My invention relates to sprinkling cans having a spout for delivering a solid stream of water and a perforated sprinkler head detachably secured thereto for delivering a z. spray of water interchangeably with the solid stream of water when desired.
The object of my invention is to provide the spout with simple and economical means for delivering a solid stream of water downse wardly from the spout, when the detachable sprinkler head is removed so that the can can be conveniently used for pouring a solid slow moving stream of water into an automobile radiator as well as into a flower pot, flower bed or other place.
To this end, my invention consists primarily of a hollow dome, preferably of pressed metal secured to the end of the spout substantially as hereinafter described and having a downwardly and forwardly inclined opening through which a solid stream of water can be delivered, when the sprinkler head is removed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry this invention into practice.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application for patent, in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sprinkling can embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation partly in section of the spout of the same, showing my improvement.
In the specific embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, 3 designates the body of the sprinkling can, 4 the spout thereof, and 5 the perforated sprinkler head.
To avoid the need of the ordinary downwardly or outwardly curved nozzle, which has been used from time immemorial on the end of the spout for discharging a solid stream downwardly when the sprinkler head is detached, I fixon the end of the spout a hollow dome 6, having a discharge opening 7 at the downward and forward part there- 5 of, through which opening 7 the solid stream 1929. of water will be delivered downwardly and forwardly when the can is tilted.
To provide for detachably fastening the sprinkler head 5 to the spout, I prefer to press and solder the dome 6 as shown on the outer end of an externally threaded sleeve 8, the inner end of which has an interior collar 9 which is by preference pressed and soldered on the end of the spout, and the collar 10 of the sprinkler head is internally threaded to screw on the externally threaded sleeve 8.
This construction makes an exceedingly simple and effective solid slow moving stream downward delivering device, which cannot, owing to the dome construction, be easily broken or injured or choked by debris in the Water.
It is evident that the specific construction herein shown and described may be varied without departing from the boundaries of my invention as defined by the following claim.
By the peculiar construction of the dome at the end of the spout, with the restricted downward opening, is secured a quiet downwardly flowing stream that may be poured into the radiator of a car from a full can without spilling the water all over the outside of the radiator and the body of the car and the person holding the can.
This peculiar result is secured because the water coming through the spout of a tilted can will strike the end of the dome which is its natural path of travel, and will then be thrown back on itself and then be forced down out of the restricted opening in the dome in a quiet stream, the force of the water being directed against itself to prevent the full pressure from the spout from being forced on the discharge aperture.
I claim as my invention:
A watering can for filling automobile radiators including a spout having a domeshaped cap having a substantially spherical end wall, said cap being closed at the end and having a lateral aperture in said spherical wall below the axis of said cap, said aperture being of less diameter than the diameter of said cap so that the wall of said cap which 1 defines the edge of said aperture is inclined abruptly circumferentially to the surface of the stream flowing through said aperture, whereby water flowing along said well to Ward said aperture pushes against the column flowing axially through said aperture,
reducing its cont'aetive pressure against the edge of sand aperture.
