This invention relates to an improvement in window fasteners and an object of the invention is to provide a fastener when in engaged position will retain the window in 5 a secure position and will prevent upward and downward movement.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a fastener of the character described that 10 is free of certain parts likely to be damaged by wear, very simple in its method of assembly, thoroughly reliable in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and install.
: lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanyan ing drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it' is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims here- 25 unto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation 0 of a window sash and frame, illustrating an adaptation therewith of a device in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates'a window frame, 6 indicates awindow sash vertically slidable with respect to 45 and abutting against the frame. The window sash 6 is provided with a glass 7 which is secured thereto in the conventional manner. The width of the inner face of the frame 6 is materially greater than the thickness of the sash so as to provide an inner face 8 extending at right angles to either side of the sash 6, so as to provide a facefor I the fastener in accordance with this invention to abut against. The fastener in accordance with this invention consists of a pair of. substantially elongatedplates indicated generally at 9, 10,
having curved outer ends 11, 12, flaring outwardly from the'plates in opposite directions and constituting cams. The curved outer ends or cams, 11, 12, are adapted to abut against the inner face 8 of the frame 5 when in operative position.
Inwardly from the centers of the plates are formed extensions or flanges 13,- '14:, on the adjacent inner facesv thereof which are adapted to overlap and abut against each other. Openings 15, 16, extend through the extensions or flanges and register with each other so as to receive a pin 17 which forms a rockable connection between thevplates. The inner finger gripping'ends of the plates 9, 10, as indicated at 18, 19, are adapted'to be spaced apart when the positionas shown in Figure 2, while in the position shown in Figure 1, the said ends I are adapted to abut against each other, There is provided a tightfriction fit between the pin and the walls of the openings 15, 16, so that the plates may be moved with re spect to each other but not very freely.
The lower plate 9 is provided with an opening 20 which extends entirelv through the same and is located outwardly of the, centervof the plates and eccentric to the reg-- istering openings 15 and .16 of the rockable pin connection 17 between the plates.
A: screw 21 or any other conventional pivot extends through the opening 20 and is anchored inthe side of the window sash ,6.
By having the pivot 21 located outwardly from the center of the rockable plate and eccentric with respect to the rockable connection 17 it will be noted as disclosed in Figure l the weight of the dog 14 being entirely to the right of the pivot point 21, would hold the dog 9 in contact with the window frame 5 at point 11 in such manner as to prevent the lowering of the sash 6. It is to be noted that only the lower plate 9 is pivoted to the sash 6 and the distance from the pivot connection to the outermost edge of the lower plate is more than the distance from the point of contact with the screw for the purpose specified.

In the application of the window fastener to the window sash and frame,the lower plate 9 is attached to the inner face of the;
Window sash 6 at such distance from the inner face 8 of the window frame 5, so that when the plate 9 rotates about the pivot 21, the curved edge 11 will be brought into abutment with the inner face 8. Under normal conditions, the fastener will be disposed as shown in Figure l of'the drawings, by reason of the fact that the weights of both members are disposed inwardly from the pivot 21 and furthermore by reason of the fact that the plates 9, 10 are not freely rock-v able upon the pin 17.
In operation the device as shown in Figure 1 discloses the lower dog 9 in its normal contacting position against the frame 5 and preventing the lowering of the sash 6. In Figure 2 it will be observed that both dogs are in abutted and engaged position with the frame 5 and in this position the window will be held against upward or downward movement. 1
While the lower dog 9 has a normal contacting position with that of the same sized window it may be moved downwardly by pressing upwardly on the gripping finger 18 of the lower dog 9, thus rocking the dog 7 9 sufliciently to disengage the abutting cam face 11 so that the window sash may be lowered.
What is claimed is:
.In a window fastener of the character referred comprising a plate including a body having a retaining cam at one end adapted to frictionally engage the adjacent window frame surface and having a lateral extension adjacent the other end constituting a flange, said body being apertured at a point between itsends for reception of a pivotal attaching screw, and another plate including a body having a retaining cam at one end for frictionally engaging the adjacent window.
