously at a relatively slow cutting speed or at a relatively high machine movingspeed without reversing the machine driving motor, and includes means operative to permit the winding drums to revolvein unwinding direction under various degrees ofl frictional resistance or to revolve freelyV in unwinding direction. To attain these functions a separate and distinct plural speed reversible driving -connection is employed for each drum and includes a fast speed gear herein preferably formed integral with a horizontal longitudinally extending shaft 22 having its axis arranged parallel with and in Y a plane below the motor shaft. This shaft 22' is journaled in ball bearings 23 suitably supported within the feed frame section and has also formed integral therewith a spur pinion 24 meshing-with the spur gear 25 secured as by a key 26 to a horizontal shaft 27 having its axis arranged parallel with and in a plane below the shafts 14 and 22. As shown in Fig. 4, this shaft 27 is journaled in ball bearings 28v suitably supported within the feed frame section and has secured thereto as by a ley-29 .at its rear end a bevel pinion 30. This bevel pinion meshes with a bevel gear 31 secured asrrby a key 32 to a vertical shaft 33. This shaft 33 is journaled at itsupper and lower endsand intermediate its ends inball bearings 34 suitably supported by the feed frame section. Secured to the shaft 33 is a worm 35 and secured as by a key 36 to the upper end of this shaft is a spur gear `37 meshing vwith a larger spur gear 38 secured as by a key 39 to avertical shaft 40 arranged parallel with and in the rear ofthe shaft 33.
Y This shaft40 is journaled'at its upper and in opposite directions, the worm 35 being a Afast speed worm while the worm 42 is a slow speed worm.
In this instance, meshing with the worm 35 at opposite sides thereof are fast speed worm wheels 43 and'44 connectible by friction disc clutches 45 and 46 to horizontal longitudinally extending shafts 47 and 48 respectively. These shafts are arranged in parallel relation'and their axesa-re disposed in vertical planes spaced eeuidistantlv at each side of the longitudinal center of the machine. These worin wheels 43 and 44 are vdriven in the same direction and are supported on their respective shafts on ball bearings 49 and 50. respectivelysupported by the shafts. while these shafts lare each iournaled in ball bearings 51 and 52 suitably supported within the feed frame section. Meshing with the opposite sides of the slow speed worm 42 and driven bythe latter in the same direction areslow speed worm Wheels 53 and 54 connectible by friction disc clutches 55 and 56 to the shafts 47 and 48 respectively. As the friction vclu'tcheswithin the worm wheels 43,44,
53 and'54 are substantially identical in derotatably mounted within the rear end wallV of the machine frame. This nut is formed iiitegral with an operating' handle 65. i Similar operating mechanism is employed for the friction clutches 46 and '56 and includes yan operating handle 67.V i i i Secured to the forward ends of the shafts 47 and 48 respectivelysare bevel vpinion-s 68 and 69. As illustrated, the bevel pinion 68 meshes with the reverse bevels and 71 jouriialed on ball bearings 72 supported on a hori- `Zonctal shaft 73. 4This shaft 7 3 extends transversely of the machine and is'journaled in ball bearings 74 suitably suported within the feed frame section. Thereverse bevels 70 Vand 71'are selectively -connectible by friction disc clutches 75 and 76 respectively to the shaft 731:0 effect rotation :of the latter -selective-ly in opposite directions. Suitably secured as by a -key 77 to theouter endlof the shaft '7 3 is a spur-pinion 78 meshing with an internal gear 79 herein formed integral with y the feed drum 9.
Again referring to the drivingcennections for the controlli-ng drum 10, it will be observed that the bevel pinion .691meshes with 'reverse' bevels 8O` and 81 journaled on ball bearings 82 supported'by a-horiZon-tal shaft 83. T his shaft 83 is aline'd with the shaft 78 and is jonrnaled in ball bearings 84 suitably supported within the feed frame section. The reverse bevels `and 81 are selectively connectible to the shaft 82 by frictiony disc clutches 85and 86 respectively to effect rotation of the shaft 83 selectively in opposite directions. Sec-uned as by akey 87 to the outer end of the shaft 88 is'a spur pinion 88 meshingl with an internalY gear 89 herein formed integral with the drum 10. As shown in Fig. 3., the drums .9 and 10 are each journaled on the side of the machine frame on va laterally projecting stub shaft- .90 formed integra-l with a plate member 91 secured as byl screws 92 to'the side of the machine frame. Supported on this ,stub shaft 90 are ball bearings 93 on which the winding Idrum is `rotatably supported. The winding drum and supporting bearings therefor are held against axial displacement from the stub shaft by means 'of a screw and washer connection 94 and the complete bearing -structurerfor the drum is arranged within a boi'e95 formed within the drum. The operating' mechanism for the `clutches 75 and 76 -within the reverse bevels 70 and 7l comprises a shipper yoke 96 suitably mountedV at 97 within the feed frame section This shipper yoke is pivotally connected at 98 yto a longitudinally extending operating rod 99 having a suitable operating handle 100 conveniently located yat the rear end of the machine adjacent the control handle 66 for the speed controlling clutches foi the drum 9. Similar operating' mechanism is mployed for controlling. the clutches 85 and '86 within the reverse bevels 80 and 81 and includes a pivoted shipper yoke 101, an operatiiigY rod 102 and a controlling handle 103 located adjacent the other clutch control handle 67. It will thus he -seeii that when the proper friction clutches within the Worm wheels are applied and upon suitable application of the proper friction clutches within the reverse bevels, the feed and controlling drums 9V and 10 may be rotated selectively in opposite directions at either a relatively high speed or at a relatively low speed.
Means are provided for guiding the cables 11 and 12 during` the various operations of the machine and herein comprise guide sheaves 105, 106 disposed on opposite sides of the forward end ofthe machine frame, each of these guide sheaves being supported by a pivote'd swing arm 107 in turn carried by a bracket v108 secured asby a screw 109 to a side of the cutter frame section 5.y Arranged atthe opposite sides of the rear end of the machineframe are `guide sheaves-110 and 111 eachmounted on asupport 112 secured as by screws 118 to the side of the feed frame section '6. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the machine iscutting from right to left, the cable 11 extends from the top of the feed drum 9 rforwardly along the side of the machine and around the front guide sheave laterally from the front end'of the machine.
The controlling cable 12 entends from the bottoni of the controlling drum rearwardly along the side of the machine, around the guide sheave 111 laterally from the rear end of the machine. When the machine is cutting from Vleft to right, the cable 11 is passed laround the rear guide sheave while the cable 12 is extended along the side of the machine and around the front guide sheave The operation of the machine will now be described. The machine is propelled about the mine While mountedon itstransport truck and when'the work-ing place is reached, the machine is'unloaded from the truck onto the mine floor in a well known manner. The cable 12 is then extended from the drumv 10 forwardly along the side of the machine around the front guide sheave 106 and forwardly from the machine to a suitable anchor -or-roof jack located adjacent the coal face at the right hand rib. The operator then manipulates the control handle 67, swinging the shipper yoke 60 into a position to apply the friction clutch- 46 within the fast speed Y machine is fed bodily over the mine floor to a position adjacent the coal face at the right hand side of the room, the friction clutch 46 thereafter being released. If it is desired, the machine may be movedover the mine bottom at a fast speed by means of the feed drum 9 and cooperating feed cable l1, or under some conditions both the cables l1 and l2 may be used to feed the machine. After the machine is suitably positioned adjacent the coal face, the cable 12 is Idisconnected from the front guide sheave 106 while still retaining its connection with the jack and the cable l1 is extended from the feed drum 9 forwardly along the side of the machine around the front guide sheave 105 and laterally from the front end of the machine transversely across the coal face to a suitable anchor or rib jack located adjacent the face at 'Y the lefthand rib. rlhe cutter chain 8 is then connected to the motor and the friction clutch 56 within the slow speed worm wheel 54 is then applied and the clutch 86 1s loaded and the drum 10 is rotated' at a relatively slow cutting speed in a direction to wind in the cable l2, thereby moving. the machine forwardly toward the face to effect the sumpingA cut, the clutch 56 thereafter being released. As the cutter bar is sumped into the coal, the feed drum 9 is rotated in a direction to maintain the feed cable ll under tension, thereby guiding the machine as the cutter bar is sumped beneath the coal face. If desired.
' the feed drum 9 and feed cable 10 maybe used to sump the cutter bar beneath the coal or under some conditions both the cables 11 and 12 may be extended to anchors adjacent the coal face and wound in to effect sumping` of the cutter bar.` After the cutter bar has been sumped vbeneath the coal face the operator applies the clutch 55 within the slow speed worm wheel 53 and upon application of the clutch Z 5 within the bevel gear 70 the feed drum 9 may be rotated in a direction tov wind in the feed cable 11 and the machine is straightened up and fed transversely across the coal face at a cutting speed. At the same time the clutch 56 within the worm wheel 54 is applied and the controlling drum 10 is rotated in a direction to wind in the controlling cable 12, but due to the opposing forces caused by the pull of the feed cable 1l on the forward end'of the machine and the reaction of the cutters against the coal, the controlling` cable 1Q is nulledv olf from the drum 10 under the frictional resistance of the friction clutch 56. lf it is desired f during the transverse cutting operation to angle the cutter bar` the operator may release the controlling drum 10 from its drive,
Ythereby permitting the drum to rotatefreely Vcontrolling cable 12,y thereby swinging the rear end of the machine rearwardly and angling the cutter bar. The cutter bar may be swung forwardly also by the application of the fast speed friction clutch 45 t0 cause the feed drum 9 to wind in the feed cable 1l at a relatively high speed. It will be evident that by the provision of the reversebevels 80 an-d 81 the controlling drum 10 may be ro tated in a direction to unwind the controlling cable 12 while the feed drum 9`is rotated in direction to windv in the feed cable 11 during` the transverse cutting operation, the drum 10 paying out the cable 12 at the same rate as the drum 9 windsin the feed cable 11. At the end 'of the transverse cut, the machine is angled relative to the coal face and the feed cable 11 is disconnected from its jack and the front guide sheave 105 and extended from the feed drum 9 to an anchor or roof iack located at the rear of the machine. The drum 9 is then rotated in a direction to wind in the cable 11 at a relatively slow speed and the cutter bar is withdrawn from the coal. The machine is then hauled over the mine bottom at a relatively high speed by one or the other. or both. of the cables 11 and 12 and loaded onto a transport truck. Other operations of the improved miningr machine will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
As a result of this invention it will be noted that an improved mininff machine is .provided having improved feeding mechanism whereby the machine may be fed and guided in an improved manner; It will further be Vnoted that an improved mining machine feeding mechanism is provided of the multidrum tvpe having improved driving and controlling means for the drums whereby the latter may be rotated lselectively in opposite directions without reversing the machine driving motor, either separately or simultaneously.A at relatively high speed or at relatively slow speed, may rotate in unwinding direction under various degrees of operatorcontrolled frictional resistance, or may rotate freely in unwinding direction. It will further be noted that the improved feeding mechanism is of a symmetrical and well balanced design` the driving connections between the motor and each of the drums being identical in construction. thereby enabling a substantialV number of the parts to be duplicated with a resultant decrease in the cost of manufacture.

While there is in this application specilically described lone yembodiment which the invention may'assume inpractic'e, will be understood that thisv form of the' same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other formsl withoutdeparting fromtlie spirit oi the scope oi'theappendd claims'. l
