"IMPROVEMENT IN nAlLwAv-sleNALs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,396; datedSeptember 19, 1876;.app1ication filed I August 21, 1876.
proved Railway-Signal, of which the f0llow` ing is a specification:
`Figure l is a plan. Fig. 2 is a side eleva- Similar letters ofl reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to signals used on railways to indicate an approaching train; and it consists ot' an arrangement ot' levers and connecting-rods, which are combined with a danger signal or flag in such a in anner that the same is displayed by the action otl a passing train upon the levers and rods, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A is a lever, consisting ot two equal arms, a c, and is pivoted, at b, between suitable standards, B. C is a rocking shaft, that has its bearings in the standards B, and is provided with a short arm, c, that is connected to the lever A,Iat d, by the connecting-rod c.
A longer arm, D, is attached to the rocken shaft C, the normal position ot' which is vertical. To this arm a flag or lother usual indicator of danger -isattached E is a `vertical rocking shaft, lsupported `by the frame F, which is located some distancefrono the crossing. G is a lever, consisting of the armsff,
that projects an equal distance from `the shaft Ef H is a sector-shaped arm attached to the I upper end of the shaft E and provided with the lugs g h that project from its curvedledge. This sectoral 'arm isplaced in such a relation to the track that a passing engine, carrying a spring' or finger, engages one of the lugs and turns the arm. The lever G is connected b'y the rods 't' t' to the lever A. Atl a device is placed which is in all respects similar to that just described, except that it is connected with the lever Aso as to act in the opposite direction.
The operationis obvious. The engine ot' the passing4 train, carrying a spring that en-` gages the lug g on the lever H, turns the .I
as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-` l. The arrangement 'of the lever A, connecting-rod e, and signal-arm D, substa11-- tially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the sectoral arm H, shaft E, lever Gr, rods I, lever A, connectingrod e, and signal-arm D, substantially as i shown and described.
